The First 107 Yrs.

By Jerry Person, City Historian

s a new century of 1900 evolved and the newly
formed County of Orange found itself with a
growing population, coastal villages with
names like Bolsa, Fairview, Bay City, Smeltzer,
Springdale, Talbert, Westminster and Wintersburg
began appearing. These, along with a beach town
called Pacific City (1901 1903), comprised the western part of the county.
Henry Huntington who owned the Pacific Electric
streetcar lines that ran throughout Los Angeles
County was approached by several prominent citizens of Pacific City to run his streetcars along the
coast to Newport Beach and to put a station at Main
Street of Pacific City.

First HB Mayor Edmund Manning (age 26) and his wife,

Carrie V. Preston (age 20)

If he would, the town folks would honor him by

changing the name of the City to Huntington Beach
as the residents of Huntington Park in Los Angeles
County would do a year later.
When the first of many streetcars arrived packed
with people on July 4, 1904, the residents were ready
for them with a parade, and a free barbecue set up at
the corner of Fifth Street and Walnut Avenue. Some
brave visitors rode the roof of the streetcar next to the
400-volts that powered the cars.
It was estimated that more than 50,000 people saw
the parade that day. It also proved that people would
come and spend their day, and their money, in the unincorporated town of Huntington Beach.
A town hall meeting was called of residents, business
owners and organizations in January 1909 to discuss the
idea of incorporation, the pros and cons were talked
about and the incentives of a stable tax base, costs of city
services, what ordinances would be needed, and what
should be the legal city limits of the city.
In February 1909, a vote was taken with 94 residents
voting for incorporation and just two folks against. On
February 17, 1909, we became a City with Mayor Ed
Manning, a population of 915, and a city limits of just
over three-square miles.
One hundred years later in 2009, the City went
all out to celebrate with a full year of fun events
as a way to remember and thank those 94 residents for voting for us to be Huntington Beach
a place that is known worldwide as a fun place
to come and visit, just as those 50,000 visitors
had done so long ago.

INSPIRATION

America: Home of the Free because of the Brave

If you just want to Walk Fast, Walk
Alone..! But if you want to Walk Far,
Walk Together..!!

My Musings For Today

s we grow older, and hence, wiser, we

slowly realize that wearing a $300. or
$30.00 watch, they both tell the same time...
Whether we carry a $300 or $30.00
wallet/handbag, the amount of money inside is
the same;
Whether we drink a bottle of $30 or $3.00
wine, the effect is the same;
Whether the house we live in is 300 or 3000
sq. ft. the loneliness is the same.
Hopefully, one day you will realize that your

true inner happiness does not come from the material things of this world.

Whether you fly first class or economy class,

if the plane goes down, you go down with it...
ThereforeI hope you realize, when you have
mates, buddies and old friends, brothers and sisters, who you chat with, laugh with, talk with,
have sing songs with, talk about north-southeast-west or heaven & earth, .... that is true happiness!!

Five Undeniable Facts of Life :

1. Don't educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy... so
when they grow up, they
will know the value of
things, not the price.
2. Best awarded words in
London ..."Eat your food as
your medicines. Otherwise, you have to eat medicines as your food"
3. The one who loves you
will never leave you, because even if there are 100
reasons to give up, they
will find one reason to hold
on.
4. There is a big difference between a human
being and being human.
Only a few really understand it.
5. You are loved when
you are born. You will be loved when you die.
In between, you have to manage...!

I am a Seenager. (Senior
teenager)
I have everything that I wanted
as a teenager, only 60 years later.
I dont have to go to school or
work.
I get an allowance every
month.
I have my own pad.
I dont have a curfew.
I have a drivers license and
my own car.
I have ID that gets me into bars
and the whisky store.
The people I hang around with
are not scared of getting pregnant.
And I dont have acne.
Life is great.
I have more friends I should
send this to, but right now I can't
remember their names.

My Grandmas
Elbow Advice
M

y grandmother was giving directions to

me when she had just moved. .
"You come to the front door of the apartments. I am in apartment 301 . There is a big
panel at the front door. With your elbow,
push button 301. I will buzz you in. Come inside and the elevator is on the right. Get in,
and with your elbow, push 3rd Floor. When
you get out, I'm on the left. With your elbow,
hit my doorbell. OK?"
"Grandma, that sounds easy, but, why am I
hitting all these buttons with my elbow? ........
"What . ... .. . You're coming empty
handed?"

YUP

A businessman in the first class cabin decided to

chat up the drop dead, gorgeous flight attendant:
Businessman: What is your name?

Flight Attendant: Angela Benz, sir.

Businessman: Lovely name ... any relation to

Mercedes Benz?
Flight Attendant: Yes sir, very close.

Businessman: How close?

Flight Attendant: Same price.

Sad BUT True

S
ad, perhaps.....But As I Get Older, I
Think Differently
After a long day on the golf course, I
stopped in at Hooter's to see some friends
and have some hot wings and ice tea.
After being there for a while, one of my
friends asked me which waitress I would
like to be stuck in an elevator with.
I told them "The one who knows how to
fix elevators".
I'm old, I'm tired, and I pee a lot."

We believe and practice being fully involved with the communities we serve.
This is essential in building good will, encouraging growth and above all staying connected in our backyard

Dan Salas, CEO. Its massive! Until you
see it in person, you dont really grasp its
gigantic size.
Larry and Olga Smith of Long Beach
said theyve seen container cargo ships in
Panama, London, Genoa, Oakland, Vancouver and elsewhere but this is the biggest
weve seen. A friend in San Juan Capistrano was watching its arrival on KTLA and

them at the port. The French-owned vessel,

flying under the British flag, was built in
China and carrying cargo from China to the
United States.
The green ship, reportedly has nearly a

leakage and has the latest technology.
Its so impressive to see, said KTLATV Reporter Gayle Anderson, who covered its arrival to Long Beach aboard a
special Harbor Breeze Cruise that included Port officials.
Mark Kono, KTLA-TV Helicopter Pilot
said, "To see this ship coming through
Queen's Gate was really a sight to behold.
I've never seen a cargo ship this large and
in fact, it's apparently the largest cargo ship
to visit our shores!"
This is the biggest container ship Ive

tour and were glad we did, said Larry,
who taught mechanical engineering at
UCLA, UCSB and Cal State Northridge.
Its a marvel of engineering.
Its so stylishvery elegant and colorcoordinated, said Olga, a former IBM executive.
Capt. Kevin Nguyen, piloting our trip on
Harbor Breeze Cruises, said hes amazed at
the hauling capacity of the Benjamin

the Bay Area. The veteran navigator said
that guests not only got to see the ship, up
close and personal, but "we actually saw
two whales coming right into Long Beach

civilian instructors and participate in intercollegiate varsity sports and extracurricular activities. They also study subjects like
small arms, drill, seamanship and navigation, tactics, naval engineering and
weapons, leadership, ethics and military
law. Upon graduation, midshipmen earn
a tax-payer funded Bachelor of Science

respects Russian interests, but stops

acceptable to both Russia and the U.S.
The sixth is an immediate mutual lifting of economic sanctions. The seventh is further mutual reductions in
nuclear arsenals and an agreement not
to upset nuclear parity via the installation of new defensive or offensive
missile systems. The eighth is establishing a quick path to Russian membership in both the European Union
and NATO. The ninth is the immediate formation of a joint Russian-US

strike force to combat ISIS.

Would the Russians or we Americans make this deal? I have no idea.
On my biannual trips to Russia, I
meet with high-ranking Russian government officials, current and former.
But I have never discussed such a
grand bargain with any of them. Nor
have I discussed this proposed deal
with U.S. government officials, with
whom I also meet on occasion.
I conceived this deal because I am
deeply concerned about the direction
in which the U.S.-Russian relationship is heading. I'm old enough to remember Nikita Khurshchev pounding
his shoe on the UN podium shouting,
"We will bury you." I remember the
Berlin Wall being built. I remember
the Berlin airlift. I remember the
Cuban Missile Crisis. I remember
crossing through Checkpoint Charley
into East Berlin at age 15, while an
exchange student, and seeing with
horror the bleak city the Wall entrapped. I remember my uncle, a leftwing sociologist, telling me about Joe
McCarthy and the Red Scarce, which
cost many of his friends their jobs. I
remember the Vietnam War, which
killed and maimed so many on the
pretext of stopping Communism,
when it was really about saving political face. I remember President
George H. Bush stupidly and falsely
claiming, "We won the cold war."
All the miscalculations and all the
reckless rhetoric by the Russian and
American superpowers over all those
years have achieved just one thing.
They repeatedly brought civilization
far too close to its termination.
It's time for both Russia and the
U.S. to grow up and cut a deal - a big
deal, which resolves all their conflicts."

Soon, CTC Technology & Energy is expected

is becoming a utility one step at a time. A White

to execute in the next 18 months.

The 40-page report (PDF) was based on five

months of research conducted by the Broadband
Opportunity Council (BOC), which is chaired by
the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and
U.S. Department of Commerce. It recommended
that the government:
Modernize
federal programs valued
at approximately $10

program,
which will help
communities

communities easily identify resources as they

seek to expand access to broadband.
The report also outlined challenges the nation
will face in bringing broadband to a greater number of Americans. The digital divide, the separation between those who have broadband at home
and those who do not, was cited as a chief concern compounded by demographic factors like
age, disability, education and income. In 2012, a
National Telecommunications & Information Administration (NTIA) report found that 29 percent
of those without a connection cited expense as
the reason. Much of the nation's infrastructure has
been established, the report states, but reaching
low-income and rural communities remains one
of the final challenges.
This is leading...this is innovative...this is public service at its highest level.

The France Family's

Iron Fist Has Owned and
Ruled the NASCAR Race
For 3 Generations

he 2016 NASCAR season kicked off

with the Daytona 500 on February 21
By Jordan Kobritz
with Denny Hamlin leading the field to
the checkered flag. But every race team had
already registered a win before the green flag was
flown in Daytona.
Two weeks before the Great American
Race the sanctioning body and the team
owners group known as the Race Team
Alliance (RTA) announced a new charter
system modeled after the franchise system that exists in the four Major League
team sports.
The announcement qualified as big
news in an industry where the folks who
own the cars, hire the drivers, solicit the
sponsors and take all the risks have never
had a semblance of financial security.
NASCAR is wholly owned by the France
Family, now in its third generation of controlling the sport with an iron fist. They
make the race rules, discipline the drivers,
award the races and allocate the purses, all
without any input from those who are most
affected by those decisions.
NASCAR Chairman Brian France acknowledged that the new arrangement is designed to promote a more predictable,
sustainable and valuable team business model which will provide increased
business certainty to teams. Under the nine-year deal, NASCAR will grant only
36 charters. That number includes all the teams that have fielded cars for every
race since the 2013 season but excludes everyone else.
As part of the agreement, the Sprint Cup race field will be reduced from 43 cars
to 40. Initially, each chartered team will be guaranteed a spot in the starting grid,

Kobritz

on

Sports

although there are unknown performance measures built into the deal that may
affect future race entry. Independent or non-charter teams must qualify for the
remaining four spots. Teams can own no more than four charters which can be
sold or leased once every five years with NASCAR approval. And of course, the sanctioning body will collect an administrative fee for each transfer.
Under the old system, the value of each team was
limited to tangible assets, including real estate, cars
and equipment. The latter two assets quickly depreciate in value. Now, teams have a more valuable asset
to sell, their charters.
Along with the additional security, team owners
will supposedly have a bigger voice in NASCAR decisions. Brian Frances father and grandfather must
be turning in their graves at that news. But to his
credit, Brian has operated more progressively than
his forbearers since he inherited the mantel of leadership in 2003.
The relationship between NASCAR and race
teams has alternated between distrustful and tolerant. The charter system is progress in a sport that
has experienced precious little of it in almost 70
years. It provides a modicum of security that rewards team owners and drivers for their commitment to a sport they love. Lady and gentlemen, start your engines!

Jordan Kobritz is a former attorney, CPA, and Minor League Baseball

team owner. He is a Professor in the Sport Management Department at
SUNY Cortland and maintains the blog: http://sportsbeyondthelines.com
Jordan can be reached at jordan.kobritz@cortland.edu.

John Wayne
Airport

n November, John Wayne Airport (JWA) submitted a request

to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to designate JWA
as a "Port of Entry." JWA meets
or exceeds all defined criteria for
designation as a Port of Entry and
the County of Orange believes
that the benefits of the designation are measurable, substantial
and clearly merit the associated
Federal Government expense.
JWA's request included letters
of support from the Orange
County Business Council and the

Orange County Visitors Association. Representatives Campbell,

Issa, Lowenthal, Rohrabacher,
Royce and Loretta Sanchez have
also expressed support for the
designation. In February, John

Wayne Airport Director Alan L.

Murphy was notified by the Acting Port Director that our request
had been forwarded to CBP headquarters in Washington, D.C. with
a recommendation for approval.
While this is a positive first step,
there is a very long way to go in
the processstay tuned!
As of 2015, the largest airlines
at John Wayne Airport were
Southwest Airlines, American
Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska
Airlines, and Delta Air Lines [7]
Federal Aviation Administration records say the airport had 4,584,147
enplanements in calendar
year 2014, an increase
from 4,450,628 in 2013.[
"My bill mandates the
secretary of homeland
security to designate
John Wayne Airport an
official port of entry and
remove it from the existing user-fees system,
which currently puts the
burden of CBP operations unfairly on the back of travelers. Rep. Loretta Sanchez
Republican Reps. Mimi Walters
of Laguna Niguel and Dana
Rohrabacher of Costa Mesa are
co-sponsors of the measure.

Canterbury Shaker Village and Enfield Shaker Village (1792-1992).

The religious society we know as Shakers, is formally the United Society of Believers. Emigrating from England in 1774, this was one of
the first organizations in the United States to give women formal leadership positions in its power structure, believing in strict equality of the
sexes. American Shakerism was founded by Mother Ann Lee. She sent
missionaries into New Hampshire, resulting in the religious communities of Canterbury and
Enfield, which provided leadership in business, technological progress and innovation, and social reform in New Hampshire.

The Orange County Water

District (OCWD; the District)
was invited by the State Water
Resources Control Board, to participate in stakeholder workshops
to provide input on the emergency drought directives. The
State Board has listened to varying perspectives
during the process of

implementing
regulations for urban water conservation
and incentives for investments in sustainable water supplies.
The collaboration has been much appreciated and has resulted in some determinations that affect us here in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley.
First, it has determined that it is best to extend the current

water conservation regulations that we all now follow. The

State Board will reevaluate the regulations again in April,
primarily based upon the mountain snowpack. As much as
one-third of Californias water supply is stored in its snowpacks. Spring and summer thaws usually release the accumulated water for use when we most need it. Recent
predictions call for a warmer than usual winter, which
means there might not be much left by the warmer
months. Even with a healthy snowpack of 110 percent of normal plus a cold winter, the impacts of the
drought are by no means over. Remember, we went
through a severe four-year drought that reduced
water resources all over the state, including the Colorado River and the State Water Project, which provide imported water to Orange County.
California water agencies, like OCWD, have invested billions of dollars in local drought sustainable water sourcesliterally making drinkable
water to supplement declining supplies. The Orange County Water District, in collaboration with
the Orange County Sanitation District, developed the Groundwater Replenishment System
(GWRS) spending more than $600 million to
build the largest advanced water purification
process for potable reuse in the world. It was a
wise investment that continues to pay for itself.
Most OCWD suppliers now receive about
75 percent of their total water from the Orange
County Groundwater Basin. This saves their
2.4 million customers from paying nearly
double the cost for imported waterwhen it
is available. Adding GWRS water into the basin has
also protected the health of the groundwater basin from subsidence and from fouling due to seawater intrusion.
The GWRS allowed OCWD to increase pumping levels

of the Orange County Groundwater Basin during California's historic four-year drought while many agencies were
facing severe local water shortages.
The State Board has recognized that without new water
supplies, the current drought conditions would be much
more severe. It has recommended a Drought Resilient
Sources of Supply Credit for potable reuse, sustainable
water supplies and desalination supplies when state conservation mandates are in place. OCWD retail water agencies
are now eligible for an 8 percent credit, effectively adjusting
their conservation savings, because of the GWRS investment. The cities of Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley
reached their conservation standards, but cities that fell short
of state mandates are now able to meet them.
The State Board provides the credit to additionally incentivize the building of sustainable water supply projects that
will help mitigate the severity of future droughts.
Working in a proactive manner to plan far in advance to
help reduce our regions dependence on imported water
sources is a hallmark of OCWD. The District is currently
exploring purchasing up to 56,000 acre-feet per year (AFY)
of desalinated seawater from the proposed Huntington
Beach Desalination Project and expanding its GWRS to provide an additional 31,000 AFY as a way to increase local
water supplies. These new sources of sustainable water supply would reduce the region's dependence on imported water
sources from Northern California and the Colorado River
that are vulnerable to drought, natural disasters and regulatory restrictions even further.
The District is pleased with the acknowledgement of investments in sustainable water supplieslike potable reuse
and desalinated waterand will continue to provide input
and guidance, working with the state and its staff on future
drought-related regulations for the betterment of Orange
County and the state of California.

EarthTalk

Dear EarthTalk:
Are genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
really so bad for us and the
environment, and given their prevalence in our food supply
already, how can I avoid them?
~ Dianne Mercurio, Richmond, VA

Unless you only buy foods that are certified organic or

marked as GMO-free, odds are that a great deal of the food
you eat contains genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
But are you risking your health and damaging the environment by eating GMOs? Not according to Monsanto, the agricultural biotechnology company that is a leading producer of
GM seed. Monsanto contends that GMOs are safe to eat and
that seeds with GM traits have been tested more than any
other crops in the history of agriculturewith no credible

evidence of harm to humans or animals.

The company also points to studies that have positively assessed the safety of GMOs, including the 2010 European
Commission report summarizing the results of 50 research
projects addressing the safety of GMOs for the environment
as well as for animal and human health. In announcing the
report, the Commission stated that there is, as of today, no
scientific evidence associating GMOs with higher risks for
the environment or for food and feed safety than conventional
plants.
Of course, not everyone agrees. According to the nonprofit Non-GMO Project, genetically modified crops and
food items can contaminate conventional crops and foods
through cross-pollination and/or contamination. Also, since
many GM crops are designed to be immune to herbicides and
pesticides, farmers have increased their use of various weed
and bug killing chemicals to keep competition for their cash
crops at bay. The resulting overuse
of these chemicals has led to a
rapid evolution of super weeds
and super bugs that can quickly
take over unmaintained or wild
lands.
Given the prevalence of GMOs
in our food supply already, the
non-profit Just Label It believes labeling everything that contains
GMOs would be a start so at least
consumers can choose on their
own what they put in their bodies.
Some 64 countries around the
worldincluding China, Japan,
Australia, Brazil, Russia and 28
nations in the European Union
currently require labeling on foods
created with GMOs. Just Label It
is one of many activist voices calling on the United States to follow
suit. The group has created an online petition so everyday Americans can let the U.S. Food & Drug
Administration (FDA) know that

they have the right to know whats in their food, especially

when it comes to GMOs.
But until we have federal rules in place requiring labeling,
concerned consumers will have to take matters into their own
hands when it comes to ferreting out the GMO content of
what they eat. Luckily the Non-GMO Project is helping make
it easier by offering verified products the opportunity to display its Non-GMO symbol on their labels. Currently the
group has verified some 35,000 food products across 1,900
different brands commonly available on U.S. store shelves
as GMO-free, representing annual sales topping $13.5 billion.
Meanwhile, Whole Foods has stepped up its support of GMO
labeling by instituting a new policy of full GMO transparency in all of its North American stores by 2018.
Beyond just labeling, though, Whole Foods is also working
with many of its suppliers to transition to ingredients from
non-GMO sources altogether. Activists hope that this leadership will trickle down to mainstream grocers as well.

ince my last report on New Zealand, Ive tasted
through a range of bottles and found some tasty
and value-driven wines. New Zealand
really has the $12-$20 range dialed in, as
producers continue to put out fan-friendly,
popular Sauvignon Blancs, Chardonnays
and Pinot Noirs.
Sure you can spend a lot of money in
New Zealand, but for many wine drinkers
(myself included) wines like these gave me
a pleasant and rewarding introduction to
this countrys vino.
These wines were received as trade samples and tasted sighted.

ale straw color. Bright and
crunchy on the nose with bell
pepper, white pepper and asparagus
on top of white peaches and limes.
Punchy and tart on the palate,
brisk but slightly creamy, too.
Limes, grapefruit, lemon pith,
mixed with green pepper, grass
and a slight mineral note. Crisp,
clean, bright, this is a reasonably
priced wine that is representational
of its grape and place. (85 points

flavor profile I get, add in some saline, white pepper,
green onion, crushed chalk and honeysuckle. A fresh,
interesting example, the complexity is impressive at
this price point. (87 points IJB)

tangerine, matched with flavors of lemongrass,
green pepper and sliced jalapeno. Bright acid, moderately creamy, juicy flavors of tangerine and ruby red

and honeysuckle. Not very complex, but plays the
part very well. (85 points IJB)

eep ruby color. Aromas of juicy black cherries,
raspberry jam, sweet cranberry sauce, hints of

approach with juicy red cherries, cranberries in sauce
and wild strawberries. Some interesting spice elements, tobacco, rhubarb, white pepper. Nice tartness,
soft tannins, some smoky earth notes. Fun, a bit simple, but solid. (86 points IJB)

peaches, creamy pears, sliced limes,
clean laundry and white floral tones. Vibrant
acidity on the palate, this is a precise wine but
shows enough creaminess to add some depth.
Flavors of green apples, green and yellow
pears, tangerine, the fruit is bright and zesty
but full of creamy complexity. I get salt air,
river rocks, honeysuckle and a deep mineral
concentration as well. This Chardonnay is impressive for its purity and complexity, let
alone for its price point. (89 points IJB)

crunchy, combining for a mouthfeel that is slightly
chewy but incredibly vibrant. Juicy black cherries
mix with tart red currants, and the fruit is dusted
with tobacco, white pepper, black tea, rose hips and
hints of mushroom. Long, quite complex, this is an
elegant Pinot that punches above its weight in terms
of price. Aged 10 months in 25% new French oak.

him The Least Honorable Man in

lawsuit alleging that the beer ad star

Jonathan Goldsmith filed the
countersuit Feb. 9 in Los Angeles
Superior Court against Butch Klein
and Gold Levin Talent. The suit alleges Klein wrongfully disclosed the
terms of a 2012 Dos Equis-Goldsmith contract and had no role in
connection with securing or managing Goldsmiths deals with the beer

The countersuit describes Klein,
also known as Tim Jordan, as a

An attorney for Klein and Gold

Gold Levin Talent started the litigation by suing Goldsmith Oct. 2,

Hey Abbott: You Running for President

in America .

COSTELLO: That many people are out of work?

ABBOTT: No, thats 23%.

out of work.
ABBOTT: No, thats 23%.

COSTELLO: Okay, so its

23% unemployed.
ABBOTT: No, thats 5.6%.

COSTELLO: WAIT A MINUTE. Is it 5.6% or 23%?

ABBOTT: 5.6% are unemployed. 23% are out of work.

COSTELLO: If you are out of work you are unemployed.

The Local News, March 01, 2016 hbnews1@aol.com 714.914.9797

ABBOTT: No, the President said you can't count the Out
of Work as the unemployed. You have to look for work to

26

be unemployed.

COSTELLO: BUT THEY ARE OUT OF WORK!!!

ABBOTT: No, you miss his point.

COSTELLO:
What point?

ABBOTT: Someone who doesnt

look for work
cant be counted
with those who
look for work. It
wouldnt be fair.

COSTELLO: To
whom?

ABBOTT: The
unemployed.

COSTELLO: But ALL of them are out of work.

ABBOTT: No, the unemployed are actively looking for

work. Those who are out of work gave up looking and if
you give up, you are no longer in the ranks of the unemployed.

COSTELLO: So if youre off the unemployment roles that

would count as less unemployment?

ABBOTT: Unemployment would go down. Absolutely!

COSTELLO: The unemployment just goes down because

you dont look for work?

ABBOT : Absolutely it goes down. Thats how it gets to

5.6%. Otherwise it would be 23%.
COSTELLO : Wait, I got a question for you. That means
there are two ways to bring down the unemployment number?
ABBOTT: Two ways is correct.

COSTELLO: Unemployment can go down if someone gets

a job?
ABBOTT: Correct.

COSTELLO: And unemployment can also go down if you

stop looking for a job?
ABBOTT Bingo.

COSTELLO: So there are two ways to bring unemployment down, and the easier of the two is to have people stop
looking for work.
ABBOTT: Now you're thinking like them...

COSTELLO: I don't even know what the heck I just said!

ABBOTT: Now you're thinking like a presidential candidate.

The Car You

Drive Predicts
Your Favorite
Presidential
Candidate

Wow!

"something like "electric car owners are more

likely to support Hillary Clinton relative to the
background population. This does not mean that
electric car owners support Hillary more than
Bernie. This means that the percentage of votes
for Hillary among electric car owners is greater
than the percentage of votes for Hillary among
the entire poll population, and that this difference is statistically significant." Got it? Good.
And now, on to the results. Or should we say,
"results"? Highlights from the PDF:
Bernie Sanders supporters are statistically
more likely to drive Honda, Subaru, or Volvo,
while Hillary Clinton supporters are statistically
more likely drive Toyota, Lexus, and Acura.
Supporters of Republican candidates (specifically Trump, Cruz, and Rubio) are more likely
to drive truck brands like Ford, Chevrolet, or
Dodge, and less likely to drive Toyotas.
Prius owners support Hillary Clinton 40%
more than the general population, and support
Ted Cruz 126% more than the general population. Similarly, Dodge owners favor Trump 50%
more than the general population.
Toyota Camry drivers are more statistically

likely to support a Democrat, and Honda Accord

and Ford Fusion drivers are more likely to support a Republican.
Ben Carson supporters also tended to drive
more fuel-efficient cars, in line with Hillary and
Bernie, but this could be slightly skewed by the
smaller population of votes for him and the fact
that he had multiple Tesla owners (whose MPG
was set at 100).
Sanders, Cruz, and Clinton supporters drive
the cheapest cars on average, and Fiorina, Kasich, and Stein supporters drive the most expensive cars on average.
Electric car owners are more statistically likely
to support a Democrat. They are more likely to
support Hillary Clinton than the general population is, and less likely to support Ted Cruz.
Get the full details for yourself here.
The absolute most baffling result (to me) is
that, of the two percent of those 10,000 respondents (so, 200 people), one of the top three
"most statistically likely models" was the Think
City. For those who don't know, that's the quirky,
plastic, two-seat EV that filed for bankruptcy in

who doesn't like politics mixed
in with their car news: stop
reading now. For everyone else,
buckle in, because a new survey says you can
make some predictions about what presidential
candidate a person supports is based solely on
what car they drive. Turns out, for example, that
Dodge drivers love them some Donald Trump.
And, for some reason, Prius drivers get behind
Hillary Clinton and Ted Cruz.
BestRide and CarTalk issued the survey,
which asked over 10,000 people two simple
questions: what brand of car did they drive and
which presidential candidate did they support.
Since the survey was an online opt-in affair on
the CarTalk website, it doesn't qualify as anything close to a scientifically accurate. In other
words, have fun with this, folks (all the GIFs
here should reinforce that message).

2016 a Tough
Year for Buyers

edia sources are predicting

2016 will likely be a very difficult year for prospective
homebuyers. The biggest problem: a lack of inventory.
There just isnt enough supply of houses for sale to satisfy the demand of buyers.
When this happens, a listed property is likely to receive offers
from multiple buyers. A bidding war is not at all uncommon and
houses will frequently sell for a value over what the property was
originally listed for. This process repeated over and over pushes
up property values, and 2016 is likely to be a strong year for
property values.
This process can also become very tiresome for
buyers. Some buyers will make offers on dozens of
different homes and not get a single one. Some
buyers become frustrated with the process and put
off looking until there is more inventory available and they dont have to play the game this
way.
Other buyers become frustrated with the
increase in values, stating that they dont want
to overpay for something. Unfortunately,
this thinking is flawed. A home that was
once valued at $400,000 may now be
worth $450,000. Trying to purchase it for
the $400,000 it was valued at just a few
months earlier is no longer reasonable. The
base price on a 1963 Corvette was $4,257.
Trying to buy that same car today for the
same price is just as unreasonable as trying
to purchase a home for what it was worth
a few months back. The market price has
moved.
But lets take a look at the math. Someone buying that $450,000
house with 20% down would have a loan amount of $360,000. At

Arnaud Dufour

todays
thirty
year fixed rate of 3.625% that mortgage would yield a payment of
$1641.78.
Lets say that house were to drop back down to a $400,000 value.
Of course, this is not likely to happen anytime in the foreseeable
future, but lets say that it does happen a year from now. Putting
20% down would leave a loan amount of $320,000. In a years time,
mortgage rates are projected to be back up near 5%. At a 5.0% interest rate, the payment on that lesser mortgage would be
$1717.83. This lesser valued home would
cost $76.05 more per month.
The big challenge in these numbers is
that property values are projected to
continue climbing. The steady
and consistent increase in values we are experiencing is
nothing like rapid rise we
saw right before the crash.
The factors leading the
rise are completely different than last time. Just
like old corvettes, we
cannot go back in time to
buy them for a
price thats no longer
available.
With prices and rates
both expected to rise
over the next year, the
bottom
line
for
prospective buyers is to buy sooner than later.
Even if that house costs slightly more than it would have just a few
months earlier, that same house will likely cost even more just a
few more months down the line.

he benefits of nitrogenfilled tires for vehicle owners include tires that last
50% longer and fail 75% less
often. For the environment, this
means that fewer tires are disposed of. Through the new partnership, NitroFill is planting a tree
for each vehicle with nitrogenfilled tires that Huntington Beach
Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram sells. In
2015, 12,000 trees were planted as
a result of the partnership.

Plants use the carbon in the environment to produce energy and

make the air cleaner during the
process. This process is a carbon
sink, offsetting some emissions created from vehicles.
In California, 40 million tires are
disposed of each year. Some are recycled, but most are burned, which
creates considerable amounts of air
pollution in the process. Huntington
Beach Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram
hopes that by selling vehicles with

nitrogen-filled tires, they can reduce the amount of pollution being

released into the environment.
We want people to know that
the environment is important, and
that we seek to engage our customers to work with us in progressive ways that make a difference,
said Pete Shaver, representative
for the dealership. Together with
