Globally, the sector accounts for 10% of the work force, 70% of
wealth, 60% of all utilized materials, 40% of carbon emissions
and 60% of energy utilization. In India, the sector accounts for
nearly 17.5% of the GDP, second only to agriculture and is the
second largest employer with over 50 million people working in
the built environment sector.

The Indian construction industry alone is estimated at $246.5

billion and is currently the 9th largest market in the world,
accounting for 3.3% of global market share2. Growing at a
cumulative growth rate of 8.9%, it is pegged to become the 3rd
largest market in the world by 2020.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

After completing B.Tech in
Civil engineering, I taught as
a lecturer in a college for 10
months and during this time period, I
came to know the signicance of an MBA
in CPM, in terms of our time (Our rst
batch of RICS), Quality (CPM by RICS) and
Cost (of course salary).

Yogesh Kalonia
MBA CPM

Faculty at RICS SBE is the best

one can get in terms of the
industry or academic experience.
When in doubt, I can reach out to any
faculty member and seek guidance,
irrespective of whether they teach me or
not.
Here, I would also like to emphasize about
Mr. Sachin Sandhir, M.D, RICS South
Asia, who is easily reachable at any point
of time. There is no hierarchy, special
permissions required to meet or seek
his guidance. He is the best mentor who
continuously pushes to bring out our
innate potential, by giving feedback on
the qualities we need to build in ourselves
to succeed in the sector.
Amurtya Agarwal
MBA - REUI (with specialization in
investment and nance)

The kind of companies which

came to the campus for
internship placements were
the nest real estate and construction
companies in the country. From Tatas
to JLL every one was keen to recruit
students for internships.

When I joined this school I had

my doubts but only after couple
of weeks I knew that I had
made a right choice as there were ample
opportunities that were available in the
eld of real estate. Everybody wants to
join the best company and this is possible
only at RICS School of Built Environment
as they have every top notch real estate
player come to the campus. Companies
such as JLL, CBRE, Tata Housing, Lodha
Developers and HDFC private equity funds
amongst many other were present, and
there was no dearth of companies to
interview with.
Kush Kapoor
MBA REUI - with specialisation in
investment and nance

I had wanted to go abroad and

pursue an MBA in order to get
some international exposure.
This was when I came to know about
the RICS SBE in Noida. I had seen their
advertisements in newspapers and also
viewed the various YouTube videos. This
helped me choose the school because I
was being oered a specialized MBA in
Real Estate, along with the brand value
that RICS was bringing forward, and
having it for the rst time in India ensured
that I didnt have to travel too far to get
such an education.

The problem with conventional

engineering has been that the
people working in industry dont
have management skills and those who
are working in managerial domain dont
have requisite technical skills. What is
required and what the industry needs, are
techno managerial skills which is what
the RICS SBE programs teach.
This is really a good program. The topics
which we study in class and the real life
experiences which we deal with, make it
more exciting. Yes, this program is tailor
made for anybody who is keen to explore
this sector whether from a business
family or from other backgrounds.
Harshit Gupta
BBA REUI

After attending 2 semesters

of BBA at RICS SBE, I feel how
foolish I was pursuing IT and
wasted my 2 years doing something
that others were doing and I wanted
to just follow them blindly. I nd REUI
to be better in more than one ways as
compared to IT. First I have more than one
choice to follow and secondly I can never
get bored with my life since every job &
every project will be dierent and a new
challenge unlike IT.
Simon Rai Malhotra
BBA REUI

13

B.Tech being a 4 years course

provided technical knowledge
whereas a BBA in RICS provided
knowledge in management and
managerial skills which further impacted
my decision to switch from B.Tech in
Civil Engineering as I can receive a wider
exposure in the industry with BBA from
RICS SBE.
It is a perfect blend of what industry
needs today; subjects like building
materials and construction technology
(BMCT), construction brings you technical
knowledge whereas subjects like
introduction to architecture brings you
the knowledge of how an architect works
and what is his job ,and while subjects
like Accounts and Economics brings you
knowledge of management.
Viral Patel
BBA - REUI

I am extremely happy to be
awarded with a scholarship
and I dont think I can express
my happiness by any means. Receiving
a scholarship in any case is considered
prestigious and that too if its 100%.
Sunny Kumar Pandey
BBA REUI

It was my dream to pursue my

family business through a well
sought qualication that RICS
promises me. I always wanted to be my
dads support system once I grew up and
BBA REUI gave me a superb platform
as it equipped me with the perfect mix
of management as well as technical
knowledge in the construction sector.

Vinayak Jain
BBA - REUI

Infrastructure is a global market and is

the cornerstone of the world economy.
Infrastructure needs are huge - from
micro projects at villages to mega
projects spanning across nations.
Government of India has envisioned the
concept of creating 100 smart cities in
India.
Participating stakeholders such
as government authorities, private
developers, non-government sector,
policy think tanks, domestic, bilateral
and multilateral nancial institutions,
management, technical and legal

We expect to shape such professionals

SOME POSSIBLE CAREER OPTIONS FOR YOU

Asset
management
Construction
project management
Construction project managers
are responsible for managing and
controlling all construction operations
of construction projects. They start
from the planning & design stage and
ensure that construction projects are
completed on time and within budget,
meeting quality standards and safety
requirements. They have to coordinate
a lot of dierent professions, which
involve a signicant amount
of communicating and
organizing.

Development
and construction
Are you willing to work hard and
take risks to develop new properties?
You can enter this business working
for another developer, moving up
to construction manager; or you
can strike out on your own, starting
with some smaller transactions.
Work involves managing labour,
establishing time estimates,
getting appropriate
equipment operators and
construction crews.

Real estate asset managers

establish business plans
and budgets for the project
and monitor revenue, costs,
developer schedules and quality
of construction. Asset managers
also work with the developer to
reforecast plans based on
early warning signs of
problems aecting
the project.

Building
control
management

Investment
banking
Many investment banks
have groups dedicated to real
estate, particularly the repackaging
of mortgages into residential
/commercial mortgage-backed
securities. Other popular areas include
principal investing in real estate and
synthetic lease origination. If you have
an interest in both real estate and
investment banking, why not go
for both areas at once?

Building control managers are

responsible for making sure
that buildings are safe, energy
ecient and suitable for living. They
provide professional advice on the
design, maintenance, repair and
refurbishment of buildings. It
may also include working with
buildings of architectural
or historic
importance.

20

Investment
management
Real estate investment
managers analyze real estate
markets and work out the best
case or optimal scenarios for
development and investment.
They evaluate various projects
and perform all necessary due
diligence for a possible
acquisition.

Construction
management

Advisory
and consulting
Valuation,
appraisal or
credit management
Real estate valuers provide unbiased
estimates of a propertys value and
quality. Valuation professionals usually
work in the credit departments of banks
and housing nancial institutions and
take decisions on how much credit to
extend to the borrower. They also act
as independent land economists to
determine the value of land and
property portfolios for mortgage,
taxation, probate and
collateral purposes.

Construction
economics and
management
Construction economists or cost
managers (popularly known as Quantity
Surveyors) estimate & monitor construction
costs; ensuring that the project is within
budget; preparing tax depreciation schedules;
estimating replacement cost for insurance;
mediation and arbitration. They also advise on
development feasibility, procurement routes,
contractual management, and manage
and advise on all costs of a construction
project. They are considered the
accountants of the industry,
enjoying high levels of
responsibility.

Institutional investors
are purchasing real estate
more and more. Real estate
advisors help investors care for
property and, more importantly,
select property in the rst place
by suggesting areas and
property types that are
likely to experience price
appreciation in the
future.

Corporate
real estate
and facilities
management
Corporate real estate professionals
manage the portfolios of property
held by their organization and are
responsible for long-range planning
of property strategies, acquisition of
new properties for branch oces or
facilities, and administration of new &
existing facilities such as residential
complexes, shopping centres,
oces, universities, industrial,
health and transport
facilities.

Construction site managers run

building sites, liaise with architects,
planners, engineers, surveyors, trades
people and suppliers to ensure that
projects are completed safely, on time and
on budget. They can often be described
as site managers as their role is to run a
construction site. They are dierent to
project managers, who coordinate all
aspects of the overall project, whereas
construction managers are
responsible for coordinating
the building of the
project.

Property
management
Real estate owners require
property managers who are
responsible for negotiating
leases, ensuring that tenants are
satised, that rent is paid and that
rents reect market conditions.
The career of a property manager
requires good interpersonal and
analytical skills and a fair
amount of negotiating
prowess.

Leasing
and sales
management
Such managers specialize in
representing landlords and/or
tenants in the transactions of
commercial real estate properties
for lease. They may also specialize in
representing buyers and/or sellers
in the sale of commercial real
estate properties. One could
even end up specializing in
investment property
transactions
