CompleteCare Is Open

C
The Vineland Health Campus will be dedicated in honor of
Gwendolyn E. Gould who stepped down from the CompleteCare
board of directors earlier this year after 15 years of service as chair
and 30 years of dedication to the board. She will continue to serve
the board as an emeritus member. Here, at the ribbon cutting, she
is flanked by Curtis Edwards, CompleteCare president and CEO and
Mayor Ruben Bermudez.

19,619-square-foot facility on Sherman Avenue
at the site of the old Lucias Restaurantis now
open. The new building features 27 exam
rooms, 10 dental chairs, two phlebotomy labs, and a pharmacy.
This site is an exciting milestone for CompleteCare,
said Curtis Edwards, CompleteCare president and CEO.
This project has been in the works since 2012 and it is
the first location weve built from the ground-up. Because
of that, weve really been able to think about the design
and customize it for increased work flow and patient satisfaction.
As with all CompleteCare locations, the Vineland
Health Campus will serve all of those who need care no
matter their insurance status or ability to pay. The site
will also continue to be the healthcare home for those in
the area with Medicaid and Medicare.
Services at the Vineland Health Campus will include
pediatric and family medicine, internal medicine, dental,
podiatry, optometry, ophthalmology, womens health,
counseling services, on-site health insurance enrollment
and health education classes.
CompleteCare anticipates that the services offered at
the new location will serve 22,000 patients for a total of
73,000 visits annually. It also hopes to help patients save
money and increase access to preventative services by
reducing the need to seek care in the emergency room. A
2014 study found that 42 percent of ER visits could be
handled in a primary care office.
We want to help eliminate some of those barriers to
primary care by being centrally located, having evening
and weekend hours, and allowing for walk-ins, said
Edwards.
Appointments for services at the Vineland Health
Campus can be made by calling 856-451-4700 or visiting
CompleteCareNJ.org.

Mayor Bermudez Delivers

State of the City Address
City of
Vineland
Mayor Ruben
Bermudez
gave his State
of the City
address at a
Greater
Vineland
Chamber of
Commerce
Membership
Luncheon on
Thursday,
February 18, at The Ramada of Vineland.
The mayor outlined a number of accomplishments and lingering challenges.
He noted future expansion planned for the
Industrial Park to provide for Vinelands key
industries of food processing and cold storage
as well as 800,000 square feet of new industrial and commercial construction citywide.
He also discussed the Citys 2012 revaluation, and that remaining commercial appeals
total just 17.
He noted that Vinelands tax rate, which is
important for drawing business, is the lowest
of surrounding towns, 2.4 compared to
Millvilles 3.0 and Bridgetons 4.3.
Bermudez acknowledged Vinelands childhood obesity rate, which is almost twice the
national average, 40 percent relative to 21 percent
nationally. He gave some ways of combatting that
as well as things the City is doing to instill pride
and efforts to Love Where You Live.

Human Trafficking Awareness

A panel discussion on the topic of

Human Trafficking will be held at
Deerfield Presbyterian Church on
Thursday, March 3 from 7 to 8 p.m. The
panel will be comprised of experts in their
fields. All panelists are dedicated to raising awareness of human trafficking, promoting prevention, and providing restoration services. Perspectives include local,
state, and national law enforcement, as
well as community advocates and
resources.
Human trafficking is a form of slavery
which involves the use of force, fraud, or
coercion to exploit a person or child for
labor or commercial sex. Human trafficking is the worlds fastest growing criminal
industry with an estimated 27 million in
bondage across the world. This problem is
not only global, but occurs right here in
New Jersey.
If you would like to know more about
human trafficking, its prevalence in our
community and how to get involved in
combatting this injustice you are invited
to an awareness night at Deerfield
Presbyterian Church located at 530 Old
Deerfield Pike Bridgeton, NJ 08302. For
additional questions call 856-455-1222 or
see www.deerfieldpres.org

The design phase of the design-build

project to build a new Vineland Middle
School is being delivered through the
school construction program managed by
the New Jersey Schools Development
Authority (SDA).
The start of this project brings us one
step closer to addressing overcrowding in
Vineland, said SDA CEO Charles
McKenna. Delivering a new middle
school will provide capacity that will in
turn alleviate overcrowding in grades
kindergarten through eight while providing a high quality facility that will help
Vineland students receive exceptional
educational opportunities.
The new 99,000square-foot, single
story school will be designed to educate
approximately 620 students in the sixth
through eighth grades. The school will
include 19 general classrooms, six selfcontained special education classrooms,
three small group instruction classrooms,
five science classrooms, rooms for support
services, a multipurpose room, gymnasium, art room, music room, cafeteria,
media center, technology lab, community
room and administrative offices.
Ernest Bock & Sons, Inc. of
Philadelphia was awarded a $36.8 million
design-build contract and issued a notice
to proceed with design on February 16,
2016. As part of its design-build engagement, Ernest Bock & Sons, Inc. will work
with SSP Architectural Group, Inc. of
Bridgewater, New Jersey on the design.
SDA recently issued an advertisement for
the procurement of a firm to perform construction management services for the
project. More information on that procurement can be found here:
https://www.njsda.gov/njsda/advertisement/ST-0017-M02.pdf
Utilizing practices that have proven
successful, the new Vineland Middle
School will be constructed using a designbuild approach, with the SDA Kit-of-Parts
as its foundation. The design-build
method differs from the traditional
approach by allowing for some design and
construction activities to proceed concurrently through phased advancement. The
school will be built on a 40 acre site on
Lincoln Avenue that was acquired by the
SDA in 2004.
Construction activities are currently
forecasted to begin in the fourth quarter of
2016. The building is anticipated for completion prior to the start of school in
September 2018. The total estimated SDA
project costs for the new school, inclusive of
all previous expenditures, are $49.8 million.
The SDAs current portfolio of active
projects is valued at more than $2 billion
including the Capital Project Portfolio,
emergent projects and Regular Operating
District grants. SDA currently has 13
school facilities project in active construction. I

I Jersey Reflections

{ BY VINCE FARINACCIO }

Art Conservator Steven B. Erisoty, who previously

worked at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, discovered
the portraits artist.

hen the restored life-sized

portrait of Matilda T.
Landis soon takes its place
again at the home of the
Vineland Historical and Antiquarian
Society [VHAS], the artist who painted it
will be acknowledged for the first time.
The fact that he happens to be her nephew,
Richard Worsen Meade Landis, son of
Vinelands founder Charles K. Landis,
makes it even more significant.
Its the only image that we have, that
we know of, of Matilda Landis, VHAS
curator Patricia Martinelli said. The
painting has been in the [VHAS] Landis
Room for many years. Since this is the only
image we have of her, and she played such
a significant role in Charles life, we wanted
people to get a sense of whom she was. We
know that she was 44 years old when this
was painted. She had been her brothers
housekeeper for many years at that point.
Matilda moved into the Landis residence
in Vineland in 1875 to care for Charles Jr.
and Richard and remained until shortly
after the death of Charles K. Landis in 1900.
She became housekeeper and nanny at a
time when her brother became embroiled
in the consequences of shooting local newspaper editor Uri Carruth and spending
more than a few months in prison before
facing trial the following year. In time, she
became confidante and supporter of
Charles Sr.s endeavors and established herself as a Vineland figure who challenged the
expected role of women in the 19th century.
We found out a lot about Matilda in
recent years that shows she had quite a personality of her own, Martinelli stated. She
was a lot younger than her brother but obviously a quick study because she tackled
business with the same shark-like attitude
as any man had back in the 19th century.
Martinelli points out that Matilda helped
her brother with funds needed to found Sea
Isle City and, as executor of his will, bought
and sold property like an old pro.
So its kind of important for people to
see that she was yet another Vineland
woman who carved out her own special
niche in the growth and development of
the community, she said.
The painting was packed and delivered
to Philadelphia in early December 2015 and
has been in the hands of noted art conservator Steven B. Erisoty, who previously

worked at the
Philadelphia
Museum of Art
and has been in
private practice at
his Chestnut Hill
studio since 1985.
It was Erisoty who
discovered the
portraits artist.
When Steven was studying the painting, Martinelli said, I asked him if he recognized the artists work because we do
have some art in our collection that was
created by some fairly well-known artists
from the 19th century. He studied it for a
moment and he said, I think the artists
signature is over here, to the right of
Matildas figure. When he brushed the
canvas ever so gently, all of a sudden we
found ourselves looking at Richard Landis
initials over the top of the date, 94, meaning, of course, 1894. So we were quite
stunned that this was an example of
Richards artwork.
Erisoty contends that Richard painted
this piece from a photograph of his aunt
since there isnt a drape, table or any sort
of background commonplace in portraits
of the period in which the subject posed
for the artist. Martinelli believes Richard
was in Europe when he painted the portrait. That would lend some credibility to
the idea of working from a photograph,
she said, because Matilda would not have
been there for any length of time to sit for
a portrait.
It will be another several months before
the conservation process is completed. In
addition to cleaning it and fixing some of
the paint, said Martinelli, he has to do
some physical repair on the original canvas.
The oil paint, in some instances, was
applied very thinly, and as a result it started
to flake across the bottom of the painting,
and it was noticeable enough that we
became very concerned about its conservation.
The VHAS curator also explained that
the Matilda portrait is different from
Richards other paintings. Its very flat
compared to his other artworks, she said.
Those other paintings always had some
depth to them by way of background. I

The Voice of Vineland organizers distributed donation checks last week to six local
charities from the proceeds of the Voice of
Vineland fundraiser that took place at
Merighis Savoy Inn on Friday, January 22.
The VoV event brought together 12 groups of
performers from throughout the community
to compete in a Lip-sync contest.
Donations and sponsorships netted more
than $25,000, which was distributed to six
Vineland-area charities on February 23, during a Vineland Rotary club luncheon. Ken
Dondero, who organized the event with Hugh
McCaffrey, said that they were happy to
announce that, what started out as a "quick
fundraiser" for Rotary and the YMCA, grew
into an extremely successful event that was
able to benefit four other charities as well.
Committee member Gail Marino (and
judge during the event), presented a check
for $3,125 to the M25 initiative/Code Blue,
represented by Pastor Robin Weinstein.
Sherry Soutiere (committee member) presented $3,125 to Habitat for Humanity, represented by Robert Scarpa.
George Steinbronn (committee member)
presented $3,125 to the Spirit and Truth
Ministries, represented by Pamela Carman.
Dondero presented $3,125 to Big Brothers
and Sisters, represented by Donna Bennett.
Committee member Gary Galloway presented $6,000 to the YMCAs Jackie Martine.
Finally, Dave Schad (committee member)
presented a $6,500 check to Rotary
President Wayne Triantos.

On Saturday,
February 13, about 20
courageous souls
braved wind chills of
5 degrees and freezing water temps as
they participated in
the 13th Annual
Millville Recreation
Department
Snowflake Swim
under the supervision
of Samantha Cruz.
The event took
place at Union Lake
Beach on what was
probably the coldest
day of year, yet the
participation in the
event was among the
best ever. The participants who jumped
into Union Lake took
to heart the motto for
the event: Freezin
for a Reasin. The
Snowflake Swim
raised funds, through
sponsorships and individual donors, for the fight against breast cancer.
Proceeds from the event (over $2,300) went to sponsor a local team
NCIBreastto participate in the Susan G. Komen three-day walk.
One local participant, Mr. X, international man of mystery, has been
doing this for 13 years, dressed in a mask and black cape. Mr. X goes
around and helps different charities, according to Millville community leader
Rob Shannon, who knows Mr. X very well.
Shannon added that the Snowflake Swim also provides a $300 annual
scholarship for the most improved member on the MHS swim team. This
scholarship is sponsored by Millville Chiropractic and Rocap Shannon
Funeral Home.
The events organizers and the Millville Recreation Department thank
Sheppard Bus Company for providing the thermal warming unit (heated bus)
on the day of the Snowflake Swim. They also thank two major sponsors, both
of which help out every year, the Venators Gun Club and the Millville Elks
Lodge 580.
We want to thank the participants for a great turnout and fundraiser and
were looking forward to building on this success next year, said Shannon.
This is something the young people who participate can tell their grandkids
about. The kids were very brave with the horrible conditions and I want to
encourage them to bring their friends next year.
Anyone who wishes to join in next year should look for announcements
from the Millville Recreation Dept. or call 825-7000 (ask for Recreation Dept.).
The Snowflake Swim is open to the public with a $10 participation fee.

I Downtown Vineland
{ BY RUSSELL SWANSON, EXEC. DIRECTOR, VDID / MAINSTREET VINELAND }

Millennial
Feedback
Our columnist shares this column with Sarah Bradway
Johnson, the Millennial Advisory Boards chair.

ust a little while ago, I introduced

you to the Millennial Advisory
Boardan important addition to
our Main Street Vineland organization. The board was formed to give a voice
to millennials, Gen X, and Gen Y people,
who are becoming a major force in our
demographics. This is a group to which we
want and need to reach out and attract, in
addition to the baby boomers and others.
The board has its own officers and has had
a number of meetings, in addition to regular
communication among themselves and to
our other Main Street Vineland volunteers.
I want to introduce you to the
Millennial Advisory Boards chairperson,
Sarah Bradway Johnson. Sarah has
become active in our other teams, as well,
and I thought that Id have her tell you of
some of her goals and thoughts on behalf
of the Millennial Advisory Board. Sarah,
take it away
As someone who takes pride in our
downtown, I feel proud to be working with
our future generation of business owners,
entrepreneurs, and professionals that will
be leaders in our community. Our
Millennial Advisory Board (MAB) consists
of volunteers with a variety of skill sets,
educational backgrounds and professional
experiences, and who all have an interest in
seeing a positive change in our city.
We have been working with the Main
Street Vineland leadership and other volunteers and the result has been a list of tasks
that the MAB hopes to tackle this year to
identify immediate and long-term goals.
This starts with getting to know our local
merchants and business owners and reach
out to them about ways that we can help
them. This can include sharing information
about Main Street Vineland services and
events, as well as training and merchant
support available to them. The businesses
can be helped to take advantage of the
power of social media and other online
sources such as Facebook, Yelp reviews, web
sites, and other services.
The MAB is also helping support Main
Street Vineland with their Fourth Friday
and cash assault events. Businesses, in these
ways, are encouraged to offer specials that
will drive more business through their

doors. At the same time, live music and

other activities will be added as the weather
gets nicer to provide a fun atmosphere.
We have a vision to see more people back
in our downtown community, which is the
heart of our city. Landis Avenue has the
potential to be the destination in our
citythe place where you go to shop, eat,
drink, and be entertained. We hope to support as much as we can the great businesses
that are currently in our downtown, while
also looking forward to some exciting new
businesses on the horizon that are already
creating an exciting buzz in the community.
On behalf of the MAB, I encourage you
to join us in participating in great upcoming events like the Downtown Merchant
Meet-and-Greets every other month, the
monthly Fourth Fridays and cash assaults,
the real estate broker tour, Cruise Down
Memory Lane, and many other activities
right here in Vinelands downtown. Even
more than that, however, come and make a
difference by joining us in our work. We are
always looking for more good people to help
us plan and turn ideas into reality.
Thank you, Sarah. I couldnt have said
it better myself. It reflects well on the caliber of the next generation of volunteers
stepping up to take the reins of leadership.
***
Our next cash assault will take place on
Wednesday, March 9, at Health Foods
Plus, 502 E. Landis Avenue. For the entire
day, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., enjoy 10 percent off
any item in the store. Also, all day get a
gallon of special Kangen water freea
$1.50 value. You must bring your own container. From 12 (noon) to 1 p.m., you enjoy
further discounts with a 25-percent discount off any item in the store.
***
Make downtown Vineland your destination for your shopping needs, as well as
for fun all year round. Save money on
gasoline, avoid the long lines at the big-box
stores, malls, and shopping centersand
also enjoy the events we have in town. I
