Wehavebeentalkingtoourstudentsaboutspecialneeds,disabilities,anddifferences
weallhavewhileraisingmoneyforthePolarPlunge.Ourgoalistohelpourkidsunderstandthateachofus
havesomethingweneedtoovercometobesuccessful.Wehadthemparticipateineventsthathadobstacles
inthewaytohinderthegoal.Wewantourstudentstoacknowledgethatothersmayfacestrugglestheyhave
notconsidered.Nomatterthedisability,weneedtobecompassionateandencourageeachothertobeour
personalbest!

PolarPlunge:
AspartoftheGreatKindnessChallengewewouldliketoshowsupporttoourSpencerCounty
SpecialOlympicschapterbyholdingachallengeonThursdayafternoon.Studentscanpurchasetickets
staringMonday,January25for$.50apiece.Studentscanchoosetoputtheirnameinforachanceinafree
throwchallenge,drawingchallenge,workscramblechallengeandhulahoopchallenge.Student'swhose
namesaredrawnwillparticipateinthesefunchallenges.Tohelpourstudentsdevelopabetterunderstanding
ofwhatitmightbeliketohaveadisabilitywewillbeaddingatwist!

Speechcontest:
Our5thand6thgradeclassroomsheardallstudentsgiveaspeechandnominatedamale
andfemaletoparticipateinourschoolwidecompetition.OurcandidatesincludedEmmaDay,RylanBegle,Ali
Hoffman,CalebHochgesang,GarrettKeller,MichaelaGogel,KortSchaefer,andCaitlynnSchipp.Weareso
proudofeachofthesestudentsforcompetingandpleasedtoannounceourwinnersGarrettKellerandEmma
Day.TheywillmoveontotheOptimistOratoricalContestonFebruary15at6:00p.m.intheSt.Nicholas
Churchbasement.

When: Saturday, February 6 at 10:00 am -1:30 pm. Contestants may come anytime, compete
and leave (about 15 minutes to compete).
Where: Heritage Hills Middle School White Gym with registration table on site.
Who: All boys ages 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and girls ages 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13. Youth under age 8
may participate but may not advance to District Finals. Age will be determined as of January 1,
2016.
What: A passing, dribbling and shooting competition.
Cost: NONE
All contestants will receive a certificate at the contest. The top three contestants in each age
group will receive medals at the HHHS vs Forest Park varsity basketball game on February 12.
Medal winners should report to the gym at 7:00 pm to receive medals at half time of varsity
game. Winners will be admitted free of admission.
The top two contestants in each age group will advance to District Finals at Jasper Middle
School on Saturday, March 5.
