Executive Summary
JWD Consulting is a leading provider of IT project management services. The CEO of JWD, Joe
Fleming wants JWD to have a highly sophisticated project management process for internal
project. He believes this can be possible through implementation of intranet sites to facilitate
better Knowledge Management within the organization. The current practice of not documenting
the problem solutions and best practices within JWD is causing inefficiency within JWD and are
in turn also affecting their clients.
The report suggests three options which JWD can undertake in the current situation. These
options have been arrived at by considering some assumptions. The report also JWD to
develop the intranet sites in-house using existing capabilities of the firm, and also presents a
rough budget estimate for the same.
Background
JWD Consulting is a provider of IT project management services to its clients. It helps its clients
measure the performance and benefits of projects by developing robust metrics. The USP of
JWD is its strong collaboration with its clients along with their effective metrics.
Business Objective
JWDs goal is to become a world-class project consulting company. The CEO of JWD, Joe
Fleming believes in leading by example. Since JWD helps its clients manage projects, Joe
believed it was paramount for JWD to have an impeccable project management process for
internal projects. Creating intranet sites for Knowledge Management will help fulfil this goal by
allowing JWDs employees to share their expertise with internal as well as external
stakeholders.
Problem Statement
JWD initially started with a small group of consultants, which allowed for easy knowledge
sharing between them. However, now the company has grown to 200+ consultants who work on
different projects. These projects are often carried out in silos which limits the sharing of
information between projects. Thus, problem solutions and best practices are not documented
and shared between the different project groups. This leads to redundancy, which leads to
inefficiency, lower productivity and more errors not only within JWD, but also within its
customers.
Assumptions/Constraints

The sites content will be regularly updated by all consultants

Clients will be willing and able to access the intranet sites
This project will be completed within the stipulated time (6 months) and budget
($750000)
Sufficient security protocols will be in place to protect the sites from unauthorised access

Options
There are three options with JWD
1. Do nothing - The core business of JWD is to provide quality IT Consulting services to
assist organizations in their business. Adding intranet applications may divert certain
resources which may hamper JWDs performance in its core offering.
2. Outsource - The development of the intranet applications can be outsourced to a third
party vendor that specializes in application development. This will bring in a specialized
expertise.
3. Develop the intranet websites in-house - The internal capabilities of the firm can be
used to create applications by interacting with all the stakeholders. There is a minimal
risk of information leakage.
Proposed Solution
Option 3 is the most viable solution - Develop the intranet websites in-house, using existing
capabilities of the firm. This is because, this option allows JWD to interact with the clients
directly and include their suggestions in application development. This will help build
relationships and achieve an augmented collaboration. This enhances JWDs competitive edge
in business and may result in winning more business in the future. Also, since the internal
problems of the firm are best understood by the people within the firm, an in-house development
will save more time when compared to the Outsource option(where the requirements will have
to be transferred and extra rounds of testing will have to be included).
Budget Estimate
The proposed solution will require a time period of 6 months and a preliminary budget estimate
reveals a cost of $750000. This includes employee compensation, hardware and software
requirements as well as annual maintenance costs.
