B. The Type BDJl3l Tachometer Indicator is designed for helicopter use.
2. Description
A. The Type BOJl3l Tachometer Indicator is a hermetically-sealed unit
3. Princip1es of Operation
A. The three synchronous motors of the triple tachometer indicator are
driven separate1y by the 3-phaae supplies of the rotor and engine
tachometer generators, which are coupled to the rotor drive and the
engines. Frequencies of the supp1y voltages from the generators. which
vary direct1y with rotor and engine speeds. determine the speeds of the
synchronous indicator motors. Torques proportional to these speeds are
then app1ied through magnetic coup1ing to the indicating mechanisms. The
pointers attached to the indicating mechanisms indicate these speeds on
the ca1ibrated scale.
B. The synchronous motors are the self-starting, permanent-magnet type. The
magnetic couplings which permit slippage between the drives and the
speeds.
4. Leading Particu1ars
A. Leading particulars for the models covered in this manual are listed in
Table 2. When individual models are not 1isted. the information is the

H. Particular care must be taken not to damage springs and magnets.
l. All parts should be checked completely for the absence of burrs and the'
thoroughness of the cleaning operation.
J. Replace lacing where it has been removed.
K. Test as noted during assembly, before sealing.
L. During assembly, refer to IPL Fig. 1 through 7 for identification of
parts. Refer to Table 1001 for test equipment. Refer to Table 504 for
bulk material s used in repair and assembly.
2. Magnet and Shaft Assemblies
A. If the magnet and shaft assemblies (12, IPL Fig. 5) have been
disassembled, proceed as follows:
B. Models 8DJ13lAAGl, AAG SUB 1, -AAJ, -LAE, -LAN, -LAV, -LAW, -LAZ, -LBA
Only. Refer to IPL Fig. 6.
(1) Assemble spacer (13) on shaft (12), insert shaft through hole in
compensator assembly (15), add spacer (14). Then, insert shaft
through hole in magnet plate assembly (9) and secure with nuts (10,
11).
(2) Assemble nuts (7) and the temperature compensator (5) in place with
nuts (6). Then, adjust temperature compensator position with nuts
(6, 7) so that the top surface of the temperature compensator is
0.069 to 0.075 inch from the top surface of the magnets.
NOTE: Final adjustment of the temperature compensator is made
during indicator calibration.
(3) Magnetize the magnet plate assembly (9) and the magnet assembly (2)
to saturation, using Magnetizer, Magnetizer Adapter, and Keeper
(Table 1001). Magnetize by first placing the Keeper against the
magnet assemblies, and then bringing the magnets to the pole pieces
of the Adapter. Magnetize magnets alternately north and soutn, so
that when the two magnet assemblies are assembled, opposite poles
will face each other.
NOTE: Keeper must be left in position until the two magnet
assemblies are assembled. Any separation of the magnet
assemblies withoutkeepers will cause instantaneous
knockdowns of the magnets, and require remagnetizing.
(4) Assemble magnet assembly (2) in place with nuts (4). Then, adjust
nuts (3, 4,) to provide a 0.045 to 0.050 inch air gap between the
magnet assembly (2) and the magnet plate assembly (9).

(1) Assemb1e nuts (5) on the studs of the shaft and post assemb1y (6).
(2) Assemb1e temperature compensator (2) on shaft and post assemb1y
magnets.
NOTE: The temperature compensator (2) provides an adjustment for
the effect of temperature on the magnet and shaEt assemb1y
(12, IPL Fig. 5), the disk and hub assemb1y (2, IPL Fig. 3),
and the control spring (12, 13, 14, IPL Fig. 3). If any oE
these parts have been rep1aced, it wil1 be necessary to
readjust the position of the temperature compensator. In
addition, if the disk and hub assembly has been rep1aced, a
different number of compensators may be required. When on1y
one compensator is required, a dummy compensator (2A, IPL
Fig. 7) must be added to the diametrica1ly opposite set oE
magnets Eor balance purposes. As the dummy compensator wi11
not affect compensation, it can be located at any convenient
distance from the air gap. Final adjustment oE the
temperature compensator is made during indicator
ca1ibration.
(3) Assemb1e magnet assembly (3) on the shaEt and post assemb1y (6).
Then, adjust nuts (5) to provide a 0.045 to 0.050 inch air gap
between the two sets of magnets.
(4) Assemble nuts (4) to hold magnet assemb1y in place.
(5) Magnetize the magnet and shaft assemb1y (12, IPL Fig. 5) to
saturation using Magnetizer and Keeper (Table 100l). Insert the
magnetizing fixture through the long, narrow opening formed by the
drag magnets and the top and bottom p1ates of the magnet and shaft
assembly. Pass sufficient current through the Magnetizer to produce
a ful1 saturation.
