Special Request
Dear Friends,
Recently we learned that our custodian, Mark Owen,
who is studying to obtain a nursing degree at Terra
Community College is in need of a new computer, as his
died. Since many of you have often asked about Marks
needs, we are now asking you to contribute to a Love
Offering to benefit Mark and to specifically pay for a
new computer. Envelopes will be placed in Sunday
bulletins the weeks of January 31 and the first week of
February. If you wish to contribute, please leave these
envelopes in the offering plate or the church office. If
you are not able to be in church, you may mail a check
to the church and put love offering in the memo line of
the check. Please prayerfully consider this need for one
of our own.
We ask you also to pray for Mark Owen in his continued
studies and for his family.
Thank You

Preschool News
January was all about Winter and Snow! We did units on
snow, snowmen, hibernation, and animals form the polar
regions. Each unit was accompanied by books, art projects
and learning activities that centered around the theme. We
also started working on letters and letter sounds. We learned
all about S, A, T, and I this month. The children are really
enjoying learning the hand motions and songs for each letter.
I have been impressed with their hard work on their
homework as well!
With the colder weather, we have been spending a lot of time
playing inside. In addition to having free play in The
Fellowship Hall, we have been doing yoga as well as playing
interactive games on gonoodle.com. We have been able to
bundle up and go outside a few time for a quick walk!
This month we had visits from Mrs.D and Mrs.Winkie. Mrs. D.
read Llama Llama Red Pajama and helped the kids make a
quilt project out of cut up pieces of fabric. Mrs.Winkie read
books and song songs about hibernation.
Thank you to all that helped with "Operation Clean Floors!"
Our room looks so much cleaner and brighter. And thank to
Karen Coffin for or organizing "Operation Organization!" We
love our new office/storage room!

OPERATION ORGANIZATION
During one hectic weekend, Rachel Johnson, our
PreSchool Director, and Kelly Markley, a professional
organizer, tackled the nightmare storage project of the
Rae Ellen Dale classroom. (Full disclosure: Kelly is my
daughter and I want to adopt Rachel.) . They managed
to turn it from a nightmare to a showplace in 2 ten hour
work days.
For the last 18 years or so, that room has been used for
many worthy causes including Sunday School classes
and storage for summer lunch program supplies. Most
recently, the room had become a storage area for
PreSchool equipment, toys, paperwork and staff work
area. Everyone could see that it has become so full that
it wasnt good for much of anything.
Kelly, after looking at some pictures of the room,
declared that it was an impossible storage situation the
way it was arranged and volunteered to help. Rachel
and her staff were delighted to get on board with the
project and began to sort through supplies that have
accumulated since the beginning of the PreSchool.
Members of the congregation helped throw out old
paperwork and supplies. Do you use it? was the
motto. It was OK to throw away or give away items no
longer needed. The dumpster was filled twice and
donations were taken to Goodwill and the Portage
Resale Center.
Huge thanks go to all the folks who helped sort, carry,
transport, lift, move and cheer. We also appreciate Dave
Koebels contributions of attaching accessories to the
walls to make it an office as well as a storage area.
Incidentally, Kelly has recommended that a flat screen
TV be placed on the wall in the activity room so the
current TV stand, which takes up a lot of space and
could be a safety concern, can be removed. If you
happen to have a flat screen TV that you can donate, it
would be wonderful.
All the kind remarks about the project have been passed
on to Kelly and Rachel, who are both thrilled with how it
turned out. We hope you are too.

Website & Facebook

January visits to our church web site and Facebook pages
were lower than December, but still a good source of
information about Firelands Presbyterian Church. Our web
site was consulted 263 times this month. 78.8% of visits
were first time viewers; an average of 2.1 pages were

consulted, led by Preschool, Sermons, and Contact Us.

Our web hosting firm, Catawba Digital, has made a
business decision to move away from that part of their
business and focus on Catawba Security. We are
investigating another local firm that they have
recommended for web hosting, Destination Designs,
owned by Tim Wilford.

ComeUnity Caf Happenings

Planning for the ComeUnity Cafe has
continued during the month of
January in several key business
areas. A thorough review of the
kitchen and seating areas has been
completed, and plans are in place to
move a grill into the kitchen, and
install an overmount hood. Two market research
surveys have been created and tested, one for the
occupants of the Sutton Center, and another for
residents of Ottawa County who are potential volunteers
and pay-it-forward customers for the caf. These
surveys will inform the steering committee about
possible hours of operation and menu pricing. Watch
your email inbox for the opportunity to give your input!
Ed Carlson has begun to put together a financial plan for
the operation, and Mary Caracci is drafting a marketing
plan for the months leading up to opening, and beyond.
The Sandusky Registers Melissa Topey wrote a
comprehensive article with photograph, announcing
plans for the ComeUnity Caf

http://www.sanduskyregister.com/Business/2016/01/14/Co
mmunity-Cafe-coming-to-PortClinton.html?ci=stream&lp=1&p=3.
As a direct result of that story, the Oak Harbor High
School National Honor Society has called to volunteer.
And the mens prayer group at Trinity United Methodist
Church has requested a speaker.

In this month I celebrate the one-year anniversary of my work with you. Thats a little bit surprising to me, since,
honestly, I didnt expect to be doing anything like this in my retirement. I expected to come home to Sandusky and
begin to think back on my time in ministry, and not be collecting any more ministry memories. In fact, when I was
first contacted about the position at FPC, I expressed a lack of interest not thinking I wanted to take another
position, regardless of which church it was or what it was like. Im also a bit surprised because not only is this my first
anniversary here, I have agreed to celebrate two more anniversaries here. So, yes, I am somewhat surprised at how
all this has worked out.
Why would I have agreed to not only come, but to stay two additional years? Honestly, I wouldnt have agreed to stay
two additional years at just any church. The fact is I do not think Firelands Presbyterian Church is just any church. I
think in many ways it is an extraordinary church. A church is primarily all about the people, and I have found the
people here to be simply wonderful. They are a great bunch friendly, funny, caring, compassionate. The caring part
means that this is a church with a tremendous heart for mission. It does all it knows to do and can do to help the
needy in our community and in parts of the world beyond this community as well. And FPC is known in the community
for its commitment and its can-do attitude. A member of the local ministerial association said to me, Your church
does things well. All in all, the people make this church a great place. They may not all agree with each other on
everything, but they have agreed to worship and serve together regardless of whatever differences there may be.
Another great and somewhat rare thing about this church is that they know how to have fun together. I personally
enjoy humor quite a lot, and I am so pleased to have found that this congregation always has a laugh at the ready.
And their activities together are fun. Im thinking about the Friday evening fellowship meals, and the summer vesper
services in the pavilion. People here get together and when they do they have fun. I think that it marvelous.
This is a good place to be. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it.

Fondly,

Mark
