BEIJING:Chinaplanstolaunchnearly40Beidounavigationsatellitesinthenextfiveyears
tosupportitsambitiousglobalnavigationandpositioningnetworkthatithopeswillendthe
dominanceofUSoperatedGPS.
Chinesescientistrecentlylaunchedanewgenerationsatellite,the21stintheBeidou
NavigationSatelliteSystem,intoorbitonMonday.
EighteenmoresatelliteswillbeputintoorbitforBeidou'snavigationservicebytheendof
2018,staterunXinhuaNewsAgencyquotedRanChengqi,spokespersonoftheBeidou
NavigationSatelliteSystemanddirectoroftheChinaSatelliteNavigationOfficeassaying.
Chinaplanstolaunchnearly40Beidounavigationsatellitesin
RansaidthepositioningaccuracyoftheBeidouNavigationSatelliteSysteminsideChina
hasreachedfivemeters,withtheimprovementofasoftwarealgorithmandothertechnology
development.
Accordingtoearlierreports,ChinaplannedtosetupacompleteBeidousystemconsisting
of35satellitesby2020,whichprovidedglobalcoveragewithpositioningaccuracyofless
than10metersandtimingaccuracyof20nanoseconds.

total,waslaunchedinMarch2015tohelpthenetworktransitionfromregionaltoglobalcoverage.
Onceinorbit,the21stsatellite,thefifthofthenewgeneration,willjoinitsfourpredecessorsintestingintersatellitecrosslinksandanew
navigationsignallingsystemthatwillsettheframeworkandtechnicalstandardsforglobalcoverage.
ChinaplanstoexpandtheBeidouservicestomostofthecountriescoveredinits"BeltandRoad"initiativeby2018,andofferglobal
coverageby2020.
GPS,operatedandmaintainedbytheUSAirForce,isaconstellationof24ormoresatellitesflying20,350kmabovethesurfaceofthe
