Library Link
By Donna Jones Morris, State Librarian
Utah residents continue to see the value of
library facilities. Two new Utah public library
facilities opened February 27th. A long awaited
development is finally a reality in Salt Lake City
Library Systems Marmalade district. City
officials, library officials, and community
members gathered for a ribbon cutting at the
new Marmalade Library, located at 285 West
500 North in Salt Lake City.
Acting Director Deborah Ehrman thanked many
of those involved in the project. As one of the
speakers at the Grand Opening, it was heartening
to see how excited the neighborhood was for this
new branch library to open!
Hundreds of patrons lined up outside the library
for a chance to check out their new library. One
neighbor commented she has been waiting for this
for a while, ever since the old Safeway was torn
down.
Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski spoke about
how the new location will help bridge a gap. She
looks forward to seeing how things develop
around this anchor and is confident that the
investment is a good one that will serve the Salt
Lake community.

The Weber County Library Systems new Southwest

Branch / Headquarters Library opened the same day with
thousands of people attending the dedication. County and
library officials spoke. The dedication speech was given
by international entrepreneur and investor Alan E. Hall,
who spoke briefly about his impressive life story and then
applauded the wide array of services available in the new
library.
Representing the local community, the West High School
Choir sang and the ROTC presented the flag. Library
Director Lynnda Wangsgard acknowledged those who
worked on the building. She pointed out that the project
came in $2 million under bid. It is located at 2039 West
4000 South in Roy.
Plan your trip to visit these two new shining stars in the
growing group of shining Utah public, academic, school,
and special libraries.
I also encourage the Utah library community to become
familiar with the following resources:

New & Improved

Interlibrary Loan Interface
USL is transitioning to a new platform for
submitting and updating Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
requests. Currently the State Library uses an inhouse database that will be replaced as libraries
transition to the new OCLC Resource Sharing
online module.
The State Library will be the management center
and the public libraries will be group members.
Group members will submit and monitor their
requests, while USL will find libraries to fill the
group members title requests. The libraries will
need to use both systems during the transistion,
as the OCLC ILL interface will not have the current
requests from the old ILL database.
Log-in and training information for the new ILL
Interface will be emailed to each library, along
with a dedicated URL login and username. Each
library will then need to create a password to
access the system.
Training will be provided online through a series
of video tutorials. The access to the new interface
will be in phases as libraries are set up by OCLC.
The new interface enables group members to :
Initiate renewals

Utah Government Digital Library

The Utah Government Digital Library (UGDL) is the
online portal to over 68,000 government created
publications including maps, newsletters, financial
reports, and every imaginable set of state statistics. The
library includes historical publications of the Utah
Historical Society, law publications of the Utah State
Legislature, vast collections of wildlife publications,
historical photos of libraries, statistics on crop production,
employment reports, and much more.
While many other digital libraries provide search access to
cataloging metadata, the UGDL also supports searching of
the entire full text of publications. The UGDL allows users
to easily and freely download eBooks and videos . Its a
great resource for anyone wishing to build their own
personal research library. USLs library staff assists
researchers with finding elusive documents and digitizing
them as needed. USL is always interested in collaborating
with local governments, tribes, universities, and public
school districts to help them provide permanent online
public access to their rare and valuable collections of
public documents.

The goal is to have all participating libraries

trained on the system by May 31, 2016. The old
interface will be disabled on June 30, 2016.
Additional information and training links will
be available at library.utah.gov/ill.

Library Program for the Blind

and Physically Disabled
The Utah State Librarys Program for the Blind
and Physically Disabled serves Utahns that are
unable to use regular print material due to
blindness, visual, or physical disability. An application for library service is required and is available on the Blind Library website:
blindlibrary.utah.gov. The application must be
signed by a certifying authority. For blindness,
visual, or physical disabilities, the certifying
authority can be but is not limited to: a doctor,
nurse, social worker, clergy or MLIS/MLS
degreed librarian. The disability exception is
dyslexia, which requires an M.D. signature.
The Program circulates materials in special
formats including large print, Braille and
proprietary audio. All materials and the
playback equipment for the audio books are
provided free of charge and are shipped via the
U.S. Postal Service.

Online Book Discussion
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doer
Discussion led by Paula Stuart,
Utah State Library for the Blind
Tuesday, May 10, 2 PM to 3 PM (MDT)
Synopsis: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the
Museum of Natural History, where he works as the
master of its thousands of locks. When she is six,
Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect
miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it
by touch and navigate her way home. When she is
twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter
flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where
Marie-Laures reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house
by the sea. With them they carry what might be the
museums most valuable and dangerous jewel.
In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows
up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio
they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and
fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins
him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a
special assignment to track the resistance. More and
more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into
Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laures
converge.
Note: Contains violence and descriptions of sex.

Utah Bookmobiles
The Utah State Library works in a contracted
collaborative way to provide bookmobile library
services throughout the state. USL has eight
trucks serving 13 counties and eight
headquarters, serving populations from Garden
City to Big Water; from Hanksville to Eskdale.
The librarians onboard have a Commercial Drivers License which authorizes them to drive the
trucks. They order books, serve patrons, and
troubleshoot heaters and generators. They drive
up 14 per cent grades, set up shop in the middle
of nowhere in freezing temperatures, work as a
team with a technician they see only a few hours
a week or less, and drive a collective 100,000
miles a year to bring full library services to those
who might otherwise go without.
The technicians work in the headquarters
locations receiving and cataloging new materials,
ordering supplies, and sometimes even providing
story times and other activities.

See Bookmobile full line up of services and

schedules at bookmobiles.utah.gov
As one big team, we make a difference in
peoples lives every day by bringing the great
equalizer to rural Utah: an opportunity to
expand minds and learning through library resources. Bookmobile patrons love our downloadable book collection, our technicians and
librarians, and all the services we provide.
To be a bookmobile patron you need only live in
a county to which we provide servicecome

Book Buzz
The Utah State Librarys Book Buzz program lends book
sets to independent book groups, libraries, schools,
organizations, and community centers.
Book sets typically include 15 copies and check-out for
eight weeks.
Delivery of the book sets is paid by the State Library;
however, the cost to return the books to USL is the
responsibility of the borrowing library or the book group
coordinator.
Popular titles include:
Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger
All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
The Camel Club by David Baldacci
Mormon Country by Wallace Stegner
Wonder by Raquel J. Palacio.

Lists of the books in the collection are available by title,

genre, fiction or non-fiction on the Book Buzz

Summer Reading Program

Talk, Sing, Read, Write, Play

On Your Mark, Get Set READ!

Remind parents of the importance of talking,

singing, reading, writing and playing with their children
by giving them Utah Kids Ready to Read stars. The stars
are available in five languages: English, Spanish,
Mandarin, French, and Somali, to encourage parents to
engage in literary activities with their children in their
preferred native language.

Summer Reading is right around the corner.

Are you ready to Get in the Game?
Will you Exercise Your Mind?
USL helps support the Summer Reading
Program at public libraries across the state.
According to the American Library Association,
the benefits of participating in a summer
reading program include the development of a
lifelong reading habit, drawing reluctant readers
into activities, boosting reading skills in children,
and generating interest in books and libraries.
Summer Reading is a great opportunity for the
whole family to have fun all summer!

Babies Need Words Every Day

Utah State Library is distributing Babies Need
Words Every Day posters to libraries. Babies
Need Words Every Day: Talk, Read, Sing, Play
is an Association for Library Service to Children
initiative designed to bridge the 30 Million Word

build their childrens literacy skills.
Posters will be available at Utah Library
Association conference in May. There are eight
posters, in both English and Spanish, for a total
of sixteen. Please limit posters to one group of
sixteen per library facility.
