Differentiating Curriculum Activities

The choice board is a great activity to have
students work on when a student says, Im
done Ms. Brown, what should I do now?!
Well now you have an answer! The Choice
Board! This is a board that you can change
either weekly or monthly, depending on how
fast your lessons go. Each color is a
different subject, so students can easily
differentiate which one they would like to
do. Not only does this board offer a variety
of subjects but level difficulties as well. A
student has a choice on how hard or easy
they want to work on. Since your students
in your classroom will have all different
developmental levels, its important to offer
a variety of difficulties. Some examples of
the activities offered on the board are:
Reading Activity: write a test for the
book. Include 20 questions. Create an
answer key for your questions.
Math Activity: Write the first 10
multiples of the numbers 2-12
Writing Activity: What is your favorite season? What are four things you
like about that season?
Spelling Activity: Use any resource available to find other words that have
the same prefix, suffix, or root word as this weeks spelling words.

Its important to offer

choice
when it comes to classroom assignments. If students
have a choice, they feel responsible and a little more interested in what they are
doing. When it comes to creating a variety of choices its important to
differentiate
the tasks! You need to be able to offer students a variety of
difficulty, interests, and kinds of activities in order to meet to all students needs.
Of course, you want students to do certain things, so that is why the Spelling
Homework Menu is a great way to guide the students in the direction you want
them to go and still let them have a choice. Not only does this activity offer
students choice but it also brings a little fun into the lesson as it is called the
Menu and they must have an appetizer, side dish, entree, and dessert!

This chart on the right is a great

guide to how to make a choice board
and make sure you are offer tasks
for different intelligences!
Students learn in many different
ways. Some like verbal tasks, visual,
interpersonal, musical, artistic,
naturalist, and many more! In order
to create a choice board you need
to be able to attain to all students
interests and needs that can
connect to your lesson or objective.
An example for creating a choice
board with multiple intelligences is a
spelling list I would offer:
Verbal: Write a journal entry
using all of our spelling words,
write instructions for
something that have our
spelling words in it
Musical: Create a song with
our spelling words in it
Naturalist: Find things
around the classroom that are either our spelling words or something you can
describe it with a spelling word
Body Kinesthetic: Create a game that will help students remember how to
spell out our words correctly
Visual: Create a poster for each spelling words and how you remember how
to spell it

Classroom Layout

Classroom layout is a very

important piece to classroom
management and how you can help
differentiate in your classroom. I
decided to put my desk in the
back of the classroom so I am
able to see all the students if Im
sitting at my desk. I have round
tables around the classroom so
when I do learning stations
students are able to move around
and be where they can best learn.
When I do guided reading I will
use the Kidney table in the back
of the classroom but still be able
to see my other students while
working in small group. I
positioned the student tables like
a L shape so they have someone to
speak to next to each other but
no one in front of them so they
dont get distracted. I also placed
two square rugs in front of their
desks so if I have some students
who cant sit still for long periods
of time, I would allow students to
sit at the rug during some of the
lesson/day.
