~ Neily RoldanCastillo,
Rota Site, NAVSUP Ombudsman (navsubombudsman@gmail.com)
Hello, my name is Abigail Baiden. I am a mother of two lovely children a boy and a girl. We have been in Rota Military base
for almost 2 and a half years. I have worked with the Child developed center on base for a year and now volunteering with the
Navy Marine Corps Relief Society at the thrift store. I have a Bachelor in Banking and Finance and a diploma in child care. I live
off base in Rota, which allowed me to experience and associate with the locals. My priorities are to meet new faces and help
direct them in their needs. When i got to Rota base in October 2014, I stayed indoors for almost two months. I did not know
what to do and where to go. I was so board until I met one of the Ombudsman who made me feel at home, walked me
through all that I had to know, and I promised myself; when i get the chance, I will do the same. Do to my experiences, I
know how it is to be in a new place. The chance is here, and I am ready to assist anyone who needs my help. I love children,
dancing and traveling. I am ready to meet you.

February Fun Fact

Celebrating Valentines Day is much like in the U.S.. However, Saint Valentine's Day in Spanish is called "Da de
San Valentn". Known as one of the most romantic days of the year, this is when lovers express their love by sending Valentine's flowers, cards, candy. Did you know that this special day is named after two Christian martyrs and
saints named Valentine, St Valentine of Rome and St Valentine of Terni? Both Saints were from Italy. In Spain,
they really celebrate Valentines Day on two separate days. The second time that couples rejoice their love is on
April 23, when the nation celebrates St. Georges Day or La Diada de Sant Jordi Catalonias national day. This
public holiday is also known as El Dia de la Rosa (The Day of the Rose) or El Dia del Llibre (The Day of the Book).
Just like during St. Valentines, lovers exchange gifts, usually roses and books. There is a Catalan saying A rose for
love and a book forever. During this time of year you will expect to see a myriad of stalls selling roses and books all
over the region.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month (TDVAPM).

One in 10 teens report having been physically abused by a girlfriend or boyfriend, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In
addition, one in four teens report having been sexually harassed or assaulted. These forms of violence are serious because they tend to introduce a
negative pattern of behaviors in relationships at a very young age. These behaviors carry over into adult relationships, if they are not addressed.
Identify some of the Warning Signs:

Extreme jealousy;
Monitoring cell phones, social media, friends, classes and extra-curricular activities;
Name calling and public humiliation, including cyber bullying;
Unwanted sexual pressuring or behaviors;
Isolating from friends and family;
Preventing a person from making their own decisions;

The good news is prevention works! Teens are very receptive to learning how to manage
dating relationships in a healthy manner and learn well from mentors and peers. They tend not to
repeat decisions or behaviors that have led to abuse once they have learned non-violent ways of
dealing with difficult situations in relationships.

Acknowledgements and Appreciation to the 2015 MWR Committee

for an outstanding year end Holiday Party!! Without your hardwork and dedication this years event would not have been a success!!

S.E.L. Corner
I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday with friends, families, and love ones. As we are ready
to tackle 2016 challenges, I encourage everyone to set some personal and professional goals. We
all should have something in our bucket that we would like to accomplish during the course of
the year. Advancement, education, financial, spiritual goals are always good ones. March is fast
approaching and we all know what event takes place during that month. Please do not wait
until then to start studying. At least 30 minutes every day between now until March can make a
big difference in your test scores and in turn advance to the next paygrade. Good Deal!
Last but not least, good luck to all our Chief candidates on making board this year. The
goal of every Sailor should be to wear khaki whether it is Anchors or Bars. I was inspired by my
BMC to make Chief as a Deck Seaman and I hope everyone is inspired by a Chief/Officer to
make it up to the ladder. Let us all better ourselves every day and inspire one another to
succeed. Great blessings to all on the New Year!
Very Respectfully,

Senior Chief Desir

Semana Santa 2016

(Holy Week)
20 March - 27 March
Understanding Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Andaluca
requires one to gain knowledge about the groups of
people where it all begins. Religious associations or
Cofradias are the people responsible for the care of the
image of Christ and Mary. These associations started in
the 16th Century as a way to bring liturgy out of the
church and into the streets of the people. Each
Cofradias member takes their role very seriously by
