VALLEY SOCIAL CLUB

NEWS LETTER FOR MARCH 2016

Vol 59/Issue14

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

Hello club members.
Well after a brief but cold winter I can finally see flowers coming up
through what little snow I have left in my yard. We had a very busy
winter in the club. The holidays seemed to be good to everyone and
we had very good turn outs on activities because the weather was so
mild all the way into February. Coming up this month
is our annual St. Pats Day Lunch as well as lots of
Enlightened Lunch, crafts and other fun stuff. Stop on
by and take part in what the club has going on.

FROM THE DESK OF THE VICE PRESIDENT

Greetings Fellow Club Members !
Im looking forward to spring after that rough February we had. If
you flip over to page four I have an article about some thoughts I
have and theres just not enough room for it here. I hope everyone is
doing well. Sylvia H.

FROM THE CLUB SECRETARY

Time is going so fast. March 17th is our annual Corned Beef Lunch at
the club. Make sure you get there early because the place gets
packed. Look for the flyer on the back of the newsletter for prices.
Paying your membership has its perks because members only pay $3
for this meal that cost up to $16.00 in a local restaurant like across
the street. Phyllis and Mike go all out! Come by and enjoy this
delicious meal to celebrate St. Patrick Day! Paula B.

POETRY FROM THE PROSE

Submitted by Robert S.
I know spring. I know spring has come when I look out the
Window. Shiny cherry blossoms are already in full bloom.
I read a book in my leisure time on a mild afternoon.
I can feel spring has come.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR GRANT RECIPIENTS

February marked a great month for many consumers in the
state because South Central Behavioral Health Network Grants
were awarded to many of our members. Some received grants
for buying cameras to take pictures. Some are learning how to
play guitars and getting lessons, Some are learning how to start
their own business and some are learning how to use a sewing
machine! There are many grants people asked for and for those
who did not receive a grant do not worry there is always next
year! We will update from time to time to see how each
member is doing and what they have enjoyed
about their grants!

SLYVIA SAYS
For March this year Easter comes Early. So Im actively doing what good Catholics
doing something for Lent is an active sacrifice to prove my commitment to my higher
power. Others of you also practice this tradition. So all our members who celebrate
Easter Have a blessed Holiday! But beware the Ides of March are upon us all as well.
This month while Im busy preparing for Easter we have some things at the club that
will prove to be a good time to enjoy also. March also brings with it warmer weather
the old saying comes in like a lamb and out like a lion or vise versa. We shall see!
What looms ahead. The season changes and daylight saving time happens on March
13th too. We will be having our annual St. Patrick Day Dinner. Always a big turn out
and staff does a great job putting that event together. There will be a Wii bowling
tournament slated early in the month. That will bring out a bunch of us to raise money
for the Domestic Violence program. We do this in conjunction with the bowl- a- thon
day that certain clients who dont have transportation to Milford can still feel they
contributed and participated in some way for a good cause. Those that attend the Wii
tourney will be asked for a $5 donation that will include food and a T- shirt. It should
be a fun day and all for a good cause. Ladies group is going good and Im really
enjoying that too. Im sure there will be other things to sign for so keep checking the
board for thing to do. Just a reminder a kind gesture can go a long way so keep your
fellow club members in your thoughts as we bowl to benefit this month.

YOUNG ADULTS CORNER

"The

squirrel, jumping from limb to limb, trusts his nature like

no human ever could." By Garry Fitchett Submitted By Riley C.
To be compared to a squirrel may seem a little odd, but last
month YAS took a trip where we learned to trust in our balance,
our breathing, and our bodies. We went to Jordan's furniture
store where we were able to do Its Adventure Ropes Course
after getting harnessed up we all made our way to the top, and soon froze
while seeing the obstacles and the height. After trying to persuade each other
to go first, I stepped out onto one direction of the course, and started to go.
Even though it was terrifying to be first, as I took a deep breath in I'd move,
and just focus on getting across. Feeling how to move on the ropes without
stepping too hard onto one side or the other put me more in tune with how I
was carrying myself. Soon, it became easier and easier, and I watched others
start to pick up their speed to see how fast they could get through the course
without falling. The zip lines were what scared everyone at first but soon we
realized they were the easiest thing to do. We learned to ease into a trust with
our movements, which put more trust in ourselves. With self trust, you can
do anything!

HAPPY 5TH ANNIVERSARY !

On Thursday February 11, 2016 we celebrated our Evening Social
Anniversary. Five years ago we had our first Sober Social which we called
it then. That evening 2/9/11 we had 4 participants and the week after we
doubled up in the attendance. Since those evenings were successful for over
two years we were having two separates evening socials per week. We went
back to one evening a week for a while. The members came up with the idea
of a potluck for that special night. There was a variety of food, soda, and
desserts. The evening started early at 4:30pm with a game Wheel of
Fortune, Will B. version, then supper and other games. The members had a
wonderful time and enjoyed the socialization among each other. The evening
went very well. Any club member can sign up and enjoy this wonderful
Evening Social on Thursdays 5-7pm.Any questions please contact Jacques
Maignan 203-736-2601 ext. 1163 or Will Boutwell 203-305-8069.
