TACHOMETER INDICATOR OVERHAUL MANUAL
TYPE BDJ13l

4563K2B-700
B. The Type BDJl3l Tachometer Indicator is designed for helicopter use.

Operating in conjunction with three tachometer generators, it provides

visual indication of the gas generator speed of helicopter engines No. 1

and No. 2, and the speed of the helicopter rotor.

2. Description
A. The Type BOJl3l Tachometer Indicator is a hermetically-sealed unit

containing three elements that operate independently. Each element

consists of a synchronous motor. a magnetic coupling. and an indicating

mechanism. Three concentric pointers independently display rotational

speeds on a single graduated scale. For lighted mode1s. integral

1ighting of the sca1e and pointera is provided by f1ange-mounted 1amps.

A11 e1ectrica1 connections are made through one or three receptacles.

depending on the particular modelo

3. Princip1es of Operation
A. The three synchronous motors of the triple tachometer indicator are
driven separate1y by the 3-phaae supplies of the rotor and engine
tachometer generators, which are coupled to the rotor drive and the
engines. Frequencies of the supp1y voltages from the generators. which
vary direct1y with rotor and engine speeds. determine the speeds of the
synchronous indicator motors. Torques proportional to these speeds are
then app1ied through magnetic coup1ing to the indicating mechanisms. The
pointers attached to the indicating mechanisms indicate these speeds on
the ca1ibrated scale.
B. The synchronous motors are the self-starting, permanent-magnet type. The

indicating mechanisms are coupled to the synchronous motors through

magnetic couplings which permit slippage between the drives and the

indicating mechanisms. but transmit a torque proportional to motor

speed. Each indicating mechanism is spring-loaded against motor torque

and def1ects through an angle that ia proportiona1 to the monitored

speeds.

4. Leading Particu1ars
A. Leading particulars for the models covered in this manual are listed in

Table 2. When individual models are not 1isted. the information is the

same for a1l models.

(2) Assemble nuts (7) and the temperature compensator (5) in place with
nuts (6). Then, adjust temperature compensator position with nuts
(6, 7) so that the top surface of the temperature compensator is
0.069 to 0.075 inch from the top surface of the magnets.
NOTE: Final adjustment of the temperature compensator is made
during indicator calibration.
(3) Magnetize the magnet plate assembly (9) and the magnet assembly (2)
to saturation, using Magnetizer, Magnetizer Adapter, and Keeper
(Table 1001). Magnetize by first placing the Keeper against the
magnet assemblies, and then bringing the magnets to the pole pieces
of the Adapter. Magnetize magnets alternately north and soutn, so
that when the two magnet assemblies are assembled, opposite poles
will face each other.
NOTE: Keeper must be left in position until the two magnet
assemblies are assembled. Any separation of the magnet
assemblies withoutkeepers will cause instantaneous
knockdowns of the magnets, and require remagnetizing.
(4) Assemble magnet assembly (2) in place with nuts (4). Then, adjust
nuts (3, 4,) to provide a 0.045 to 0.050 inch air gap between the

the indicator is over-compensated at -31F
(-35C)(indication is low), move the compensator(s) away
from the air gap, or remove compensators. For tests at
+158F (+70C), reverse the adjustments.

~.:

3) Preferred compensation is obtained when the compensators

are located a maximum distance from the gap. Thus, when
0.4% (16 cpm) added compensation is needed, add one
compensator and one dummy 0.120 inch from the air gap, in
preference to sliding two compensators 0.076 inch toward
the gap.
CAUTION: NEVER PLACE !HE TEMPERATURE COMPENSATORS CLOSER
THAN 0.060 INCa FROM IRE AIR GAP.
4) When temperature compensator(s) have finally been
positioned, cement in place with glyptal (Tab1e 504)~
(3) Methods No. 2 and No. 3. The following simplified method$ of
temperature compensation are included for use where high acctiracy oE
indication at temperature extremes is not required or -31F (-35C)
and/or +158F. (+70C) temperature boxes are not available.
Indication accuracy at normal operating temperatures will not be
adversely affected and may be improved.
(a) For Method No. 2, operate the indicator at room temperature at
the speeds shown in Table 502. Read and record the indication
of each pointer.

(b) Place the indieator in a +104F (+40C) oven and operate as in

step (a) for 20 minutes. Read and record the indieationat the
end of the 20 minutes.
(e) Compare respective readings of steps (a) and (b). The reading
of step (b) sha11 not differ from step (a) reading by more than
O 2% ( 8 e pm)
(d) Make any neeessary eompensation adjustments aeeording to
paragraphs 2.(e) or 2.(f) above, depending on modelo Then,
repeat steps (a), (b) and (e) this paragraph.
NOTE: lt is preferab1e that any ehange in indieation at +104F
(+40C) be in the negative direetion, as this will tend
to eompensate for any slight position ehange in the zero
reading over a period of time.
(e) lf a +104F (+40C) oven is not avai1ab1e for step (b),
a1ternate Method No. 3 may be used by wrapping the indieator in
two 1ayers of a1uminum foil to reduce 10ss of heat.
(f) Place the indieator on a surfaee of low heat eonduetivity, such
as a wooden ''V'' block, and proeeed as in step (b) above.
NOTE: Self heat of the indieator will raise its internal
temperature as required for the +104F (+40Cr reading.
(g)

When temperature eompensator (Models 8DJ13lAAG, -AAJ, -LAE,

-LAF, -LAN, -LAV, -LAW, -LAZ, -LBA) has finally been
positioned, apply glypta1 to heads of adjusting nuts; when
temperature eompensator(s) (Models 8DJl3lAAT, -LBK, -LBT, -LAF,
and -AAG2) has finally been positioned, eement in place with
glyptal.

8. Calibration and Test (before Sealing)

A. Calibration Adjustments. Final ealibration adjustment is aeao~plished
through magnetie knoekdown, adjustment of magnet air gap. and balancQ ot
the indieating elements. Connect the indicatol:" as shown. in Figu.re 503,
and proeeed as follows:

(1)

Operate the indicator and adjust signal of element number one so

that the pointer number one indieation is 70%, then, observe the
readout. rf its magnet and shaft assembly is saturated, the tester
will read under the 70% CPM engine eolumn of table SOlA depending on
the modelo
Apply an AC magnetie field of suffieient strength to gradually
knoekdown the magnet and s~pft assembly so that the readout reading
is raised to those preeedlng values. rf the magnetic field produces .
excessive knockdown for the element number one, either remagnetization
of its magnet 'and shaft assembly or a new assembly is required.

dependent on modelo
(a)

Adjust the indicator as accurately as possible at this ~oint by

adjusting the air gap so that the indicator reads 100~ indication.
Distance between the disk and hub assembly and the magnets in the
air gap should never be less than 0.010 inch.

NOTE: If the indicator cannot be adjusted at this point, the

individual magnet and shaft assemblies should be
remagnetized, and the indicator recalibrated.
(5) Check balance by scanning calibration at points of approximately

120, 100, 80, 60, 40, and 20'%.. This will quickly locate, by the
degree of calibration error, areas affected by unbalance of the
indicating mechanism.

C. Tests (Before Sealing)
(1)

Connect the indicator as shown in Figure 503, and perform the

following tests.

(2)

Scale Error. Take tapped readings for both increasing and

decreasing speeds at tne calibration points indicated in Table 503.
Accuracy at each scale point should fall within the tolerance
specified.
NOTE: For increasing speeds, bring the speed up to but not in
excess of the desired speed. For decreasing speeds, the
speed should be brought down to but not below the desired
speed.

(3)

Friction Error. Operate the indicator at the speeds specified in

Table 503, and note the indication before and after tapping. No
reading should be taken until the pointer comes to resto The
friction values (differencebetween tapped, and untapped readings)

shall be as specified in Table 503.

(4)

Pointer Oscillation. Check oscillation (total excursion of

pointer). Maximum allowable oscillation should be within the limits
noted in Table 503.

(5)

Position error. Operate the indicator at 100% indication in normal

(sca1e p1ate vertical) position, and note reading. ~en note
readings when indicator is rotated 45 degrees to left and right of
normal position, and tilted 4S degrees forward or backward from
normal position. Readings should not differ more than 0.3% (13 cpm)
for Mode1s 8DJ131AAG, -AAJ, -AAT, -LAE. -LAF. -LAN, -LAV. -LAW.
-LBA, -LBK, -LBT and 0.4% (17 cpm) for Mode1 8DJ131LAZ from the
normal position reading.

~:

The slew rate during the pointer interaction test shall not
exceed 10% (indicated) per second or O to 100% in 10 seconds
at a constant rate of change.

(6)

Interaction of Pointers. Check for movement of two of the' three

pointers, held first at zero, then at approximately ~o~ and lOO~
speeds whi1e the third pointer is moved through its entire range.
Interactions of pointers must not exceed the friction tolerances"
shown in TabIe 503 for Mode1s 8DJ131AAJ, -AAT, -LAE, -LAF, -LAN,
-LAV, -LAW, -LBA, -LBK, -LBT and 0.6% for Model 8DJ131AAG, -LAZ.

(7)

Low Speed Starting. Run each synchronous motor separate1y.

Increase test generator speed slow1y from start, and observe speed
at which the motor "kicks" into synchronism. The kick-in point must
not exceed 180 cpm except for the Mode1 8DJ131LBK and -LBT rotors
which must not exceed 135 cpm.
