1. The mechanical system shown in Figure Q1 is initially at rest. At t = 0, a unit-step

displacement input is applied to point A. Assume that the system remains linear
throughout the response period. The displacement x is measured from the equilibrium
position. If m = 1 kg, b = 10 N-s/m, and k = 50 N/m, find the response x(t).

() 1+
Given R = 1 k, C = 1F, if switch S 1 , is closed at t = 0.
(a) Obtain an expression for y(t)
(b) Plot r(t) vs t and y(t) vs t for t = 0 to t = 10 ms
(c) What is the final value of y(t)?

4. The water level h(t) in a tank is controlled by an open-loop system, as shown in Figure
Q4. A DC motor controlled by an armature current i a turns a shaft, opening a valve. The
inductance of the DC motor is negligible, that is, La = 0. Also, the rotational friction of
the motor shaft and valve is negligible, that is, b = 0. The height of the water in the tank
is:
h(t) = 1.6() ()

The motor constant is K m = 10, and the inertia of the motor shaft and valve is J= 6 x10-3
kgm2. Determine
(a) the differential equation for h(t) and v(t) and
(b) the transfer function H(s)/V(s).
