1. 16.A.3b Make inferences about historical events and eras using historical sources.
2. 16.A.4a Analyze and report historical evens to determine cause-and-effect relationships.
Procedure
1. Using a PowerPoint, present background information on Fredrick Douglass and the context of
this life during and after servitude. Also present information on the education/ prevention of
education of slaves in America.
2. Using excerpts from the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, have
students complete a DBQ. Students may also use any other primary sources already discussed
in previous classes.
3. Provide students with about 40 minutes to complete the DBQ, and collect them at the end of the
period.
4. Assess the students' DBQ's on their ability to construct an argument and support their argument
with relevant and meaningful information.
