Dear friends,
I recently heard an NPR news report about Al-
berto Arroyo, who died last month at the age of 94.
Since 1937, Arroyo could be seen every day at the
famous Central Park Reservoir running track in New
York City. He claimed to be the first person to jog
around the reservoir, even before the running track
was built.
After Arroyo retired, he would often spend the
entire day at the running track, waving and saying
hello to everyone. According to the news report,
“when he couldn’t run, he walked. Then he used a
cane, then a walker, and finally, after a stroke, a
wheelchair.” Everyday, even in unpleasant weather,
he was there.
Last week, the running track was dedicated to
Arroyo, and some 150 people gathered for the cere-

Listening to that story, I couldn’t help but think
about many of the people in our congregation. I’m
not talking about those who sing in the choir or chair
committees. They are important and essential, yes;
but what this news story made me think of are all
those who play a role that is a step or two outside the
spotlight: the ones who greet worshipers with a smile
before worship, or who send cards to those who are
ill, or who simply pray every day for our ministry.
Like the person quoted in the news report, I won-
der if they know just what a positive thing they are
in the life of our congregation. I wonder if they know
how much they will be missed when they are no
longer around.
If you are one of those people, then I extend to
you my gratitude. We would not be the congregation

Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of the Pacific
Southwest Regional Assembly on October 22,
2010. Plan now to attend the anniversary cele-
bration. You can never plan too far in advance.

I have only heard from three people (James, An-
gela, Rob) who wanted to play on the team, four
(Ken, Phil Buchman, Sonya, Alvin) who said they
could not play, and the rest silence. Based on this
I did not sign up for a team in the CAA Summer
2010 softball league. It may be possible that we
will be able to combine with other churches who
do not have enough players, or a couple who have
too many, in order to have a team.
Please confirm or reconfirm if you want to be on
the team. Lack of response mean not inter-
ested. I will let you know the status of putting a
team together before April 24.

Bixby Knolls Christian Church is in the
process of planning some fun and exciting
events for the summer, including the return
of our Evenings on the Patio, Vacation Bible
School, movie nights, and our annual church
picnic. This year we hope to make a special
effort to invite our neighbors to these
events, thus making our community stronger
and thereby living into our identity of a move-
ment for wholeness in a fragmented world.
In order for these events to be suc-
cessful, we need your help! Are you able to
help with food preparation? Can you deliver
flyers to our neighbors, letting them know
what’s planned? If you are able to help in any
way, please let Pastor Danny know today.
