Architectural Style
The building is classied as Second
Empire. This type of architecture was
popular in the late 1800s during the
Victorian Era, primarily after the
Civil War. Second Empire style
structures have strong vertical lines.
As building materials became more
advanced during this time period,
architecture began growing taller
instead of spreading out. Square
footage was added in the upper
oors with the addition of a Mansard
Roof. This is probably the most
striking feature of the Second Empire
style (architecturestyles.org).

Concept Statement
Warm, earthy, inviting and eclectic best describe the design
of Jenny and Williams condo. A free owing open oor
plan on the main level keeps the space feeling comfortable
and laid back. Warm earth tones of green and tan are
accompanied by soothing blues to create a calming paleRe
throughout the home. The master bedroom will add in
purple color and exotic textiles to create a lush master
suite. Natural wood nishes, curvilinear shapes, and
paRerned textiles will combine to create a space
reminiscent of the Art Nouveau style. The open oor plan,
warm color paleRe, and Art Nouveau touches will come
together to create a space that is relaxed and unique.

Justification of the Solution

The concept for this project was developed based on Jennys preference for the Art
Nouveau movement. Because the styles of the movement are not seen regularly in todays
design, elements such as curvilinear shapes and botanical prints were used to create a modern
take on Art Nouveau. The color scheme was kept neutral and calming for Williams needs.
Busy paEerns were used sparingly and on small surfaces that could be put away if necessary.
The goal for the dining and living areas was to create a space that is comfortable and inviting
that incorporated Art Nouveau elements. This was achieved by selecting furniture pieces,
textiles, and accessories that had subtle Art Nouveau inuence. Curvy shapes on the lighting
and living room chairs paired with botanical themed textiles and art to create a modern twist
on Art Nouveau. In the bedroom, the goal was to create a luxurious retreat for Jenny. This was
achieved by selecting lush fabrics and gold accessories. The color purple was introduced into
the space to make the room feel rich and set it apart from the rest of the home. Like colors such
as tan and green were used in the room to help it blend in with the other spaces.

Working on schematic plans helped determine the best layout for the furniture
placement in the home. Coming up with dierent furniture arrangements helped me to see
which arrangements worked and which ones did not. Space planning played an important
role in the design of the condo. Being sure the residents have enough room to move about the
space comfortably is as essential as selecting the right furniture and nishes.

Reflection
I have enjoyed this class immensely. Learning the basics of residential
design has been very fun and informative. Creating schematic furniture
placements is a great way to see how pieces will work in the design and
what placement best meets the needs of the client. I think the assignment
that will be most benecial is creating presentation boards. It is very
important for the client to be able to see the direction your design is
headed. PuEing all the information in one place helps the client see the
big picture. Being able to present oor plans in AutoCAD is also
important to the design. I always use AutoCAD to be able to see how the
size of furniture will t into the oor plan. If a couch selected is too long
or a dining room table too big the design will be thrown o. Being
comfortable with AutoCAD is so important in our eld and I always
enjoy utilizing it.
