Introduction: Beneficial uses of water and quality requirements, standards. Concepts of water and
wastewater quality: physical, chemical and bacteriological examination of
Wastewater characteristics: Temperature, pH, colour and odour, solids, nitrogen and phosphorus,
chlorides, toxic metals and compounds, BOD, COD etc.
Objectives of treatment: Water and wastewater treatment, unit operations and processes and flow sheets.

Collection and conveyance of sewage: conservancy system, waste water carriage system and its
classification, estimation of waste water flows and variation in wastewater flows.
Storm water: collection and estimation of storm water by deferential formulae
Flow in sewer: flow in filled and partially full sewer, design of sewer, type of sewer, material and
construction of sewer, joint and sewer appurtenances, layout and construction of sewer line. Planning of
sewerage systems.
Industrial waste water: collection, characteristics and methods of treatment Physical, chemical and
biological.

Primary Treatment of waste water: sedimentation and chemical treatment to be given.
