If Manistee is anything, it’s flexible
I’ve been thinking about flex-
ibility this week and about adapt-
ing to changing circumstances.
If asked, most folks in Manistee
County would say that this is a
very traditional community and
that change is slow here. As a
relative newcomer to Manistee,
I would have to respectfully dis-
agree.
I think our community is high-
ly adaptable and that flexibility
has been — and continues to be
— essential to Manistee’s success.
What makes Manistee special is
that we preserve and respect our
past at the same time.
Consider our history as a lum-
bering community. A hundred
years ago, the lumber industry
made Manistee County one of the
richest per capita communities in
the country. Today, we honor that
tradition through the preservation
of our Victorian port and through
events like the Manistee National
Forest Festival.
But the world changed and
to her credit, Manistee County
changed with it. We diversi-
fied and now our local economy
reflects that variety. As a result,
we thrive. We’ve all heard Charles
Darwin’s theory of evolution,
which posits the survival of the
fittest, but what Manistee has
learned is that the measure of fit-
ness is not strength or intelligence
(although we have plenty of both).
It’s adaptability that Darwin
referred to and our community’s
ability to change and reinvent her-
self is our greatest asset.

proven to be highly flexible, add-
ing new products and services
and discontinuing others as the
market requires and situations
evolve. One of my favorite exam-
ples is Manistee National Golf
and Resort, which was forced to
accept change last year when fire
destroyed the club house. They
reacted by erecting a tent while
their club house was being rebuilt.
What makes Manistee National a
fine example of our adaptability is
that, when the tent proved to be
popular, the resort has erected it
again this year, even as the club
house is rebuilt. That’s flexibility.
In Manistee County, we’ve
managed to revere tradition even
as we embrace change and that
bodes very well for the future.

moting healthy counties during
the month of April by celebrating
National County Government
Month.

Physician joins
WSMC staff
West Shore Medical Center
announced Adam Anderson,
M.D., has joined the medical cen-
ter staff and will provide patient
care in the emergency depart-
ment. Anderson began practicing
at the hospital in mid-February.
He received his medical degree
from Loyola University Chicago
Stritch School of Medicine and
completed his residency training
in emergency medicine at Wright
State University in 2002. He
became board certified in 2003.
Anderson served in the U.S.
Air Force since 1999 and reached
the rank of lieutenant colonel. His
last duty station was at Elmendorf
Air Force Base in Alaska. During

Sanctuary
Manistee Audubon will pres-
ent “Tanzania Safari,” a narrated
DVD program by Dr. Geoff and
Mary Paine of their visit to the
Serengeti plains, the Ngorongor
Crater, unique African forests and

ing a half-day “When MIOSHA
Enforcement Visits” workshop
on April 27, from 9 a.m. to noon,
in the campus Administrative &
Conference Center Café.
Attendees from both the
construction and general indus-
try sector will gain an insight
of the process and procedures
a MIOSHA compliance offi-
cer follows while conducting a
workplace inspection and how
to respond to citations. Topics
covered include inspection types,
employer/employee rights and
responsibilities and penalty reduc-
tion factors.
This program will also outline
preparation for an inspection and
participants will walk through a
sample citation. The registration
deadline is Tuesday.

From Page 1
North Country Trail. The
North Country Trail covers
4,600 miles through seven
states, from North Dakota
to New York. It enters
Michigan at Porcupine
Mountain State Park in the
Upper Peninsula and leaves
the state through Hillsdale
County into Ohio.
The North Country
Trail enters the northeast
corner of Manistee County
and exits 128 miles later in
the county’s south central
border with Mason County
near Free Soil. The North
Country Trail is marked
with blue rectangle-shaped
blazes, and connector trails
are marked with white rect-
angle blazes on trees.
There are a number of
trailhead parking areas for
the North Country Trail in
Manistee County. Further

the Forest Service’s Web
