Life of Cherry-Voorhees raised
nearly $67,000 for the American
Cancer Society through sponsors,
supporters and nearly 400 registered participants.
As event coordinators now
plan for the Relays return for the
second year, theyre hopeful they
can build off the success of 2015
and raise even more money in
2016 with even more participants.
Each year, the American Cancer Society coordinates more
than 5,000 Relay For Life events in
more than 20 countries to raise
funds to support cancer research
and help improve the life for cancer patients and caretakers.
The Relay name is reflected

HOPE Church readies for spring

At HOPE Church, the community is invited, free of charge, to a
number of seasonal events.
On Palm Sunday, on March
20 at 9 and 10:30 a.m., all are welcome to HOPEs Palm Sunday
worship services. Age-appropriate activities and worship experiences are available for children,
and the nursery will be open.
On Sunday, March 20, at 4:30
p.m., HOPEs Worship Arts Ministry will present Encounters
with Christ. From Palm Sunday
to Easter Sunday, Jesus goes from
being ushered in like a king to
being crucified like a criminal
and then ultimately overcoming
the grave. Take a look at some of
the people who were close to
Jesus as they recount the events
of that final week. Child care is
provided.
The Good Friday Experience at HOPE on March 25 from

7:30
p.m.
This is a self-guided, journal-driven, multi-sensory, meditative experience. Participants will move
through seven stations, each a re-

flection on the seven times Jesus

spoke while he was dying on the
cross. There will be opportunities
to reflect on what Jesus said and
did, through prayer, meditation
and various creative expressions.
Childcare is provided.
Easter Sunday Worship on
March 27 at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m.
This years celebration begins
with an Easter Sunrise Service,
March 27, at Lions Lake Park, located off Route 73 in Voorhees.
Service starts at 6:30 a.m., weather permitting. Be sure to bring a
chair. HOPEs Easter Sunday
services will then be held at the
church. Visitors are expected.
The Kidz Konnect worship experience, designed especially for
children, will be held during the
9:30 and 11 a.m. services. Nursery

A dog, a microchip and a reunion

VAO helps return New York dog stolen two years ago

Reuniting lost pets with their

owners is nothing new for the
Voorhees Animal Orphanage.
This story, however, ends with a
chance surrender that led the
VAO to facilitate an extraordi-

nary reunion more than 100 miles

away, finally resolving a stolen
dog report issued two years prior
in the Bronx, and demonstrating
the immeasurable value of microchipping pets.
Rihanna, a unique white boxer
mix, was stolen from her home
two years ago, and after reporting
the incident, her owners never
gave up hope.
Yet they were astonished and
incredibly emotional to receive a
phone call from Laurie Ballard,
VAO kennel manager, saying she
had their beloved Rihanna safe in
her carein a different state.
This dog's journey has been one
for the record books, and all the
pieces may never be known.
After two VAO employees
drove Rihanna on her homeward
bound ride this weekend, it can
now be said the happy ending her
owners may have been beginning
to doubt has indeed come.
Rihanna came to the VAO re-

cently after being found in one of

the 15 Camden County municipalities the VAO serves. A scan of
the newly arrived dog's microchip yielded a New York address.
Usually, when a chip shows in
another state, it means the owners never updated it when they
moved, or the animal has new
owners who never registered
their information.
Yet when Ballard called the
phone number registered to the
microchip, the scale of events
began to unfold. A stolen dog reported two years ago, the case still
active and unresolved. This is an
incredible situation where the
microchip details, having remained current, led a stolen dog
back to her owners.

Hello, spring, are you here yet?

Our moods, our businesses, our livelihoods depend on your arrival
arch 20. Eleven more days. It
cant come soon enough. Officially, thats the start of
spring. Whether Mother Nature
agrees, though, is anyones guess at
this point. Early forecasts show she
will be good to us, but how much can
we actually rely on forecasts?
Spring is what we all need. We need
a nice stroll downtown, in the park or
on the boardwalk to reinvigorate us, to
get us out of the doldrum into which
winter plunges us every year, no matter how mild or extreme is.
We got lucky this winter, with just
one major snowstorm that crippled us
for a week or so. Its been bitter cold at
times, too, as any winter is, and we got
a sprinkling of wet weather last week.

Your thoughts
What are you most looking forward to this
spring? While you are out and about
enjoying what hopefully will be beautiful
weather, send us the photos you take
along the way, and well be happy to share
them with the rest of the town.

But, hey, its in the 70s this week!

No matter how bad it is, winter affects all of our moods, and it affects
our bottom lines, too.
Well most likely be paying more in
taxes, in some way, at some level, for
pothole repairs and salt purchases.
Snow and cold weather affects local
businesses as well, especially retail
shops. Bad weather keeps patrons in-

side. The arrival of spring weather on

a consistent basis will hopefully turn
that around, and quickly.
Cold weather keeps people in the
mindset of no end in sight, and prevents many from taking day trips to
our states wonderful good-weather
spots, or from planning future trips, as
well.
In a little more than 60 days, the official start of the summer beach season
will be here. Does that even sound
right?
The good news is that it started to
warm up this week. Spring really does
look like its right around the corner.
Lets hope Mother Nature cooperates
and doesnt reverse the tide back to
winter. Please spare us!

Spring clocks forward and enjoy Voorhees parks

Daylight saving time returns on Sunday,
March 13 and right behind it is the arrival
of spring, which offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and our
Voorhees park system.
Connolly Park, located on Centennial
Boulevard, is a 49-acre oasis. Acquired by
the township in 2001, it contains two dog
runs, one for large dogs and one for small
dogs, a half-mile walking and jogging track
with lights, a large grass field for multisport usage, a cricket pitch with synthetic
turf, an open-air picnic pavilion and a comfort station with restrooms. In 2010, a playground with new picnic tables was added
next to the tot-lot continues to be very popular with children. Last year, with funding
from a county grant, workout stations were
added along the walking track. Connolly
Park is also the home of our Summer Concert Series and Halloween in the Park.
Lions Lake Park is located on Dutchtown Road off of Route 73. Our community banquet facility can accommodate up to

Kirkwood Park, located along Laurel

Oak Road behind the Hampton Inn, has a

lighted softball field, paved walking path, a
full basketball court, two tennis courts, a
childrens playground, a multi-purpose
field, two bocce ball courts and restrooms.
The walking path, basketball court and
tennis courts were recently resurfaced
through grants received from both the
state and Camden County. The township
also permanently preserved the adjacent
14-acre Kirkwood Forest, enhancing and
ensuring the beauty of this natural setting.
The Maiaroto Sports Complex, located
on Echelon Road, is home to the Voorhees
Soccer Association and host to the Annual
Memorial Day Soccer Tournament, one of
the largest in the country. The complex includes seven fields with recently improved
lights. It also offers two tennis courts and
basketball courts which were recently
resurfaced with a county grant, as well as a

Relay event will have longer hours this year

vivors, caregivers and anyone
else affected by the disease who
all come together to continuously
walk laps around a track to symbolize how fighting cancer is similar to a relay race where everyone has a part to play.
During the Relay events, participants and their team members usually set up miniature
campsites where they can relax,
get to know the other teams,
enjoy food, play music and even
sell items or snacks to raise more
money for the ACS.
Ryan Legato, a member of the
Cherry Hill-Voorhees Relay leadership team, described Relay
events as ways to bring members
of the community together for a
fun event while also shining a
spotlight on the fight against all
forms of cancer.
There are a lot of people who
dont get to experience a walk for
just their type of cancer and so
this is for them, Legato said.
Leadership team member and
cancer survivor Jeanette Golden,
who was one of the main
founders of the Voorhees Relay
several years ago before the event
also covered Cherry Hill, said she
has been participating in Relay
For Life for nearly 20 years.
Now that the Cherry HillVoorhees event is more established, this year Golden said she
hoped to get more kids and students involved with the cause, especially those who have family
members who were affected by
cancer.
These kids need an outlet and
this is a great outlet for them to
feel like theyre doing something

these kids just want so badly to

make a difference in the lives of
people with cancer, Golden said.
Legato also agreed that Relay
was a great way for kids to feel
more empowered in the fight
against cancer.
Pretty much everybody has
someone in their life, either a relative or a friend or a friends relative that has been affected, so really its everyones problem,
which makes it a worthwhile
cause, Legato said.
Changes to this years Relay include a move to new location at
Beck Middle School in Cherry
Hill, and the event will also take
place about one month earlier, on
May 21, to provide for cooler temperatures.
The event will also have slight-

ly longer hours than last year,

with this years Relay set to last
from 2 to 11 p.m.
For those who have never participated in Relay before, Golden
said the fundraising and effort is
well worth it.
Ive gotten way more than Ive
given, so the more you give of
yourself in any position, the
more you get in return, Golden
said.

Stafford Woods is our largest
piece of preserved land. The 140acre parcel includes a one-mile
walking path that follows an old
stagecoach trail through the
woods. The township also purchased the 5.5 acre parcel of land
adjacent to Stafford Farm to be
preserved as open space. A disc
golf course was constructed and
is accessible from Evesham Road.
In 2012, the Stafford Woods Disc
Golf Course was named one of
the 50 best courses in the country.

West End Avenue in the Ashland

the Township.
The Voorhees Environmental
Park is a 36-acre parcel located on
Centennial Boulevard. The township partnered with Rutgers University Department of Landscape
Architecture and the Voorhees
Environmental and Cultural Education Foundation to develop a
plan for the future development of
the park.
The township maintains neighborhood playgrounds on Round
Hill Road in the Green Ridge
neighborhood, Elliot Playground
on Elliot Drive in the Beagle Club,
Sandpiper Playground on Willowbrook Way in the Avian Section
and Cornell Drive Playground in
Lake Villa.
New playground
equipment was installed in the
Green Ridge and Sandpiper playgrounds in 2012, and last year
swing sets were added to both of
those playgrounds. Voorhees also
maintains two half-court basketball courts at the Sheppard Road
Basketball Park located off of
Centennial Blvd.
The Township Committee will
continue to work to improve our
park system. All of our parks are
maintained without the use of
pesticides.

The Voorhees Breakfast Rotary Club will present the 2016
Spring Egg Hunt on Saturday,
March 19 at Lions Lake Park, 101
Dutchtown Road. The event will
be from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The
rain date is Sunday, April 3. Attractions include 4,000 eggs,
music, games, face painting and a
visit from everyones favorite
bunny. The event is free and open
to the public. The Voorhees
Breakfast Rotary Club meets
every Thursday morning at 7:15
a.m. at Short Hills Restaurant
and Deli at 486 Evesham Road in

GVAA Vikings Youth Football
and Cheerleading, as well as
Voorhees Lacrosse Inc., use the
Giangiulio Recreation Complex
along Victor Boulevard. There is
a lighted athletic field with synthetic turf. The field can be used
year round by our youth football,
cheerleading, lacrosse and soccer
