Project. FILS is engaged in federal court litigation with pro bono
firms aimed at addressing the inadequate mental health services
being provided to the most seriously mentally ill inmates in the
custody of the Florida Department of Corrections. Students
working on the Prison Mental Health Reform Project will review
client mental health and medical records for use by co-counsel
and expert witnesses and conduct legal research for use in
litigation.
Pro Bono Spanish-Speaking Legal Intern: Florida Institutional
Legal Services (FILS) is seeking Spanish-speaking law students to
assist with providing translation services related to the provision
of legal counsel to clients. Pro bono legal interns will also

supports FILS attorneys in conducting client interviews, preparing


legal documents, and conducting legal research. Pro bono legal
interns will be based in the Newberry office and will be permitted
a flexible schedule to accommodate academic commitments.
Pro Bono Litigation Volunteers: Law student pro bono
opportunities are available at Southern Legal Counsel (SLC) for
the Fall 2015 semester to provide litigation support for the case
Citizens for Strong Schools v. State Bd. of Educ. (Fla. 2d Jud. Cir.).
This case is set for a five week trial in March 2016 and alleges
that Florida is violating the state constitution by failing to provide
adequately fund a system of high-quality public schools. The
case was brought by two citizen organizations and low income
African American and Latino parents, grandparents, and students
against the Florida State Board of Education, the Department of
Education and the Florida Legislature. The case was filed in 2009
and has already been up to the Florida Supreme Court and back
on political question and whether the trial court has jurisdiction to
hear the case. Haridopolos v. Citizens for Strong Schools, 78
So.3d 605 (Fla. 1st DCA 2011) (en banc), cert. denied, Case No.
12-216 (Fla. 2012).
SLC is a statewide not-for-profit public interest law firm that is
committed to the ideal of equal justice for all and the attainment
of basic human and civil rights. Student volunteers will assist the
attorneys in preparing this case for trial which will include:
