Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor

Churchwide

Stranded But Not Abandoned

God and His creation have a way of upending mans

plans. Those of us from First Baptist Church who went to
Washington D.C. last week for the Evangelicals for Life
Conference and the March for Life were suddenly caught
in a record blizzard in Washington, seeing hurricane force
winds and over two feet of snow. We were unable to get
flights back, thus missing the wonderful FBC Worship
Weekend. We thank God that the Hyatt Hotel on Capitol Hill
was a good place to be stranded during Jonas. Thousands
of airline flights were cancelled, including ours.
However, the Lord opened doors before the storm for Cindy Case and I to speak
forthrightly to the policy staffs of Senators Rubio and Nelson and Representative
Diaz-Balart in private appointments. It is daunting to walk through the corridors
of power, as Chuck Colson described them, and boldly testify about Christ,
how He changes cultures and transforms persons. The reborn speak out for
the unborn. Obviously, some agreed with our positions, while others were
affable but unpersuaded (2 Timothy 2:24-26). I sought to clarify our conviction
concerning Gods created life in the womb, which calls us to value all ages and
stages of human life and to resist evil by defunding Planned Parenthood.
I was so proud of Cindy. She told her story of grace and described the
Surrendering the Secret ministry for women who once chose abortion yet
now seek healing. Mrs. Jennifer Brunns coordinated our meetings, while Janet
and Shannon Moore represented us at the Conference. I assured the influential
political operatives that thousands in southwest Florida and beyond believe the
way we do and desire that we fear the Lord, that the children may have refuge
(Proverbs 14:26).
I am so grateful for our excellent pastoral staff and know that Kevin Taylor, our
Pastor of Student Ministry, as a good servant of Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 4:6),
preached in my absence. I try to be in the pulpit as much as possible. We look
forward to the scheduled guest, Chip Ingram, who is one of Americas most
effective communicators who will speak on February 6 & 7.
You will not want to miss the return of Brigitte Gabriel, February 11 at 7:00 pm.
As ISIS sympathizers rise in America committing terror attacks against innocent
Americans, people are asking What is going on? How organized is ISIS in the
U.S.? How are they recruiting? What are the warning signs of an impending
jihadist attack? What do they really believe? These questions will hopefully be
covered in her briefing about national security.
If you feel stranded or stuck, unable to get a flight out of your situation, trust
the Lord Who establishes your steps (and stops) (Psalm 37:23). Fret-free
living is to follow Psalm 37:1-9. After all, life for the believer involves waiting
for the eternally scheduled flight out of earth in the Rapture (1 Thessalonians
4:16-17).
*There is a guest reception in the Commons following the Saturday night and
Sunday morning 11:00am worship services. Pastor would love to meet you!
