Custers Thunderbolt

North
Hill

Deep Ravine

With the exception of I Troops last minute

arrival at the north end of South Knoll,
Custers realigned defense was rmly
established by the time the Indians launched
their rst organized and all-out attack at 4:54.
Said Wooden Leg afterward: The troops
extended themselves along the ridge.
Held by Troops I, E, C, and F, the defense
line ran for nearly 1,600 yards southward
along much of the Greasy Grass ridge-line.
The headquarters detachment and L Troop
remained on the Knoll itself as combat
reserve. Directly behind the line, to the
northeastwhich was clear of hostiles
were gathered the horse-holders and mounts.
An Indian female named Pretty White Buffalo
stated: The attackers who were left, still
in large numbers, moved back from the river
and waited for the next attack.
By now virtually all of the tribal bands
collectively some 2,400 braveswere
gathered at distances averaging roughly
a half-mile from Custers strongpoint. The
Wolf Tooth group, a mixed bag of Sioux
and Cheyenne, were on North Hill, while
the Agency Cheyenne of Lame White Man
dominated the lower slopes of Greasy Grass
Ridge.
The greatest concentration was in the south.
There a solid wall of Indians extended
across a 1,000 yard front. Nearest to the
river was Two Moon with the Non-Agency
Cheyenne, Arapahoe and Gros Ventres. To
their right stood Crazy Horse and the NonAgency Oglala, the Brule, and Assiniboin.
Next to them was Low Dog and the Agency
Oglala, then Gall, leading half the Hunkpapa
plus all the Blackfoot and Sans Arc. Finally,
on the slopes of Upland Ridge, was Crow
King with the remaining Hunkpapa, Santee,

Yankton, Minniconju, and Two Kettle. Said

Crow King: The Indian chiefs would give
the Hi-Yi-Yi [war cry] in a high pitch every
time they charged. When this cry is given it
is a command to all the warriors to watch
the chief and follow his instructions. Then
each chief rushed his horse against the white
soldiers, and all the warriors did the same.
When the signal was given at 4:54, the
tribesmen had a considerable distance to
cross, so the possibility of surprise was lost.
At rst Custers men simply stood and waited
as the wave of Indians came toward them.
When they got within range, the soldiers
unleashed a torrent of lead that shattered the
charge like a breakwater. The attackers then
no longer came all at once, but in a series of
successive rushes. We
had them surrounded,
said Two Moon, and rst
the Sioux and then the
Cheyenne would charge
them. In our rst big
charge we had all swept
in together.

The Quest for
Annihilation
The Role & Mechanics of Battle
in the American Civil War
by Christopher Perello
Civil War came to the US when the first
shot was fired at Fort Sumter on 12 April
1861. Most, including the leaders of both
sides, thought it would be won or lost
quickly, with a great battlefield collision.
Instead, it ground on for four years.
Battles were frequent, but each one rarely
decided more than the control of a single
town or a few blood soaked fields.
The Quest for Annihilation examines
those battles and the reasons they failed to
produce a decision. The book is loaded with
detail, and is illustrated with more than
320 maps, diagrams, photographs, orders
of battle and data tables (320 pages).

Crowns in
the Gutter
A Strategic Analysis
of World War I

by Ted S. Raicer
Illustrated by Christopher Perello
World War I was the crucial event of
the 20th century, as the great European
powers which until then dominated
the world economically, militarily and
politically destroyed themselves. That led
to a second war a generation later, enabled
the ascendance of the United States and
Soviet Union, and unleashed the forces of
nationalism and self-determination around
the globe. On the battlefield the war ushered
in the age of the internal-combustion
engine and wireless communication,
making factories and science as important
as manpower and generalship.
In the midst of all that, politicians and
generals still had a war to win, and soldiers
a war to fight. Crowns in the Gutter provides
a concise analysis of the strategies and
tactics employed to to try to achieve those
goals. The chapters cover the entire war
chronologically. They weave together
the campaigns and battles with political
events, improvements in weapons and
changes in combat methodology, into one
seamless story. The narrative also has
dozens of maps and diagrams to further
illustrate all the action of the first total war.

With
Custer
at the
Death
by Robert F. Burke
The fascination with Custers Last Stand
hasnt diminished in the decades since
1876. He led his regiment well ahead
of the main body, only to run into an
unprecedented gathering of Indians. The
first accounts were pieced together by
other soldiers arriving on the scene in the
battles aftermath, and by archaeologists
in the generations since. To that
information was added the reminiscences
of the Indians who fought there.
Interleaving and cross-referencing all
those accounts provides a minute-byminute story of the fighting, as Custer
desperately and expertly maneuvered
his outnumbered troops to face repeated
and well-coordinated assaults by bands
of Indian warriors. The resultant narrative
is supported by dozens of detailed maps
and orders of battle for both sides.
This book is the final work of the late
Robert F. Burke, who previously had
authored meticulously researched
articles for Command magazine on the
Texas Revolution and the Alamo.
Available in early November for $ 29.95.

Dear Fellow Wargamers:

Welcome to a new decade of wargaming! This year we are launching a new series of folio games. For the rst group
of 18 games we are focusing on updating many of our SPI classic titles as well as adding some new scenarios. We have
updated the original game systems for added historicity. For example, we updated the 19th century systems so that the
Napoleonic battles will be at brigade level (rather than the mixed brigade and division level of the originals) and there
will be a better treatment of the role of each arm (infantry, cavalry, and artillery). These games are packaged in the
traditional folio folder in zip-lock protective sleeves and most will be priced at $19.95. They will make a great place to
start newcomers to the hobby as well as provide an abundance of quick play choices for veteran gamers.
The magazines just get better and better. Were looking ahead to an increased page count next year so there will be
even more room for more maps and articles. Weve also improved our special combined subscription deal: get both S&T
and World at War for 1 year each (12 total units; Special Editions counts as two units) for $209 (US rate); thats $150 off
the cover price so it is like getting 5 free units!
We also have another book (With Custer at the Death) to release in November after the great reception given our
rst two books. Well continue this new tradition of providing an abundance of maps in our books along with the indepth analysis.
We are launching a line of computer games based on our board games. The rst two, Napoleons Last Battles and
Operation Olympic are in production and will ship in November. Were beginning to play test the Drive series (Drive on
Stalingrad, Kursk and Moscow) and there are more computer games in the works.
Hurtgen: Hells Forest and a new edition of Wacht am Rhein scheduled for early 2011. Weve added more proposals
for future boxed games to the pledge list (marked with a NEW label). Struggle for the Galactic Empire has been a
great hit and the next science ction game, Free Mars!, is heading into development. Our Special Editions are moving
forward with the pending publication of the updated/expanded Russian Civil War in S&T#267 and Famous Divisions:
Gross Deutschland in World at War #20.

Games for 2011

WACHT AM RHEIN
On 16 December 1944, Hitlers armies suddenly seemed to regain the insurmountable skill
that brought them victory in the rst years of the
war. For months Hitler had worked to reorganize
and re-equip the beaten divisions streaming back
toward Germany. A massive surprise counterattackcode-named Wacht am Rheinagainst
the weak Ardennes sector of the American front
was prepared.
Wacht am Rhein, is a tactical simulation of
that enormous battle. The 2,380 counters represent every formation, at company and battalion
levels, which fought in both armies. Infantry,
armor, anti-tank, recon, engineer, assault gun,
howitzer, rocket, parachute, ranger, glider and
headquarters are all included. The four maps
are an accurate representation of the Ardennes.
Compiled from 1944 German staff maps and
1943-44 1:50,000 US Army maps, they show
primary and secondary roads, trails and other
terrain in relation to their suitability for armor
and infantry. Towns and villages, bastions of the
American defense, as well as creeks and rivers,
which cant be crossed by vehicles without a
bridge, are accurately positioned.
Players can use single maps for small
scenarios, or ght a campaign game that utilizes
all four maps and portrays all three weeks of the
crisis. In it, the Germans race to attack in the
face of ever-increasing concentrations of Allied
infantry, armor and air power. Extensive supply,
weather and air power rules are included.
WaR has undergone modication to its
combat, artillery and supply subsystems in order
to more accurately depict tactical warfare. An
exploitation mode has been created for mechanized units to take advantage of breakthroughs
during the combat phase. That movement is
mixed with the opponents to recreate the uidity
that existed during the rst week. Further changes include the addition of high-ground vantage
points that enable units to more effectively spot
for artillery, as well as constricted terrain, which
represents steep gullies and ravines. Additionally, with this reprint, certain game processes
have been streamlined to further speed play. A
Quick Play Rules set is now included that allows
play without as much procedural detail as the full
system. That facilitates learning the system rules
and speeds play.
The order of battle has also been revamped
to provide an accurate depiction of all the armies.
Units are in the organizations within which they
actually fought, not the administrative formations
that were quickly discarded due to the demands
of battle.

HURTGEN: HELLS FOREST

Hurtgen is a grand-tactical simulation of
the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest. The more than
2,200 counters in the game represent every
American, German and British formation, at
company and battalion levels, which fought along
the infamous Westwall near the forest and
the city of Aachen. Infantry, armor, anti-tank,
reconnaissance, engineer, assault gun, howitzer,
ranger, rocket, and headquarters units are all
fully represented in the counter-mix. The four
map sections are an accurate representation of
the Rhineland region, portraying all creeks, rivers,
bridges, vantage points, villages, towns, primary
and secondary roads, trails and other types of
terrain in relation to their suitability for armor
and infantry. Also portrayed is the extensive
Westwall fortication line that courses along
the entire width of the maps, plus the entire city
of Aachen and, of course the infamous Hurtgen
Forest.
Players may use single map sections for
smaller scenarios, and there is also a grand
campaign game that utilizes all the map sections
and portrays over three months of the campaign
(nearly 300 game turns). Hurtgen recreates the
American First and Ninth Army offensives into
the formidable German defense tenaciously holding the imposing Westwall, the city of Aachen
and the virtually impenetrable Hurtgen Forest.
The Allies must force a crossing of the Roer River
in order to break out onto the plain leading to the

Rhine, but the Germans have the advantage of

natural defensive terrain, and are also prepared
to blow the Roer River dams. Extensive supply,
weather and air power rules are also included.
Hurtgen uses the same system of Wacht
am Rhein, though its been further streamlined
to account for periods of inactivity during the
campaign. Nonetheless, all the best aspects
of the WaR mechanics remain, retaining the
systems realism and dynamism, such as combat
modes, overruns, combat prociency bonuses,
regimental integrity bonuses, exploitation, etc.
The maps elaborate terrain characteristics also
remain integral, particularly the various densities
of woods throughout the Hurtgen Forest, giving
players a true insight into the difculty of the
combat there.
The orders of battle have also been extensively researched in order to provide an accurate
and functional depiction of the armies of both
sides. All units of both sides are now deployed
in the organizations within which they actually
fought, not the administrative formations that
were, in reality, quickly discarded due to the
requirements of combat.
Hurtgen: Hells Forest is the denitive
simulation of the campaign in and around the
Hurtgen Forest. Offering the most detailed and
comprehensive orders of battle, maps and rules
ever devoted to this campaign, Hurtgen is a
superlative re-creation at every scale.

Mediterranean Expansion, 200-189 BC

A century and a half later, the Roman Republic was just emerging from its 2nd and most debilitating conict with the Mediterranean trading

Macedon, and his interventions in Greek politics
would soon draw Romes response and eventual
advance to become an Eastern Mediterranean
power.
Even after several years of conict with
Philip, Rome would not rest. Rome found herself
again involved in an immense conictthis
time in Asia. The great Seleucid King, Antiochus,

Decision Pledge Program

PLEDGE PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Decision Games Pledge Program is an
online advance order system in which gamers
may pledge their support for future games
thereby directing our efforts to the games
customers have the most interest in seeing
published. Pledges are a commitment to purchase
a game when published and payment information
is required in order to make pledges, however
payment will not be collected until a game starts
collating in our warehouse.
As pledge support builds, well add more
detailed descriptions, sample artwork, and rules
drafts to the web site. Pledge orders will receive
up to a 25% discount from the nal retail price.
We will provide estimated pricing based on the
latest information we have about the game components and print pricing however the nal price
is subject to change (largely due to the variable
costs of paper and shipping).
When a project is ready to go to our printers,
we send out an e-mail indicating a project is
close to completion. This is to conrm payment
methods and credit numbers and expiration dates
in case customers need to make last minute
adjustments. It is critical to the pledge program
that customers respond immediately to this notication (our nal boarding call). Credit cards
are not charged and checks not deposited until
a project is in our warehouse being collated and
prepared for shipping.
The Decision Games Pledge Program has
published many games. For your convenience,
we are listing the projects already in the works
for the next year in the rst section of the pledge
list. Beyond the next year, there is no specic
timeframe for publication as each game varies
signicantly in size and complexity, and the availability of outside part-time developers to work on
some titles means a longer time. We generally
expect to publish two to four games each year
with the priority given to the games with the
most pledges. We may publish a game from
further down the rankings when we need a good
t to optimize component gang printing.
The pledge games are divided into the same
eras we use for Strategy & Tactics and World at
War games. Many of the proposed games have
longer descriptions or a complete web page
with sample artwork. Games that earn sufcient
support work their way up the rankings until they
are in the top 10 and begin the process of design,
development, artwork and printing. Game proposals that are not making sufcient progress are
dropped to make way for new game proposals.

12

To pledge your support, check your list, make

changes or updates to your list or customer
information, use our new online system to select
the game proposals you wish to pledge in the
Store/Pledge tab of the Decision Games web
site.
PLEDGE PROGRAM UPDATE
(10 Sep 10)
Wow! The Pledge Program is now online!
This means customers will be able to manage
their own pledge accounts and will be able to
check their list, make adjustments, and update
their information at anytime.
All pledge customers have been sent a
printout of their list. In order to continue in the
Pledge Program, customers will need to go to the
DG web site and set-up their pledge account.
There are a lot of games releasing in the
next nine months and all of these projects are at
the top of the pledge list to make them easy to
nd. Pledging will end once individual games are
ready to start shipping so make sure you go to
the new DG web site, review the Dispatch, and
set up your new pledge account and enter your
updated list.
Several new proposals have been added
for future projectsthese are identied by the
NEW! label next to their titles. A few projects
have been dropped due to lack of interest. The

Decision Computer Games. Both of our
part-time software developers experienced major
life situations this past year and so this product
line was delayed. We are moving forward again.
Two games (Napoleons Last Battles
and Operation Olympic) are close to being
nished and four others (Nine Navies War
and the Drive seriesStalingrad, Kursk and
Moscow) are in development. As each game
is ready for production, well announce a release

Decision Folio Series Group #2. We
are currently accepting design proposals for folio
games using the Musket & Saber, Fire & Movement, and Battles of the Ancient World systems.
Most of the games will include a 17 x 22 map
and most have 80 or 100 counters. Designers are
encouraged to contact Doc or Eric for additional
information and to submit proposals. The folio

but we will include updates concerning the next
group on the Whats New page on the DG web
site as well as in our Dispatches.
2012
The games that are currently in development
and appear to be heading to publication in 2012
include: Atlantic Wall, Alamo to Appomattox, Tarawa and Peliliu, and Desert
Fox Deluxe, and Free Mars. We also
expect SPWs Grand Campaign, the nal
installment of Daves WWI series. We hope for
another Excalibre Games group that is expected
to include the Art of Siege series. Expected books
include High Ground (the impact of terrain on
battles and campaigns), Barbarossa, and Joint
Warfare.
2013-2015
Although it is not possible to predict exactly
which games will continue to garner your pledges
and advance into development, there are a few
games we anticipate will make the cut. These
include a new edition of Board War in
Europe, Rome & the Barbarians, First
World War, Wellingtons Victory,
Campaign for North Africa, and Global
War. Other games will be added to ll out gang
print groupings.

GAMES, BOOKS, & KITS TO

BE PUBLISHED IN THE NEXT
12 MONTHS

1. Hurtgen: Hells Forest (WAR system). A

prequel and addition to the Wacht am Rhein
game that can be played alone or as part of expanded Wacht am Rhein scenarios. Includes
scenarios for September, October, and November
plus a campaign game. Two maps, seven counter
sheets. Joe Youst. Est. retail $140 (Est. Pledge
$105).
2. Wacht am Rhein (second printing). The
rst print run of Wacht am Rhein sold out
in just one year so we decided to do an updated
edition. This edition will include updated rules
and counters, and mate with Hurtgen Forest
for an expanded look at the Battle of the Bulge.
Four maps, ten counter sheets. Joe Youst. Est.
retail $200 (Est. Pledge $150).
3. Storm of Steel Expansion Kit includes
an additional counter sheet with iconic naval
counters and additional variant counters. Also
included are updated rules and charts plus new
logs for tracking mobilization plus a CD with additional player aids that can be printed as well as
an Excel spreadsheet to track mobilization points.
Bob Medrow and Doc. Est. retail: $30 (Special
pledge pricing $15).
4. Dai Senso: Axis Empires. At last, the
popular Totaler Krieg system travels to the
Pacic! Dai Senso is the long-awaited game
on the war against Japanit can be linked with
Totaler Krieg: Axis Empires to play out
all of World War II, from the 1937 China Incident
to the 1945 A-bombs ... and even beyond. Dai
Senso also takes a very different look at the
Pacic Theater. Other games focus on the wars
air-naval operations from 1941 on. In the Krieg!
system, those battles are handled abstractly
which leaves Dai Senso free to focus on the
strategic decisions and historical alternatives.
What if the 1937 China Incident hadnt become a
full-scale war? What if Japan renewed its treaty
with Britain? What if the 1939 border clashes
with Russia had led to war instead? What if the
war in Europe had unfolded differently? Now
you can explore all of these questions and more.
Commencing in the Spring of 1937 when Japan
was the rst Great Power to emerge t to ght
from the Great Depression, the land of the rising
sun faces many crucial decisions for achieving
Hakko Ichiu (Japanese world domination). As
the Japanese government goes through internal
struggles, alternately supporting military and political solutions, the single end goal must remain
the sameJapanese supremacy in Asia and the
Pacic. DS will have two maps, 560 counters,
220 Option cards, charts, and that familiar TK
design simplicity. Alan Emrich, Thomas Prowell,
Sal Vasta, et al. Est. Retail $140 (Est. pledge
$105).
5. Totaler Krieg: Axis Empires. This
third edition has been expanded even further to

Dispatch #19

give players more strategic options to let them

explore the critical pre-war period from 1937 to
39 ... and most intriguingly, to link up with its
new Pacic sister game Dai Senso: Axis
Empires for a look at all of World War II, as
only the wild and unpredictable Krieg system can
provide. What would have happened if the Republicans had won the Spanish Civil War? What
if Germany and Russia hadnt signed the Pact;
if France had modernized its army instead of
building the Maginot Line; if Japan had attacked
Russia in 1941? You can explore all of these
questions and more. TK:AE will have two maps,
840 counters, 220 Option cards, charts, and that
familiar Krieg! design simplicity. Alan Emrich,
Thomas Prowell, Sal Vasta, et al. Est. Retail $140
(Est. pledge $105).
6. With Custer at the Death: A Tactical Analysis of the Battle of the Little
Bighorn. This book, with over 30 maps,
presents exactly what it promises: a detailed,
minute by minute, tactical analysis of Custers
Last Stand. Though its one of the most famous
engagements in all of US history, few realize it
was actually a huge battle, lled with purposeful
maneuver by both sides, which was fought over
the course of seven hours across an area of more
than 23 square miles. Drawing on every survivor
accountIndian as well as those of the Reno/
Benteen commandthe author has compiled a
sweeping, entertaining and informative study
unlike anything thats appeared before in the immense eld of Custeriana. Robert F. Burke. Est.
retail: $30 (Est. Pledge $24).
7. Devils Due: Hitlers Strategic
Decisions in WWII uses new data made
available since the end of the Cold War, as
well as the analytical techniques developed in
wargaming. For example, a close study of the
Stalingrad campaign reveals that Axis forces
actually outnumbered Soviet, and it was superior
Red Army operational art that won. The book
also provides some interesting speculation on
how the Germans could have gained a victory in
1943 had they concentrated against the Western
Allies instead of the East. There are also some
new looks at Hitler as military commander,
Allied grand strategy, and the impact of secret
weapons. Joseph Miranda. Est. retail: $35 (Est.
Pledge $28).
8. The Conquerors (SPI update/Excalibre)
covers the campaigns of Alexander the Great,
Romes Second Macedonian War. Two maps and
four counter sheets. Est. retail: $80 (Est. pledge:
$60).
9. A Mighty Fortress (SPI update/Excalibre)
is a 2-6 player game of military and diplomatic
conict during the Reformation period (15321555). The update focuses on a graphics and
rules updateone map, one counter sheet. Est.
retail: $40 (Est. pledge: $30).
10. Ancient Conquest (Excalibre) is a 1-4
player game of the epoch until the Persian and

Peloponnesian wars. Battle with Egypt, Medes,

Arameans, Urartu, Assyria, Mitanni, Lysdians,
Hittites, Elamites, Jews, Cimmerians, Caldeans,
Kassites, Phyrgains, and other ancient nations.
The update focuses on a graphics and rules
update one map, one counter sheet. Est. retail:
$45 (Est. pledge: $34).
11. Battle for Stalingrad (SPI/Excalibre)
will be a graphics and errata update plus some
additional material compiled and developed by
Don Johnson. One map, two counter sheets. Est.
retail $55 (Est. Pledge $42).

ANCIENT

12. Eagles: Battles of the Roman Empire (NEW!) is a game covering the battles of
the Roman Empire from c. 100 BC to c. 600 AD
at the tactical level. The game would use three
different sized units: rectangular for groups of
Cohorts and other linear units; large to represent
barbarian hordes and other massed formations;
and small for leaders and specialized formations.
The game map would use large hexes, and
the positioning of units within the hex would
represent the formation. Thus, it will be possible
to graphically show the various number of lines
of cohorts in a legion. Units will represent all
major troops types, such as legionaries, auxiliaries, cavalry, elephants, barbarians, ballistae,
cataphracts, and so forth.
Game scenarios will be constructed by using
various mixes of units. There will be at least
50 different scenarios, reconstructed by the
designer, to include the battles of Julius Caesar,
Agricola, Trajan, Marcus Aurelius, Claudius Gothicus, Constantine, Julian, Stilicho and Belisarius
among many others. There will be special rules
to show the tactics of each era. Thus, Julius
Caesars legions will operate differently from
Julians eld armies. Leaders will provide command control, and army morale will be important. The game will include two maps showing
various kinds of typical battleelds as well as
historical notes so players can develop their own
scenarios. Joseph Miranda. Est. retail: $80 (Est.
pledge: $60).
13. Titans: Battles of the Greek Empire (NEW!) is a game covering the battles
of the Greek, Macedonian and Roman Republic
eras, 500 BC to 100 BC, using a system similar
to Eagles (above). The game would use three
different sized units: large to represent barbarian
hordes and other massed formations; rectangular
for linear formations; and small for leaders and
specialized formations. The game would include
such great battles as Marathon, Arbela, Cannae
and Zama, as well as going into terra incognita
with Alexanders actions in central Asia. There
would be specialized units for the Macedonian
Companions. Roman legions would have their
Hastati, Principes and Triarii. Leaders would
include greats such as Alexander, Hannibal and
Scipio, as well as not-so-greats. Joseph Miranda.

13

Est. retail: $80 (Est. pledge: $60).

14. Art of Siege Quad (SPI update/Excalibre)
includes four famous sieges: Acre, Tyre, Constantinople, and Lille. This would include an update of
the graphics, plus the naval variant for Constantinople. (Est. retail: $120; est. pledge: $90).
15. Barbarian, Kingdom, & Empire
(Excalibre) is a 1-6 player game that includes
scenarios for Fall of the Roman Empire, Alexander the Great, Pre-Roman, Roman Expansion,
Western and Easter Roman Empires, Byzantine,
Viking, Magnar, and Saracen. The game depicts
the transition from nomadic tribes to settled
kingdoms to vigorous empires and their decline.
The update will focus on the graphics of the one
map and two counter sheets. (Est. retail: $56;
est. pledge: $42).
16. Raiders & Traders (Excalibre/
New!) A beautiful game of Heroic Greece that
combines war with economics, godly intervention, oracles and dynastic diplomacy. Sacricing
to the gods or consulting the Oracle can help or
hinder you in war or trade. Your nation has a ruling dynasty, and if you have daughters and sons
to marry, the more power to you. One can even
mount a raid on another player in order to kidnap
his daughter. Combat is simple. The update will
focus on the graphics of the one map and two
counter sheets. (Est. retail: $56; est. pledge:
$42).
17. Ancient Conquest 2 (Excalibre/
New!) is a multi-player game of ancient
warfare in the Near East from 1500 to 320 BC.
Each player controls multiple nations listed on
their player card and score points for achieving
historical objectives (Britannia-style). One map,
one and one half counter sheets. (Est. retail: $52;
est. pledge: $39).
18. Rome and the Barbarians is a grand
strategic-level, Krieg!- style game covering
the era of Romes expansion and later decline
from 300 BC to AD 500. The game centers on
the Roman wars with Barbarians and civilized
nations, from the time of Romes consolidation of the Italian peninsula through its expansion as a republic and empire, to the fall of Rome
at the hands of the Barbarians. Multi-step legion
and infantry units are built by adding together
basic one-step infantry units. Many special units
exist, including: cavalry, heavy cavalry, siege,
fortress, entrenched camps, archers and naval.
A basic turn represents 25 years, but periodic
Leader Turns dominated by great leaders,
compress turns into ve-year periods.
Strategy cards provide replacement steps,
units, leaders, markers and political events. They
may result in conict between Rome and other
factions, as well as unintended political, economic and social events, including the possibility
of civil war. Romes ability to create a road network determines both supply and movement. The
success of Romes control of the map, compared

14

with the Barbarian players ability to challenge

that expansion, determines the winner.
Maps cover Europe from Britain to the northern coast of Africa, and from Spain to Parthia.
Pieces represent great leaders, infantry, legions,
and cavalry, as well as an assortment of markers
and strategy cards. Two maps, two counter
sheets, one deck of 110 cards. Barry Altshuler.
Est. Retail: $120 (Est. Pledge $90).
19. Intentionally Left Blank

GUNPOWDER & AMERICANA

20. Nelsons Victory: The Royal Navy

at War, 1793-1805. The Anglo-French naval
struggle combining elements of SPIs CA, TAHGCs War at Sea and XTRs Red Sky Morning. The
map will cover from the Caribbean to the Eastern
Mediterranean. Combat will use an evolution of
WaSs and CAs simple systems, with modications to account for the tactics of the age of sail.
Annual game turns are driven by RSMs system
of impulses that shift unpredictably from player
to player, depicting the uncertainties of the eras
naval warfare. Three large-size counter sheets
(528) will depict the ships-of-the-line (64 guns
and up) of 11 navies, plus a sheet of markers.
(Est. retail: $64; est. pledge: $48).
21. Wellingtons Victory (NEW!). An
update of the SPI classic grand-tactical simulation of the Battle of Waterloo. It will include an
updated system to address the problems of the
original edition. Four maps, 10 counter-sheets.
Est. retail $200 (Est. Pledge $150).
22. Alamo to Appomattox (title change
from Glory). Development has started on this
unique ACW game. First, A2A is a grand-strategy
game of the American Civil War in the style of
Krieg! Maps of the Eastern and Western Theaters include terrain, strategic objectives, roads/
rail, naval zones, navigable and un-navigable rivers, cities and locales, supply centers and other
features. Counters represent corps and armies.
Cards provide strategic, political and economic
direction for each side. Strategies are many and
varied, but the ultimate goal is to demoralize the
opposing factions population through military,
economic and political victories while sustaining
your own populations will to ght. The players
each choose a strategy card and an addendum
card before each new season, and each may
opt to play an additional card as a diplomatic response to certain events. The cards lead to new
military units, leaders and replacement steps,
and result in socio-economic and political events.
The events include the Emancipation Proclamation, the elections of 1862 and 1864, and possible
intervention by European nations. Events are
often double-edged, providing a military advantage while negatively affecting the popular will
to ght. In addition, both sides may attempt to
develop and manufacture new technologies, both
historical and speculative, such as ironclads,

submarines, torpedoes, observation balloons,

repeating ries and Gatling guns. Both sides can
introduce espionage and sabotage, which can
have many unexpected consequences, including
assassination. Scenarios are included for each
year as well as for the entire war.
Beyond the ACW proper, there are two introductory scenarios: Alamo, a mini-game of the War
for Texas Independence, and Manifest Destiny, a
Mexican-American War mini-game. Those short
scenarios will give new players an excellent
place to start, and veteran players will have two
scenarios that can be nished in an evening.
In addition theres Crisis & Compromise, a card
game of the period from the end of the Mexican-American War to the start of the Civil War.
Though little combat occurs, the card play covers
the inspiring events, leaders and regional positions (Border States) that affect the allegiance
of states and the ability of military leaders at the
start of the Civil War. Crisis & Compromise can be
played alone or used to create three alternative
starting times for the ACW as well as different strategic situations. Three maps, 560 small
counters, 220 cards. Barry Altshuler. Est. Retail:
$160 (Est. Pledge $120).

two-to-three miles per hex, with game turns each
representing two days. Two maps, three counter
sheets. Joe Youst Est. Retail: $68 (Est. Pledge
$51).

WW2 WESTERN FRONT

33. Atlantic Wall (SPI). The new Wacht

am Rhein system will be applied to the update
of this game. The original game is also being
expanded to include Operations Cobra and Goodwind as well as several smaller scenarios. Six
maps, 16 counter sheets. Joe Youst. Est. Retail:
$280 (Est. Pledge $210).
34. Wacht am Rhein & Hurtgen
Players Guide (NEW!). This guide will
have four in-depth articles for strategy in these
two games plus sidebars on tactics and designer
insightsIt will also include additional scenarios

Wacht scenario to include the northern elements,
and an alternative Wacht scenario. One counter
sheet, charts, and 80-page booklet. Est. retail:
$40 (Est. pledge: $30).
35. Decision in France (NEW!/Excalibre). This game covers the post-invasion period
of the Normandy campaign, from 25 June to the
rst week of September 1944. One turn represents three days; each hex is 8.5 miles; units are
divisions. This is an update of the Rhino Games
edition. One map, 420 counters. Mark Simonitch.
(Est. retail: $40, est. pledge: $30).

WW2 MEDITERRANEAN

36. Med War. S&Ts The Italian Campaign updated and remade with new graphics
and a comprehensive redevelopment of the game
and editing of the rules. Scenarios include Sicily,
Salerno, Anzio, and the whole campaign with
alternative invasion sites to explore. Four maps,
four counter sheets. John Schettler. Est. retail
$120 (Est. Pledge $90).
37. Mare Nostrum. A mini-monster boxed
game covering WWII in the Mediterranean, focusing on sea and air power, from Italys entry to
the fall of Tunisia. Each ship, down to individual
destroyers, is represented by its own counter,
as are all aircraft squadrons, etc. Ground units
are represented as divisions and brigades. The
campaign game will take most gamers months
to play, but short scenarios will also be included.
Two large-hex mapsheets and eight countersheets. Two large-hex map sheets and eight
counter sheets. Mike Bennighof. Est. retail: $120
(Est. Pledge $90).
38. Hitler Moves South. An alternative
history for 1941-1942 based on the Axis focusing
on clearing the Mediterranean and forcing the
British out of the war while building up forces
in the East to invade Russia in 1942. Spain and
Turkey may join the Axis or the Allies depending
on events and circumstances, and Russia might
attack at any time. Two maps, three counter
sheets. Est. retail $68 (Est. Pledge $51).
39. Campaign for North Africa (SPI). This
nearly unplayable monster game will get a x
to the air system and streamlined logistics and

asset assignment to make this the ultimate North

Africa game. Est. Retail $200 (Est. Pledge $150).
40. Desert Fox Deluxe (SPI). Adds the Torch
landings on a third map to the original Desert
Fox/Trail of the Fox games. Orders of
battle will be recompiled with new data. Three
maps, two counter sheets. Est. Retail $72 (Est.
Pledge $54).
41. Anzio Beachhead (NEW!). A battalion-level look at the initial Allied landings and
the German counterattack using the DG Wacht
system. Map scale would be either one mile or
two kilometers per hex. Two maps, three counter
sheets. Joe Youst Est. Retail: $68 (Est. Pledge
$51).
42. Breaking the Gustav Line (NEW!).
A regiment/division-level game using the DG Cobra system covering the battles for Cassino and
the Anzio landings (along with the Allied attempt
to link up and take Rome). Turns would be three
days, with periods of inactivity being telescoped.
Two maps, three counter sheets. Joe Youst Est.
Retail: $65 (Est. Pledge $49).
43. Panzerarmee Afrika: Decision in
North Africa will be based on the Boots command control system, where sub-commands are
activated by randomized chit pulls, integrating
the chaotic factors which dominated in World
War II desert warfare. A new rule will cover
intelligence operations (ULTRA, Rommels signals
intercept service) that gives players some control
over when command chits are played. As in the
original system, reinforcements appear according
to random events, but there will be an optional
historical order of appearance. An advanced air
game will differentiate between aircraft types,
add airbase counters, and provide more air missions.
There will be an inset map for the British
island-fortress of Malta, allowing for Axis air and
amphibious assaults. The game maps will stretch
from the Suez Canal to the Algerian frontier.
Scenarios will include OConnors Offensive,
Rommels War, and Operation Torch. For the
Tunisian campaign, random events can bring in
Gen. Patton who upgrades the US Army.
Additional mini-scenarios will include
Crusader, Gazala and El Alamein. The maps and
counters can be tied together for one grand
scenario of the war in North Africa, 1940-43.
The game will have a wide range of historical
what-ifs: for example, the Germans can commit
the 7th Flieger (Airborne) Division to taking Malta
in 1941 instead of Crete. The British can launch
Operation Acrobat in early 1941 using the forces
which intervened in Greece to instead invade
Tripolitania. There would also be a what-if scenario based on Hitler giving North Africa a higher
priority for reinforcement and logistics, with a
comparative Allied response, including early US
intervention.

15

Panzerarmee Afrika will give wargamers the opportunity to decide the fate of North
Africa. Two maps, two counter sheets. Joseph
Miranda Est. Retail: $60 (Est. Pledge $45).
WW2 PACIFIC
44. D-Day at Tarawa. Based on John Butterelds CSR Award-winning D-Day at Omaha
Beach system, this solitaire game presents the
critical days of ghting at platoon and company
scale. You command the invading American
forces against the dug-in Japanese defenders,
controlled by the game system. Tarawa covers
the landings on Betio Island in November 1943,
and the operations of the US 2nd Marine and
27th Infantry divisions to clear the Island -- the
rst heavily contested landing of the Pacic
War. The battle for this tiny Island raged for four
days and when it was nally over, less than 200
of the 5,000 Japanese defenders remained alive.
One map, two counter sheets, and 55 cards. Est.
Retail $64 (Est. Pledge $48).
45. D-Day at Peleliu. Peleliu focuses on the
landings by the US 1st Marine Division in September 1944, and their bitter two-day struggle
to capture the aireld on the southern end of
the island. A longer campaign scenario allows
the player to extend the action to the rugged
terrain of Bloody Nose Ridge. Opposed by the
reinforced Japanese 14th Infantry Division, the
battle resulted in the highest US casualty rate of
any in the Pacic war.
Like D-Day at Omaha Beach, both new
games feature landing hazards, variable enemy
positions, elds of re encoded onto the map, US
weapon types versus Japanese defensive preparations, and a random-event-driven narrative.
Plus new features unique to the Pacic Theater,
such as: US naval and aerial bombardment,
amethrowers, offshore reefs and defensive
positions, Japanese tank attacks, tunnel network
movement and Banzai charges. One map, one
counter sheets, and 55 cards. Est. Retail $56
(Est. Pledge $42).

MODERN

46. Vietnam. Players would choose campaign

cards that would generate reinforcements and
political events. The cards would replace the
complex political rules often required to simulate
the Vietnam War. Players can choose different
levels of escalation that will generate different
levels of forces, at a trade-off in political support
and military efciency. The Communist player
could choose between low-level terrorism, midlevel guerrilla warfare, or a full scale Tet-style
offensive. The Allied player could choose to
intervene with just US special forces, or mobilize
for an all-or-nothing invasion of Communist
sanctuaries in Laos and Cambodia. Units will
be brigades/regiments and divisions/Viet Cong
fronts, rated for their conventional and unconventional capabilities. The map will cover all of
Indochina. A semi-abstract system will model air

16

operations. Two maps, three counter sheets, 220

cards. Joseph Miranda. Est. retail: $100. (Est.
Pledge $75).
47. Battle for South Vietnam: 1964-1975.
Battle for South Vietnam is a two-player
card-driven strategy game covering the war in
Indochina from the time of the rst US direct
involvement until the fall of Saigon. The map
covers the entirety of South Vietnam, as well as
border regions of neighboring countries. Combat
counters represent Allied and Communist forces
on the regimental-divisional level, and a Support
Point Track abstractly indicates the level of artillery and air support available. The goal as the Allied player is to prevent the fall of South Vietnam
without losing excessive prestige and support
within the world community, while the goal of
the Communist player is to end US involvement
as soon as possible, so he may face and defeat
South Vietnam alone. BSVN is fast-paced with a
great deal of tension, options and decision-making. One map, one sheet of large counters, 110
cards. Stephen van Hoak. Est. retail: $60. (Est.
Pledge $45).
48. Insurgency. Covers the rst two years
in Iraq following the ground campaign, as the
American-led Coalition attempts to quell armed
Iraqi resistance. American, British and multi-national military units are presented on a brigade
level. Insurgency combines stratagems, a hexagonal grid map, and a unique city grid system to
highlight the importance of urban centers in Iraqi
guerilla uprising. The Coalition player can invest
resources into troop increases, infrastructure
rebuilding or act to reach political solutions.
Meanwhile, the Insurgent player seeks to ally
guerilla factions, while waging a war of attrition
on Coalition forces. Each game play is unpredictable, and explores numerous scenarios with the
introduction of randomly-drawn stratagems.
George Carter.
49. Red Dragon/Green Cresent. An expansion
of the issue game in S&T #250, it will include the
original game plus all updates, and an expansion
game (Southern Empires Rising) covering the
Indian Ocean and Middle East. It will, in fact, be
two games, playable separately or together as
a combined mini-monster game. There will be
new scenarios, new variants and new units. The
timeframe will be extended to include scenarios
taking place in 2011, 2015 and 2020. There will
be scenarios for a general Middle East war, Iran
and the Gulf States, a Fifth Indo-Pakistani war,
and an India-China War. Provisions for other
power intervention will be an important part of
the game. Two maps, two counter sheets. Bruce
Costello. Est. retail: $60. (Est. Pledge $45).

STRATEGY & TACTICS PRESS

BOOKS

50. Barbarossa is an analysis of the decisions

that shaped the rst 18 months of the Eastern
Front. Major what-if possibilities are reviewed
including an earlier start to the campaign, an
earlier drive to capture Moscow, a Soviet rst
strike, and alternative plans to 1942 campaign.
John Burtt. Est. retail: $35 (Est. Pledge $28).
51. Joint Warfare is an analysis of the history
and practice of joint operation: the integration
of all military forces into a single instrument of
warfare. The book will include several historical
case studies, such as the Roman use of combined
land-naval forces; the Guadalcanal campaign in
World War II; the US SEALORDS campaign in
the Mekong Delta; and current operations in the
Middle East conict. The book will look at land,
sea and air forces, as well as special operations
forces and other instruments of national power.
One aspect will be the development of bottomup joint operations, where local commanders
decide work out their own command relationships, as opposed to top-down situations. The
book will include numerous maps and orders of
battle. Joseph Miranda. Est. retail: $35 (Est.
Pledge $28).
52. High Ground: The Art of Using
Terrain in Battle. Each chapter focuses on
one battle (not necessarily from any particular
era) in which a single piece of terrain had an
impact on a battle: e.g. high ground for observation, high ground as psychology (the Pratzen at
Austerlitz), a river as a curtain of maneuver, etc.
In some cases the terrain surprises both sides, in
others one commander makes a conscious decision to use it. Chris Perello. Est. retail: $35 (Est.
Pledge $28).
53. Bushido and Kamikaze: Strategy and
Tactics in the PTO will reexamine many of the
common assumptions about the PTO, using analytical methods developed in Strategy & Tactics
and World at War. Chapters will cover topics
such as: Bushido; Japanese tactics are often
considered to be motivated by a samurai spirit,
but the reality was the Japanese military was a
modern disciplined ghting force, organized to
ght a particular type of war, not relive medieval
glories. Carrier battles; these are usually seen
as the major turning points, but the reality is that
there were far more surface battles, and surface
ships sunk more combatants than did carrier
planes. Japanese naval doctrine; this called for
the ghting of the decisive battles yet Japanese
naval deployments after the early months of the
war tended to be fragmented, thereby throwing
away their chance to gain the ascendancy in the
Pacic.
The sharp end; a comparison of Japanese
and Allied infantry divisions demonstrates that
the Japanese had as much combat power as did
the Americans and British, but Japanese tactical
failures were often a result of lacking supply in

Dispatch #19

island battles such as Guadalcanal, or losing air

cover as at Imphal. The air war; the collapse of
Japanese airpower is usually blamed on declining pilot quality, but other factors such as poor
ground support, abysmal intelligence, and a lack
of air-sea rescue service, also had their hand.
The CBI theater, Japans lost victory; the
Japanese largely attained their objectives in
the China-Burma-India theater of operations yet
could not exploit that for ultimate victorythis
will explore some what-ifs. Kamikazes; the historical record shows that the various Japanese
suicide forces were not a revival of samurai tradition but rather a desperation measure, one which
was opposed by many in the Japanese high
command. The book will include numerous maps,
order of battle diagrams and charts, as well as
scenario guides for wargamers. Joseph Miranda.
Est. retail: $35 (Est. Pledge $28).
54. Rommel: Decision in the Western Desert
will be a new look at the Mediterranean Theater
of Operations in World War II, concentrating
on the critical period of 1941-42 when Rommel
established the legend of the Afrikakorps in the
Western Desert. It will emphasize many of the
unknown and overlooked factors of the war in the
desert. Some critical points: Rommel exceeded
his orders in his 1941 and 1942 offensives, possibly dragging the Axis into campaigns which were
not strategically viable yet which had the potential to be war winning events. Malta; the Axis
failure to take the island occurred not in 1942 as
Rommel was preparing to drive on Alexandria,
but in 1941 at the start of the desert campaign.
The logistics myth; the Axis dilemma was not
in getting supplies to North Africatheir real
failure was in other areas related to logistics.
The air war; German and Italian air support often
made the difference between victory and defeat
on the ground, but seldom appears in the order of
battle. Combined operations and the lack thereof;
both sides ground, air and naval commanders
fought separate campaigns thereby throwing
away the chance for an early victory. Leadership,
command control and organization: the Germans
started with a decisive edge in these areas
and the ultimate British victory was not in the
materiel buildup but rather in them catching up in
the non-material factors. Odds and ends; various
special operations forces and unique forces such
as the Tobruk Raiders, Ramcke and his paratroopers, and the curious career of Sonderverband
288. The book will include numerous maps, order
of battle diagrams, and charts. Joseph Miranda.
Est. retail: $35 (Est. Pledge $28).
55. Victoria Fatale is a historical novel set
against the First Afghan War 1839-42. It follows
the adventures of Victoria Somerset-Wellesley,
an adventuress who makes her way through
Industrial Revolution London, Imperial India, and
the Great Game of Afghanistan in pursuit of sinister conspirators. While the character of Victoria
is ctional, she is based on various Victorian era

Dispatch #19

personalities such as explorer Honoria Lawrence,

Crimean War correspondent Fanny Duberly, and
the diva Lola Montez. There are also numerous
historical characters, such as Lord Cardigan later
of the Light Brigade, explorer Sir Richard Francis
Burton, Afghan rebel chief Akbar Khan, and the
infamous Gen. Elphinstone who led an entire British army to disaster in the Khyber pass. The book
includes up front actions in such military affairs
as the Retreat from Kabul, as well as plenty of
mayhem, satire and outlandish affairs. The book
makes a ne companion to the various wargames
DG has done on the wars in Afghanistan and
Victorian era. Joseph Miranda. Est. retail: $35
(Est. Pledge $28).
