1. Induction and Luncheon recap

Induction
• The induction this semester went a lot smoother than last semester’s.
• Megan suggested that a better time management next time will be
much appreciated.
• Some new members pointed that it was a little difficult to figure out
exactly what was expected of them and what they were supposed to do
.
Luncheon
• Diana admits to be very satisfied with the speaker of this semester
Honor Topic at the new member luncheon.
• The Honor Topic is : The Demoralization of Information: Power, Peril ,
and Promise.
• The speaker was willing to engage the audience in his presentation,
which made the session even more interesting.
• As always, attendees enjoyed the food and refreshments served at the
event.
• Overall, the luncheon was a success and many thanks to those who
contributed to the event.

2. Blood drive
• Iota Xi has earned a $750 scholarship for being able to do the
blood drives
• We have been very successful in having people sign up to
donate blood
• The whole idea behind having two blood drives this semester is
to compare and contrast two different blood centers.
• The last blood drive we had last week was for the New Jersey
Blood Service
• On April 20th we will be working with the other service center:
The New Jersey Blood Council .
• The chapter is trying to get an objective opinion regarding
services such as bed side manner, waiting period and more.
3. Beta Alpha Phi
Beta Alpha Phi is the Phi Theta Kappa chapter of Hudson County
College
Iota Xi is encouraged participate in other chapters’activities.
Salt-march cleanup
• Beta alpha Phi is holding a Salt-marsh cleanup on April 15th.
• Members of Iota Xi are encouraged to take part in this event in
support of our fellow chapter.
Adopt a beach
• Beta Alpha Phi is also having an Adopt –a-beach event on
Saturday, April 10th
• The event will be from 11 AM to 2 PM
• More information will be provided in the near future for anyone
who would like to help out and take part in the cleanup.
• The event location is: 1607 Ocean Avenue, Belmar
• The clean- up will be lots of fun
4. Scholarly Research
• Phi Theta Kappa is a scholarly honor society and we’re based in
doing research and figuring things out.
• Our new honor topic is” The Demoralization of Information:
Power, Peril, and Promise “
• Our goal is to try and figure out how that honor topic is related to
us and what we do.
• Diana and Sheila are teaming up to do research to figure out the
reasons behind one of our valued members whose membership is
now revoked due to dates conflicts related to the membership
requirement in the organization.
• Sheila is highly curious finding out the basis of Phi Theta Kappa’s
reasoning
• She highlighted that the tremendous ex-offenders punishment
here at UCC is unreasonable.
• Sheila is working towards finding out how the community at large
feels about this issue.
• A survey designed for the students at Union County College is
being prepared at the moment.
• Chris is convinced that we, the members, can define ourselves by
asking self-reflecting questions and can together work towards a
change.
• Diana pointed out that it’s very easy to judge according to a
certain standard, but if person has truly changed, they should be
given a chance to do better for themselves.
• Diana feels strongly that that there should definitely be an
exception to the rule.
• Sheila disagree with Diana and underlines that an exception to
the rule is not the route we want to take .
• Whatever change we make has to be beneficial to not just this
one person but to all members as well.
5. Art Exhibit
• The Art Exhibit started a little bit on the rough side
• Will take place on the new Elizabeth building on Friday, March 26,
2010 from 7PM to 9 PM .
• The event will be a great opportunity to show who Phi Theta
Kappa is.
• We will have some UCC performers
• 7 people have submitted their artwork so far.
• We might have to contact the same people for multiple artworks
if we don’t get more people to submit their works.
• If you’re interested or know anyone interested, you should submit
your work as soon as possible.
6. Panel Discussion
• The Panel discussion this semester will be on the new Honor
Topic
• The purpose of the event is to get more information of this topic,
having other professors talk about it, and exploring it in a more
open way.
• There are people on campus that we have as resources
• Those people may be interested on our new Honor Topic
• Iota Xi Chapter held its first Panel Discussion last semester
• The discussion wasn’t perfect but we learned from it and we plan
to do it better this semester.
• Members are recommended to attend this event.

Next Meeting:

Thursday, March 25, 2010 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm in

the alumni conference room in the Nomahegan building.
