Dear Parishioners,
In the first reading from the Book of Joshua, we see the people of
Israel celebrate the Passover and also taste the first fruits of the Promised
Land. St Paul reminds us that we are new creation in Christ and we
are ambassadors for Christ and in Him we might become the goodness
of God. What a concept; what a challenge to be representatives of Jesus?
St Luke gives us the story of the Prodigal Son. This is the greatest short story ever
written and told. So often we think only of the youngest son who went away and wasted his
inheritance.
I looked up the word Prodigal in the dictionary it means; reckless, extravagant;
wasteful.
Maybe we need to keep in mind too that it was not the wayward son who was
extravagant, but also his father whom you might say was wasteful with his love and
compassion for his own ungrateful son!
It tells us about Gods love for us. Just as we saw last week the fig tree which
produced no fruit was given another chance!
As we celebrate the Holy Year of Mercy, these are the stories of Gods mercy that we
need to remember.
We then need to put Gods mercy into action in our own lives. We are invited to see
what Gods mercy look likes. There are many aspects we need to pay heed to: some of the
following words read may help unpack its meaning: mercy is: charity, gentleness,
graciousness, forgiveness, clemency, pardon, sympathy, humanity, tenderness, love, justice,
benevolence, lenience, generosity these are just a few concepts to start with!!
These are the qualities of mercy, God shows towards us. We are asked to do the same
to others in return.
A word on the older son who stayed at home: he was such a sad individual, really. He
saw his life as slavery and drudgery; he was so angry with life there was resentment
because his brother went away and certainly when he returned he was angry with his
father too, for being so forgiving he seemed to be just a nasty person yet he was so
dutiful!
We can see all three characters in ourselves at times ... but keep in mind the truth of
Gods love and compassion for us, even if we are sinners.
