FROM THE DIRECTOR

We begin our Focus Groups in March and look
forward to what you, the people, have to say about
future library services. If you have been contacted and
have agreed to participate in one of our focus groups,
we look forward in welcoming you and being a part of
this exciting time. Our Friends of the Library are
graciously preparing refreshments for these groups.
Were also getting ready for our Spring Break
Childrens Programs, March 29 through April 2d.
Well have educational programs, such as a program
on the constellations, the art of keeping bees, a petting
Zoo, and well have a paper airplane making contest.
Other programs during the month include free art
classes to inspire us to discover the artist within us
held every other Saturday at 10:00. We hope the
children in our community have an enjoyable and safe
spring vacation. We strive to give our young people a
safe place to go when theyre out of school. These
great programs are made possible by our Friends of the
Library group who work hard to help make our Library
a special place to visit.
On January 25, 2016 we said good bye to a dear
friend. Henry Jenkins was a kind, gentle man who was
also a giant in our community. I loved to hear him
laugh as it revealed his happy soul. He lived to be 92
years young, always doing good for his adopted
community, Ozark. We were all blessed to have
known him and to have been a part of his life. We will
long remember him.

The Friends of the Library (FOL) has started its
new year seeking to sign new members and renew
current memberships. The membership drive is off to
a good start. My goal as the new FOL president is to
not only grow the membership, but to seek out citizens
of our city and county who have never participated in
the Friends of the Library.
The library consulting firm Library Max has been
contracted by the library's Board of Directors to
conduct a community analysis of what is wanted in our
library. The Friends of the Library have volunteered to
provide light refreshments to each of the seven focus
groups that will be interviewed by the Library Max at
the end of March. We need our members to attend our

next meeting to be held on March 9th. It is at this meeting that we will plan the refreshments for the focus
group meetings.
As we see the end of winter coming, the Friends of
the Library are already planning for our much anticipated Spring Book, Plant, and Bake Sale. This year the
sale will be held on Saturday, April 2nd from 9 AM till
12 Noon. We welcome all donated baked goods. These
should be delivered on Friday, April 1st or before 9 AM
on Saturday the 2nd.
Later in April the Friends of the Library will hold a
luncheon to honor the volunteers who help the Friends
of the Library in its mission to support the Ozark-Dale
County Library. We also want to honor other volunteers
who help by donating their time and talents to our library.
The Creel Richardson-Val McGee Room
Of this library
By Jocelyn Horlacher Ross-Rayford

At the back of the East Wings Nonfiction Section of

this library are a series of rooms known as the Creel
Richardson-Val McGee Rooms that contain shelves and
file cabinets full of material about Dale County, its
history and people. Also, there are history books about
other states and their many families. It is a delight for
those interested in genealogy and history, so much
so, that people come from Alaska and Hawaii to these
rooms for the local history found here.
Somewhat unique among local genealogy and
history rooms are these rooms arrangements. Except
for the Genealogist/Reference Librarians office, anyone
is welcome to enter these rooms, to pull out filing
drawers, and to remove files and materials for their
perusal. However, nothing is allowed to be removed
from the room except a copy of the material found
here. There is a copy machine available, while many
researchers use their phones to record their
findings. Each copy made at this library is 20 cents, to
be paid at the Circulation Desk before leaving the
library.
Two computers are available upon request: one for
researching Ancestry.com, the other has digitized issues
of the Southern Star from 1867 to 2008. Use of these
computers is free, but copies cost $.20 page. Assistance
is provided for any person unfamiliar with these
programs.

many colleges in Alabama. Another delight is the
collection of DVDs of the Dale County Genealogical
& Historical Society meetings that have been recorded each month since 1999. These DVDs can be
checked out and taken home with the permission of
the Genealogy/Reference staff member, Mrs. Jocelyn Rayford. She is also the Reference Librarian
that is on duty to assist any person needing to find
materials, information, or assistance.
All persons are welcome to come into this room
between the hours of 11 a.m. -7 p.m., Tues.-Thurs.
and 10-5 p.m. Fri.-Sat. Children are welcome, if
accompanied by an adult. Because the Genealogy
Room staff person, Mrs. Rayford is also the Reference Librarian, she is sometimes helping others find
materials elsewhere in the library, upon request. Any
library patron is welcome to enter the room, record
name at the entry desk and research until the
Librarian returns to the room. If she knows your
specific interest, she may be able to guide you to
very relevant sources. Many people enjoy their
visits to these rooms, especially reading the
Southern Stars from 1933 to 2014. All are invited!
