Introduction-ME 346
Books: No specific books. Several excellent
books available in the library. Instruction
material largely comes from:
Textbook of Heat Transfer: Sukhatme
Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer:
Incropera and Dewitt
Tutorial problems largely come from second
text book above

Attendance: 70% compulsory- below this

action will be initiated. Below 80% warning
will be issued over e-mail your responsibility
to check your email(rollno. @iitb.ac.in)
Below 70% a phone call goes to your home
issue is between you and your guardian; your
clock starts ticking again afresh
No DX grade will be awarded for poor
attendance

Tutorials: Typically once a week

Tutorials will be graded by TAs
70% of the total number of tutorial classes will
be graded on what you submit at the end of
the class. You can resubmit work for 30% of
the total classes in the next tutorial class for
receiving full credit whether you are absent
or otherwise

on, to the extent possible.

Introduction-ME 346
Objectives:
Understand the physics of the problem and
be able to formulate a problem in heat
transfer
Conceptualize real problems. Solve a
simplified version of the problem, relate to
known problems and get a feel for the
solution and then look at the real problem

Course Outline- Conduction

Introduction, heat diffusion equation, 1-D
steady state conduction Cartesian and radial
systems, internal energy generation, extended
surfaces, 2-D steady state conduction,
transient conduction lumped capacitance
and spatial effects.

Course Outline- Radiation

Basic concepts, Emission characteristics and
laws of black-body radiation, Radiation
incident on a surface, Solid angle and
radiation intensity, Heat exchange by radiation
between black surfaces, Shape factor, Radiant
heat exchange in an enclosure having black
surfaces, Radiant heat exchange in an
enclosure having diffuse gray surfaces.

Course Outline- Special Topics

Heat Exchangers:
Applications, Co- and counter-flow, Fouling
factor, Effectiveness-NTU method, Design
considerations.
Two-phase flows:
Introduction to boiling and condensation, pool
boiling modes and correlations, introduction
to forced convective boiling.

Course Outline- Convection

Introduction - forced and free convection,
Derivation of governing equations, Prandtl
number, Boundary layer - hydrodynamic and
thermal, laminar and turbulent, solution
procedures, relation between fluid friction
and heat transfer, Introduction to impinging
jets, Entry length, Thermal analysis of laminar
flow in circular tube, Turbulent flow in circular
tube, Flow through bank of tubes, Natural
convection from vertical plate, Useful
correlations.

General Introduction-1
Transfer of energy from more energetic
particles to less energetic particles. Does not
require any bulk motion of molecules.
In gases and liquids: conduction is due to the
collisions and diffusion of molecules during
their random motion.
In solid: energy transfer due to the
combination of vibration of the molecules in a
lattice and transfer of energy.

General Introduction-2
Rate equation to compute amount of heat
energy transferred per unit time.

(1.1)

K is thermal conductivity (W/m.K) and n is

the direction normal to the direction of lines
of constant temperature. If direction is not
normal then a component exists along the
isotherm which is not possible.

General Introduction-3
Transfer of energy due to bulk motion of the
fluid in addition to the random molecular
motion.
Newtons law of cooling

(1.2)
q h (Ts Tb )
Where h, is heat transfer coefficient (W/m2.K),
Ts is the surface temperature and Tb is some
reference temperature. Direction of transfer
of heat is from Ts to Tb.

General Introduction-4
Energy transfer due to electro-magnetic
waves.
A useful expression for radiation calculations:

(1.3)

Where , is emissivity of the surface. is

Stefan-Boltzmann constant (= 5.67x10-8

is an appropriate surrounding temperature
