The Feasibility of Using Other Plant Parts

Introduction
a) Background of the study
Most of the times, we have problems regarding the scarcity
of our natural resources. Based on the study, 37 Billion trees
has been cut every year to pave way on making
paper/cardboard and other materials made up from trees.
This can lead to crisis if we didnt act now to save trees. But,
paper is already a need for us, we use it on our everyday
lives. On our school, it is obvious that we use paper, based
on the survey that we have made, an average student
consumes or wastes 2 pounds of paper every week. Also
cardboard is very needed in making activities, projects etc.,
but still, cardboards nowadays are scarce and rare. If this
continues, we can run out of paper/cardboard and go back
to ancient times, when we use clay tablets as substitute for
paper. This gave way to our goal to make an alternative way
of making cardboard, which can be a trigger in making
paper in other way. And also on our project, our main
purpose is to help our environment, so our substitute is very
cheap plant peelings! We know that we use fibers in
making cardboards. And fruit peelings are a good source of
fiber.

d) Significance of the Study
This project is very crucial because almost everyone can
benefit from it especially our environment. On top of the

Methodology
a) Procedure
Dry the banana (use saba for better hardness) peeling
under the sun with the fine mesh net as the floor to
cleanly dry our banana peelings (at least 8 hours).Boil
the banana peelings to at least 5 minutes, to enhance
the texture. Prepare the blender, water, gloves, and the
boiled banana peelings. Blend the banana peelings and
the water (ratio 1 unit of water: 4 units of banana).
Settle the mixture in the molder for drying. Then, check
the mixture if any impurities have been inside the
molder, remove it. Using a rolling pin, roll it to
smoothen.

a) Recommendations
We recommend that we should find or search for a
substance or chemical that will bind the fibers and
enhance the texture and appearance of our product.
We also recommend that we should improve the
process of making the product. To some groups who
may want to improve our project or to those who want
to make our project as a reference, they must find way
to improve our study and the way of making it. And we
also recommend trying other raw materials like the
banana.
b) Conclusions
We conclude that we somehow have flaws on our study
if we base it in a way that we compare the regular
cardboard on our product. But still we passed on our
goal to make a cardboard. We still need to improve it.
And also, we have proved that we can use banana
peelings on making cardboard. We just need more
research on substances and chemicals that can
improve our product.
