VOLUMEASURE
MODEL 29-4522 (CN-980A)
I.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The 29-4522 (CN-980A) Volumeasure is a direct reading instrument for making
field and laboratory in-place density tests of soils. The graduated cylinder (Model
29-4522/11, (CN-983B) used in this apparatus has the graduations permanently
printed on the cylinder walls.
In case of damage or breakage of the cylinder, replacement calibrated cylinders
are available. No further calibration of replacement parts is necessary in the
field; just insert the new cylinder in the apparatus, fill, and it is ready for
operation.
Each Volumeasure is supplied complete with a package of 12 density balloons
and a field density plate. It is shipped in a unitized carton for maximum shipping
protection. Should damage occur, necessary claims should be filed immediately
with the delivering carrier. The unitized carton may be used to store and
transport the Volumeasure to and from the job site.

ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
The Volumeasure is packed in a partially assembled condition. The only tools
needed for assembly are a 3/16" allen wrench and a 9/16" wrench.
A.
Remove the unit from the packing box and set it upright. Set aside the
field density plate (Figure 1,#3). Detach the thin brass pressure tube and
save for assembly later.
B.
Hold the cylinder support #2 and remove the two knurled screws holding
the base #1 in place. Remove cylinder and cylinder support.
C.
Prepare base.
1.
2.
Attach a density balloon to the lip provided in the top center of the
base. Check that it is securely attached.
3.
Install the pressure tube into the threaded hole in the base near the
sealing lip of the balloon. Tighten by hand.
4.
Close the control valve #18 so that handle is at right angles to the
valve.

Prepare cylinder
1.
2.
Loosen the allen screw #20 on the cylinder support until it is flush
with the inside of the casting.
3.
Fill the graduated cylinder with water 1 1/2" (38.1 mm) from the top.
Note: High heat and fluids containing methyl alcohol are
detrimental to the plastic cylinder. Temperatures above 120oF
(48oC) and certain solvents cause cylinder deformation under
seating pressure. Water and ethylene glycol are the only
recommended liquids for the Volumeasure.
E.
4.
Hold the cylinder support by the handle, open end up. Insert first
the steel pressure plate, then the rubber hold down pad inside on
the surface against the allen screw.
5.
Insert the cylinder with water into the cylinder support, turning the
desired graduations toward the opening facing you.
Hold the base by the coupling and valve assembly and insert it into
the graduated and support cylinder. The case handle and the
coupling assembly should be on opposite sides of the assembly.
2.
Insert the 2 knurled screws #22 and tighten, holding the base and
cylinder together. Tighten the screws finger tight.

4.
Turn upright; inspect for leaks. If the unit is tight, lock the jam nut
on the allen screw.
5.
CALIBRATION
A.
Position the field plate #3 on a flat surface. Set the Volumeasure in the
recessed hole in the field plate. Place the rubber bulb assembly (294522/13, (CN-984C) in the quick coupler #17 so that it will produce
pressure in the cylinder when actuated.
B.
Open the control valve #18 by turning the handle 90o and pump the
balloon down until the water level in the graduated cylinder has reached
its lowest point. The Volumeasure must be held firmly down in position
during this operation. Record the volume shown on the graduated
cylinder. This is the initial base reading.
C.
Release the rubber bulb from the quick coupler. Turn the bulb 180o and
insert the vacuum end of the bulb in the coupler. Pump the balloon back
into the cylinder and close the control valve. The Volumeasure is now
ready for making density measurements.

OPERATING PROCEDURE
A.
With the field plate in a level position on the material to be tested, dig
through the hole in the plate to the desired depth. Retain all the material,
which is removed from the hole for weighing.
B.
Set the Volumeasure in the recess in the density plate, open the control
valve and pump the balloon into the hole. (Hold the Volumeasure down
firmly while pumping). Record the lowest point reached by the water in
the cylinder.
C.
Invert the pressure-vacuum bulb assembly and pump the balloon back
into the cylinder.
D.
Subtract the initial base reading from the final reading. This is the volume
of the hole in cubic feet.
E.
Make density calculations based on the volume of the test hole, and dry or
wet weight (as required) of materials removed (Density = Weight).

MAINTENANCE
The Volumeasure requires very little maintenance. Naturally, it should be kept
clean and protected when not in use. Do not store in direct sunlight.
