Living history: Tuskegee Airmen pilot visits school

Dr. Eugene Richardson spoke at Harrington Middle School after students researched airmens role
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Students at Harrington Middle
School were flying high on March
8 when they got a chance to meet
former Tuskegee Airmen pilot
Dr. Eugene Richardson.
Thanks to a donation from the
Mt. Laurel Public Education
Fund, Richardson spent the
morning at Harrington speaking
about his life as one of the
Tuskegee Airmen with a group of
students who had researched the
airmen and their role as the first
African-American military aviators in the U.S. armed forces.
The former pilot touched on a
broad range of topics, from discrimination the airmen faced to
the planes they flew, to their accomplishments during the war, to
the growing roles African-Americans and women had over time in
the field of aviation and the
armed forces.
In addition to the history lessons, Richardson used his own
life as an example when he told
the students anything was possible as long they had three words
that each started with the letter
D.
You need a dream, you need a
desire to make that dream real,
and you need the discipline to
make yourself stay on track to do

what you need to do to make your
dream real, Richardson said.
To that point, Richardsons
own dream of flying predates the

creation of the Tuskegee Airmen

to the 1930s when he was still a
child living in Ohio.
There Richardson first saw the

Colored Air Circus, an airshow

performed with all African-American pilots, and it was then
Richardson found his dream of

taking to the skies above.

In 1944 when Richardson
turned 18, he went for pilot training at the Tuskegee Army Air
Field, which he successfully completed in March of the next year.
However, Richardson was
never deployed due to the end of
the war later that spring, and he
was discharged in 1946.
As positions for black aviators
were still nearly nonexistent at
that time, Richardson instead
chose to pursue a career in education through the Philadelphia
school system.
To this day, Richardson still
has that love of education, as he
regularly visits area schools to
share the history of the Tuskegee
Airmen.
When one Harrington student
questioned Richardson on his
feelings about the historical impact the Tuskegee Airmen,
Richardson said at the time of the
war he had no way of knowing
the airmen would eventually factor so greatly into President
Harry Trumans decision to desegregate the nations armed
forces in 1948.
We just did the best we could
for ourselves and for social relations, Richardson said.

in our opinion

Lets encourage reading all year

National Read Across America aims to turn our children into life-long readers
chools throughout the area recently celebrated National Read
Across America, an annual motivation and awareness day encouraging children to read. While the National Education Association marks the
event on March 2 the birthday of
beloved childrens author Dr. Seuss
many schools turn the reading celebration into a week-long affair.
National Read Across America,
however, goes far beyond March. The
overarching purpose is to create lifelong successful readers. And its our
job to help this purpose come to
fruition.
Start young. Read to your children
every day. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 26 percent of

Your thoughts
How do you encourage reading in your
children? What are the best ways to make
reading fun? Who are some of your kids
favorite authors? We would love to hear
from you and share your answers.

children who were read to three or

four times in the last week by a family
member recognized all letters of the
alphabet. Children who are read to frequently also are more likely to count
to 20 (or higher), write their own name
and read (or pretend to read).
Fill your home with books and magazines. Give your children endless options. The Educational Testing Service
says that the more types of reading
materials there are in the home, the

higher students are in reading proficiency.

Perhaps most importantly, make
reading fun. The U.S. Department of
Education has found that the percentage of high school seniors who read
for fun is in decline, however the
more students read for fun on their
own time, the higher their reading
scores. Instill this lesson from the beginning. Reading is not work; reading
is fun.
And dont forget to be a good reading role model. Pick up a book for
yourself, too. A child who sees their
parents reading will be more inclined
to read on their own, too.
Lets help create a generation of lifelong readers.

Council introduces budget with no tax increase

Public hearing and potential final adoption of budget scheduled for April 11
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Mt. Laurel residents will see their municipal tax bill stay flat if the township
sticks to the 2016 municipal budget introduced at township councils March 7 meeting.
According to township manager Maureen Mitchell, this years budget totals
about $38 million but currently does not require a tax increase to reach that figure.
Mitchell noted that the township was
able to avoid a tax increase in the proposed
budget despite recently facing a $26 million
reduction in ratables stemming from a
number of tax appeals, from mostly commercial properties, in the township due to
the property revaluation process the township underwent several years ago.
Weve been able to keep everything
down and restructure our spending in

order to make a zero increase, Mitchell

said.
Mayor Linda Bobo also noted that when
looking at a residents total annual tax bill,
only about 12 percent of those funds go toward the municipality.
Bobo outlined all the services those
funds cover, including police, animal control services, emergency medical services,
the office of emergency management,
trash removal and disposal, snow removal,
township administration, public works,
community services and open space maintenance, township events and more.
Were actually such a small sliver of
the pie chart compared to the other taxing
entities, Bobo said.
A public hearing and potential final
adoption of the budget is scheduled for
councils April 11 meeting at 7 p.m.
At that time, Mitchell said she would
also give a more in-depth presentation of

the final budget, and members of the public would be able to comment.
In other news:
Council approved a resolution accepting a grant from the state attorney
generals office to help offset the cost of the
Mt. Laurel Police Department outfitting its
officers with body cameras.
At councils previous meeting on Feb. 22,
Mt. Laurel Police Chief Dennis Cribben
outlined his hopes for the program, which
he said would allow every officer working
in a patrol capacity to have a camera on
their person during their shift.
At that meeting, Cribben stated his belief that the cameras would hold Mt. Laurel officers to higher standards of accountability while also helping expedite false allegations against officers.

MARCH 1622, 2016 THE MT. LAUREL SUN 13

LRHSD Give to Goodwill kicks off

Game on. The Lenape Regional
High School Districts fifth annual Give to Goodwill clothing
drive competition kicked off on
Monday, March 7 and runs
through Friday, April 15.
During this six-week drive, students, faculty, family and friends
at all four district high schools
will be on a quest to see which
school can collect the most
pounds of donations per student.
Cherokee is the reigning champ,
having captured first place in the
last four Give to Goodwill Clothing Drive Competitions.
This Give to Goodwill community service project was organized
by students and faculty advisors
from each high school in partnership with Goodwill Industries of
Southern NJ and Philadelphia.
Proceeds from the sale of all donations collected fund Goodwills job
training programs and career
services that help local residents
with disabilities and disadvantages get to work.
Since its inception in 2012,

Lenape Regional High School District students have collected

165,760 pounds of donations for
Goodwill.
We are pleased to once again
partner with Goodwill in this
friendly competition between our
district high schools, said
Lenape Regional Superintendent
of Schools Dr. Carol Birnbohm.
This is a wonderful way for students to learn the importance of
recycling and supporting local
philanthropy.
The Give to Goodwill clothing
drive competition coincides with
the spring cleaning season. Goodwill donation containers will be
conveniently located in each
schools parking lot making for
easy access for students, staff and
families to donate gently-used
clothing, accessories, toys, books
and other small household items.
Once a container is full, a
Goodwill truck will empty it;
count the number of bags in it;
and then compute the number of
pounds of donations collected.

Donation results for each

school will be periodically posted
the
districts
website
on
(www.lrhsd.org) and on Goodwills Facebook page (www.facebook.com/GoodwillNJ).
The school that collects the
most donations (based on pounds
per student) will be crowned the
2016 champion and receive a
plaque to display at their school
until the 2017 competition begins.
In addition, the Volunteer Service Award recipient from each
school will be selected to receive a
$250 scholarship from Goodwill.
Collecting more than 100K
pounds of donations is incredibly
impactful on an organization like
Goodwill, said Goodwill president and CEO Mark B. Boyd. Donations are what fuel Goodwills
job training programs and career
services that help local residents
with disabilities and disadvantages get to work. These donations truly are changing lives for
the better through the power of
work.
