When composing the writings the Indians first wrote what to them were the
principal ideas to be expressed, around this central topic was grouped other
writings to explain or describe them. For instance, if the writings dwelt on the
subject of war usually the arrows used in battle were given a prominent place.
In this pictograph in the cave (No.1) represents the warriors of the Snake
River Indians, as shown by their headdress. In olden times this tribe braided
horse hair in their own forming a long queue, reaching almost to the ground as
shown by the writings.
The Medicine Man or Shaman accompanied them (No.2). The spiral line
(No.3) connected with the wavy lines from the head of the figure (No.2) denotes
"mystery" or "sacred." Hand to mouth represents talking. Three lines (No.4) is
to represent a point near three streams of water in the same locality where this
meeting took place.
The Medicine Man has appeased and overcome the forces of nature of "bad
luck" which had been blown against their tribe by the "four winds" as shown by
(No.5).
Two Chiefs of the Shoshoni Tribe attended this councilor treaty as shown
by (Nos. 6 & 7), who are making the sign for success. They were accompanied
by the members of their band, (Nos. 1 & 10).
(No.8) represents a War Chief of one of the tribes, as shown by his
headdress and breech clout.
Buffalo meat in abundance is shown by the figure representing a buffalo
hide (No.9).
The figures at the bottom of the pictograph represent the second tribe who
were present and interested in the deliberations.

Taking the pictograph as a whole it would read like this:

Two bands of the Shoshoni Tribe met to discuss matters of interest to their
tribes at a place near three small streams of water. They were accompanied by a
medicine man who propitiated the opposing forces of nature and asked for good
luck. The two Chiefs discussed the subjects of moment and agreed upon an
amicable settlement of any controversies between them. Buffalo meat was
plentiful for the feast which followed. Other subjects talked over in the meeting
is suggested in offensive & defensive alliances covering war and hunting rights of
the two tribes. The writing was made as a record of this meeting, showing who
took part in the deliberations, what subjects were discussed and the successful
outcome of the council.
