LAMP VOLTAGE TESTING

LAMP VOLTAGE
To measure the voltage of the lamp, a multimeter has to be used in order
to make measures for true RMS in alternative and continuous (True RMS
AC+DC), since this voltage is modulated by pulses (PWM). However, the
value measured at DC with a conventional digital multimeter will
correspond to an average value, and not to the effective one, and could
have important mistakes.
POLARITY
In case of power supply connection with reversed polarity, the two
outputs of the flasher will be activated, so the lampchanger will be
also activated or the two lamp filaments will switch on.

PROCEDURE TO TEST THE LAMP VOLTAGE USING PWM REGULATION

The lamp voltage testing in the MBR300 lanterns requires the use of a voltmeter with the
function for
testing Volts in TRUE-RMS (AC+DC). The standard voltmeters in the market can only test VDC
and VAC
(senoidal).
The next process is an option to verify the lamp voltage with PWM, but using a standard DC
voltmeter.
-1 Test the battery voltage. (Vbat).
-2 Test the Lamp voltage (Vm) in VDC mode. (Equivalent to the average voltage).
-3 Apply the next formula to obtain the lamp voltage in Vrms (AC+DC):

Vrms=

Vbat x Vm

Vm= V Lamp (Tested in Vdc)

Vbat= V battery Vdc

3 MAINTENANCE
CAUTION
NEVER make internal beacon maintenance operations
under DC supply
ALWAYS remove the power supply.

3.1 LAMP REPLACEMENT

The failed lamps must be replaced from the lampchanger following the next process:
-

Open the beacon base.

Using a start screwdriver unlock the 4 lampchanger bolts.

Turn slightly the set flasher/lampchanger until release it from the screws in order to
extract it out of the lenses. Caution with not to hit the lamps.
Place the set on the control box and replace the fused lamps.

CAUTION
NEVER touch the clear envelope of a Quartz Halogen lamp with bare
fingers. The oil from your skin will damage the lamp glass after it is
heated and will fail in a very sort time in service.
under DC supply. Use plastic gloves for handling.

Subsequently the lampchanger has to be rearmed by rotating it manually up to lamp 1

position, which is indicated by the red painted lampholder.

The new lamps used must be the same type and power to the replace fused lamps.
Only the original spare parts lamps will keep the original luminous performance. Never
use equivalent lamp for replacement.

3.2 VERIFICATION AND FOCUS ADJUSTMENT.

After replacing the lenses, lampchanger or flasher, you have to check that the lamp
position is the correct one, and in case it is necessary, to adjust the lamp focusing by
adjusting the three adjusting bolts.
The lampchanger set is suspended on a levelling and focus ring by the means of 3
springs and bolts.

To check the lamp focusing, you will have to place the beacon on a levelled surface,
close the beacon and look through a lens, you shall visualize the centre of the lamp
filament with the centre of the black panel, indicated by the hole. The process has to be
repeated at least in two directions to ensure the focus onto the axes x-y.
The alignment and focusing of the lamps is ESSENTIAL to obtain the maximum
luminous performance.
In case of lamchanger replacement the new unit had changed the lamp position, it will
be necessary a new focusing. You will need to regulate the levelling ring position by
tightening up the three bolts described by means of a flat screwdriver of 4 mm, by
blocking the screws and tightening the nut to compress or enlarge the spring.

The focusing only can be checked with the lenses in a vertical position, therefore all
changes in the adjustment require to open and close the beacon.

3.3 RECOMMENDED PERIODIC MAINTENANCE

Cleaning of the beacon and Glazing

-It is advisable to clean the lens cover outer face every two months, although this task
depends on the beacon operational conditions, so that period may be extended or
shortened at the responsible criteria.
Never use alcohol or petrol derived products to clean they will damage the gals
sealants, plastics and paints. USE ONLY NEUTRAL SOAP AND WATER.
The lens panels should be cleaned every 12 months with an antistatic soap solution, in
order to avoid easy dust adherence. Likewise, the lens cover inner face should be
cleaned.
The lens panels can be removed from the beacon pulling from the lens array top side,
and can be easily cleaned out of the beacon.
Be careful about that neither water nor wetness comes into the beacon during the
maintenance operations, to avoid possible condensation in the optical elements. In
case of external humidity, it is advisable the use of silica gel, by putting one or two
bags into the base so that they can absorb possible condensations.

Recommended Part replacement

The next parts are recommended to be replaced under a regular maintenance program
and will contribute to keep the original beacon performances and service quality.
Replacement every 7 years:
- Ventilation Valve M12x1.5 GoreValve.
- O-Ring seal lantern base
- Bird spike rubber Washer
Replacement every 10 years:

4 REMOTE MONITORING CONTROL SENSORS

The MBR300 Rotating Beacon includes several sensors, in order to check the
operation status and to provide alarms:
-Lamp detector: It is a LDR photocell that tests the light emitted by the lamps.
-Lampchanger position: It includes a magnetic sensor in the lampchanger, in
order to detect the last lamp n3 in service.
-Rotation detector: It is a rotating pair composed by a Hall-Effect magnetic
sensor and a small magnet, located on the lenses lower ring.
Lamp detector Rotation detector
These sensors are not used for the beacon control operation (lamp changing or speed
regulation), they are only supervisors of the status, in order to give information to a
Remote Monitoring System about the real status in the lantern.
The lamps are changed by the MF14 unit and it uses lamp current sensing to detect
the lamp status (for remote monitoring, as well).

Finally, the 3 black lampchanger terminals are the connection for the lamp position
sensor included in the lampchanger, also for remote monitoring purposes.
