The School Nurses Role

in Concussion

This course will discuss the integral role school nurses play as part of
a multidisciplinary team in concussion management. Presented by a
school nurse with years of experience, this course will detail how to
work with schools both with and without athletic trainers, how to set
up a school concussion policy, and will give recommendations for
post-concussion academic modifications and safe return to learn
and play.

The target audience for this course is school nurses. Sports Medicine

Athletic Trainers are welcome to attend to learn more about the
multidisciplinary approach to managing concussions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, the learner will be able to:

Identify the school nurses role in an interdisciplinary


concussion management team.

Identify common signs and symptoms of concussion.

Discuss ways that a school nurse may be involved in return to


learn, academic modifications, and parent, athlete, and school
staff education.

Create a plan to educate parents, athletes, and school staff on


concussion.

provide lmPACT with at least three (3) calendar days notice in
advance of the workshop; (ii) reschedule to participate in another
workshop of equal or lesser value; or (iii) substitute someone to
participate in the workshop in your place. If you provide notice to
ImPACT fewer than three (3) calendar days in advance of the
workshop, you may reschedule to participate in another event of
equal or lesser value or substitute someone in your place, but you
cannot receive a refund. All cancellations and refund requests must
be submitted by the purchaser to lmPACT Applications, Inc. and
emailed to training@impacttest.com.

Completion Policy

It is the responsibility of the learner to claim only those hours


actually participated, rounded to the nearest quarter-hour.
Attendance will be tracked through the webinar software.

Continuing Education Credits


Athletic Trainers

ImPACT Applications, Inc. (BOC AP# P3429) is approved


by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing
education to Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible
for a maximum of 2.0 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs
should claim only those hours actually spent in the
educational program.

Physical Therapists

At this time ImPACT is not able to offer pre-approved continuing


education credits to physical therapists for this course. You will
receive a certificate of attendance for each of our courses with
contact hours listed. Review your state laws to determine if this
training can be applied toward continuing education without
pre-approval.

Physicians

At this time, ImPACT is not able to offer AMA PRA Category 1


Credits. You will receive a certificate of attendance for each of our
courses with contact hours listed. Review your local, state, and
national Medical Society laws to determine if this training can be
applied towards AMA PRA Category 2 Credits. Click here for more

Other Healthcare
Professions

At this time ImPACT is not able to offer continuing education credits


to occupational therapists, psychologists, registered nurses, or
other healthcare professionals. We are in the process of applying to
be able to offer credits to as many disciplines as possible and hope

The School Nurses Role in Concussion Management

Elizabeth McDermott, BA, BSN, RN, NCSN


L/MS Nurse
Georgetown Day School
Washington, DC

Elizabeth received her BA in Biology and Psychology from Kenyon College in 1986,
and went on to earn a BSN from George Mason University in 1994. She holds a
national certification in school nursing, has completed the American Heart
Association BLS, and is a First Aid Instructor. She has completed multiple trainings
through ImPACT and has been administering baseline and post injury tests since
2011.
Elizabeth taught high school biology and middle school physical science from 19861993. In 1999, she transitioned to her current role as School Nurse at Georgetown
day school where, in conjunction with the athletic trainer, she developed
concussion protocols which have been used as a model for other schools in the
Washington, DC area. In the past year, she has worked as the private school
representative with the Childrens Hospital SCORE concussion clinic and the
Medstar hospital system, through which she has assisted in the implementation of
a concussion program in DC schools, the Parks and Rec department, and in other
local sports leagues. She also serves as a consultant for other DC area schools and
assists them in the creation of concussion protocols. In the past, Elizabeth has
served as President of the DC School Nurses Association and currently serves on
the board of directors for the National Association of School Nurses.
Elizabeth has three children. She has experienced concussion management from a
parental perspective with her daughter, who has suffered concussions in recent
years.
