Subject:

O-rings with improved heat-resistance

for screw compressors

Fig. 1

As a step in the ongoing development of the shaft seals for screw compressors, the
O-rings to be used in future are made from a different elastomer material. The new
HNBR type is more heat-resistant than the CR type material used so far.
Particularly the O-rings mounted at the shaft seal seat ring are exposed to high
temperatures generated by the frictional heat from the sliding surface. The heat makes
the CR material hard and inelastic. This has particularly been noticed on the S80 screw
compressors, which have ceramic sliding surfaces known to generate more frictional
heat.
The new HNBR elastomer material is suited for use with all common refrigerants and it
further has the advantage that it does not shrink when affected by PAO and AP
refrigerant oils, which was a considerable disadvantage of the CR material.

Technical Information TI2004/07

The HNBRmaterial is black and the O-rings are therefore not visibly different from the
CR O-rings.
As a general rule it is not recommended to change O-rings only on the shaft seals but
rather to change the complete shaft seal in the event of abnormal leakage.
List of changes
New shaft seals with HNBR material O-rings mounted in the seat ring as well as in the
bellows part will be on all new compressors from the list below.
Shaft seals with the new O-rings are available on the following part numbers:

Shaft seals with the new O-rings can be identified by the production code according to
the description below. The production code is engraved in the rotating part of the shaft
seal.
Index 1
If date is indicated as 03/49 (year/week, normal indication) or later, the shaft seal is with
the new O-rings.
If the shaft seal is marked with an earlier date but followed by an H, the shaft seals are
also mounted with the new O-rings.
Early deliveries of shaft seals may be marked with a date such as 12/03 (month/year,
not the normal indication). These shaft seals are also mounted with new O-rings.

If date is indicated as 03/49 (year/week) or later, the shaft seal is mounted with the new
O-rings.

If date is indicated as 04/04 (year/week) or later, the shaft seal is mounted with the new
O-rings.

In addition to the introduction of the new O-rings, the following changes have been
made to the shaft seals for S85, S87 and S89 compressors:
S

Narrowed tolerance on the inner diameter of the shaft seal

Reduced outer diameter against the labyrinth

Technical Information TI2004/07

Double O-ring in the bellows part against the shaft

Increased collar diameter (S89 only)

Increased number of set screws (from 3 to 6 screws)

Shaft seals with the above mentioned changes (incl. new O-rings) are characterized by
an R2 marked after the part number on the bellows part.
Shaft seals with new type of O-ring used as spare parts are available for the following
compressors:

The shaft seal is not provided with an engraved production code. In this design there is
an O-ring at the seat only.
