This study presents an assessment of total Weight & Value estimates of the Air India cargo
industry and its share. Findings presented in the study have been derived by means of a
comprehensive research conducted covering both secondary as well as primary sources in the
spheres of Domestic freight, International freight and freight forwarders & agents.
Both segments of Indian air cargo industry in India, Domestic Cargo & International Cargo
have been covered. Mumbai and Delhi are the busiest ports with Mumbai Delhi being the
most important sector. It is estimated that the growth in the international sector will continue
in the coming years at an estimated growth rate of around 4.5% on a year to year basis over
the next five years. Air India has around 7% total market share.
The Air India Cargo in the Indian market has seen unprecedented growth in the last decade.
This significant growth over the last few years is expected to continue over the next decade.
This makes it interesting to study. We have studied the facts in terms of all secondary data
available and also talked with industry experts. This is a report we present from this study.
Introduction
Air India Cargo was a cargo airline, it was the freight carrying subsidiary of Air India, based
in Mumbai. It operated freighter aircraft services off and on at different stages of its history,
the latest being from 2006 to 2012. Although the company has stopped operating as an airline
it continues to manage the belly cargo hold capacity of Air India's passenger fleet.
Air India Cargo was founded in 1954 and ceased its operationsin 2012. Some important hubs
were as below
Air India ltd was the parent company and its headqaurters was situated in Mumbai.
History
Air India Cargo was set up in 1954, and started its freighter operations with a Douglas DC3 aircraft, giving Air India the distinction of being the first Asian airline to operate freighters.
Between the 1980s and 1990s it operated Boeing 747 and Douglas DC-8 freighter aircraft on
various international routes through other companies.
In 2006 the airline relaunched freighter services following the merger of Indian Airlines and
its domestic subsidiary Alliance Air with Air India; which led to the acquisition of a
single Boeing 737-200C aircraft from Alliance's fleet, plus ten additional passenger versions
of the aircraft, of five were converted to freighters. One of these was also painted in Indian
Airlines' old livery for a brief period after conversion. All six aircraft were flying on Air India
Cargo domestic routes.
Air India also converted four of its Airbus A310-300s into freighters, these were deployed on
the Dammam-Frankfurt route. After ending international operations two were leased out to
new cargo startup Aryan Cargo Express, while a third was sold to an African company.
In November 2007, Air India partnered with GATI, a leader and pioneer in express
distribution and supply chain solutions for a dedicated freighter service using the 737s.
With rising competition from local cargo airlines as well as financial issues, Air India Cargo
ended freighter aircraft operations in early 2012.
Air India Cargo served the following cities with freighter aircraft until January 2012; it also
had ground truck-transportation arrangements on select destinations.

Cargo Operation
Today, Air Indias modern fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft carries just about everything.
Thats why when we think of transporting goods in and out of India, Air India is logical
choice. An option with lakhs of corporate and international enterprises have made. We have
the infrastructure and the network to ensure smooth transportation and delivery of cargo.
Air Indias cargo operations give us a capacity advantage over a network combined with 58
domestic and 29 international stations.
Internationally Air India has tied up with various foreign airlines and trucking companies.
This enables them to carry cargo between any two points on the globe we can think of.
To support their cargo operations, they have a highly skilled and experienced team of
professionals backed by their Training division of international repute to constantly upgrade
skills of our personnel.
They use the latest state-of-the-art technology for cargo activities called Logistic
Management System (LMS) for cargo sales and handling functions of import and export. The
LMS system supports EDI interface with Indian Customs. The movement of the cargo can be
tracked through LMS.
Cargo Types
Air India's Cargo operation flies everything to just about anywhere. Not very surprising,
when we consider how far and wide Indians have settled. Vast population have settled in the
Gulf, the US, UK, Africa, Far East and Australia. It is to enable them to maintain links with
their friends and families back home, and to let entrepreneurs conveniently go about their
business, that Air India has fine tuned its cargo services to their needs.
As an active member of IATA, Air India carries all types of cargo including dangerous goods
(hazardous materials) and live animals, provided such shipments are tendered according to
IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and IATA Live Animals Regulations respectively.
Here are some of the items transported by Air India over its domestic and international routes.

Conclusion
Though the Passenger revenue constitute major share in Air India revenue stream, Air India
cargo revenue is growing at consistent rate. Cargo and freight have 5.4% of total share in
revenue where as mail and exchange revenue constitute around 0.4% share in total revenue.
Low oil prices and better yields than the passenger segment make the cargo sector an
attractive business. But Indias infrastructure needs to improve, says Venky Sanjeeva, Senior
Director & Head, Transportation, Unisys India.
Air Indias experience in cargo industry has not been pleasant. The comapany didnt succeed
in the cargo space. There is demand in the Indian
infrastructure, policies, processes that enable it, needs to improve. And we know that the
government has tried to set it right. There is a cargo promotion board that is being set up. It
will help frame policies to improve cargo. But the supply chain is long. There are multiple
agencies, custom operators, forwarders and airlines. It is a long chain. It is the technology
that needs to be leveraged to bring efficiency. Infrastructure is the largest challenge in the
Indian context for building cargo. Air India need systems that enable management of cargo
electronically. There is a huge cost to loading papers and to seek approval to move a piece of
cargo. Using paper is highly inefficient.
There is a quantum shift from five years ago. Many initiatives are being taken globally in
air cargo industry. One of them is the e-trade initiative pursued by airlines worldwide. It
helps airlines completely eliminate paper. There are carriers in North America who are
implementing e-trade. This will help a newbie to take advantage of the efficiencies in the
supply chain through technology and establish its business on a stronger footing. Air India
should take advantage of these new developements as early as possible to be aquire
predominent share in cargo market.
Again there are other emerging technologies in this sector that Air India shoul take advantage
of. There are tracking mechanisms through RFID (radio frequency identification) that allows
airlines and other constituents of the entire supply chain to track their cargo accurately.
Earlier, if there was a consolidated piece of cargo with 10 pieces, five in orgin and five in
transit, you wouldnt know which five is where. Through RFID you would know that. These
types of technologies are very important to improve efficiency.
Another advantage of RFID is that today a lot of input of data is done manually. Again RFID
cal allow Air India in its warehouse to capture that without manually doing it. This helps in
increasing speed and accuracy. Earlier, airport authorities wouldnt allow certain frequencies
of RFID to be used. Some of them have been solved due to technology. The ability to use
RFID is no longer a challenge. Now passengers will be able to put RFID tags on their bags.
Also, earlier cost of a RFID chip was high. It is now within a level that is acceptable to the
industry.
In the Air Indias context, this is very important given the congestion in its cargo terminal. In
Mumbai, a shipment comes from Europe in 10-11 hours and it could take another 12 hours to
