Proposal Could Bring Suspension School

to Beach Channel
By Katie McFadden
A Department of Education
proposal could rattle the current state of the Beach Channel Educational Campus if approved. Social media lit up with
complaints after news spread
about a proposal to relocate a
school for suspended students
from MS 53 in Far Rockaway to
the Beach Channel campus.
In late January, the DOE proposed a re-siting and co-location of Alterative Learning
Center M.S. 53 to the building
shared by Channel View School
for Research, Rockaway Park
High School for Environmental Sustainability, Rockaway
Collegiate High School and
P.S. Q256, starting in the 20162017 school year. Students of
ALC M.S. 53 are sixth through
eighth grade students who are
on a Superintendents Suspension for up to 90 days. These are
students who commit Level 3

to Level 5 offenses. Level 3 offenses can include gang behavior, vandalism and plagiarism.
Level 5 offenses can be anything from starting a fire to violence to possessing a weapon.
The proposed re-siting of
ALC M.S. 53, currently located at 10-45 Nameoke Street,
comes as a result of another
proposal, which was approved
in November 2015. That proposal called for the opening
of Success Academy Charter
School in the M.S. 53 building,
which would require ALC M.S.
53 to be relocated out of the
building to make room for the
new school to share the building. The DOE determined the
Beach Channel campus to be
a potential location because it
is underutilized. The Beach
Channel building has a capacity potential of 2,791 students.
In the current school year, 1,522
students are enrolled, which
is only 56 percent utilization.

ALC schools can only have 80

students enrolled at any given
time, so the DOE projects anywhere from 30 to 80 additional students would be enrolled
in the 2016-2017 school year if
the proposal is approved. This
could increase the potential
enrollment utilization to 62
percent.
Parents, staff members and
parents of potential students
were not happy about the news.
Some parents said they were
aware of the proposal since it
was introduced at school meetings and petitions have been
going around for a few weeks.
However the only official public hearing with the Department of Education in regards to
this proposal was held on the
evening of Thursday, March
17, St. Patricks Day, which
was allegedly lightly attended. The next step needed for
approval is a vote held by the
Panel for Educational Policy at

6 p.m. on Wednesday, March

23. (Since this was past press
time, the outcome of this vote
is unknown, but the Rockaway
Times will provide updates.)
Prior to the vote, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder called on
the DOE to allow for further input before a decision is made.
Every parent should have the
opportunity to weigh in on decisions that could affect their
childs education, Goldfeder
said. The co-location plan for
Beach Channel is major decision that could have far-reaching consequences for all students and faculty involved.
Holding a single hearing on St.
Patricks Day at a time when
many parents are still at work
does not allow for the public
input that this proposal deserves. I urge the Department
of Education to hold additional public hearings and ensure

Yakety Yak
Lets talk about talking. Who
talks the most in your circle of
family and friends? Any clear
windbag winners? Any yakety
yakkers? Anybody able to talk
the tin ears off a brass jug? Or
whatever the expression is. I
guess if I wasnt so busy talking I might have a better idea of
the exact expression. But like
anybody trying to overcome a
problem, the first thing you do
is admit it. So I admit listening
isnt a strong point, which will
come as a shock to exactly no
one.
But that doesnt mean I cant
hear. That doesnt mean I can
tune out the blowhards, the
windbags, and the acutely annoying. Unfortunately, I hear
them until my ears bleed.
I was reminded how Im at the
mercy of those who drone on a

recent ride in a car service. The

guy wouldnt stop. I dont remember much of what he said
but traffic is best on Mondays
and Thursdays are the worst
and sometimes he beats the
GPS by a minute or two. And
then his voice just started to
sound like a dentist drill with a
Russian accent.
I was at the point where I was
just about able to tune him out
but then he said something and
cracked himself up and his evil
villain laugh made me pay attention again. But I didnt dare
ask him what was so funny and
then he went on about people
not knowing how to drive. And
on and on.
I guess the guy fell into the
category of the yakety yakker
people who just have to fill
the empty air with sounds. For
them silence isnt golden, its
life threatening. They must fight
it with all their words. In the car
they read billboards and other signs aloud for no apparent
reason other than to ward off

silence, the silent killer. Sometimes they even read the cars
make and model that might be
inscribed on the glove compartment or floor mat. It will be
quiet for about twenty seconds
and suddenly they will blurt,
Hyundai. When no one responds they then say Sonata
or Elantra.
Again no one responds so
they look out the window and
say, Speed Limit 25 miles an
hour.
Now, first date silence in a
car might be a little awkward
and its understandable if you
babble a little. But the reason
Henry Ford put a radio in a car
is so you didnt have to talk all
the time. And you know if you
babble too much there wont
be another date. Babbling is for
brooks.
God knows, if one of my
brothers goes on too long with
a story we start acting like a
ground crew on the tarmac
waving our arms to land the
plane already. Bring it home,

bring it home. Youre killing us,

land the plane already.
If the plane has to take a detour
it better be to somewhere good.
We dont want to know about
your third grade teacher if she
has nothing to do with the story.
The yakety yakkers are usually just nervous nellies who
cant get comfortable with silence. And the rest of us suffer
in silence. Or at least the silence we long for.
Im doing too much talking
and I havent even gotten to
the blowhards but if youre a
nervous nelly and youre yapping and someone hasnt responded with words, a chuckle, a nod, whatever, that means
they are begging you to shut
up. Look above their heads
and see the thought bubble.
PLEASE SHUT UP! PLEASE, I
SAID PLEASE!
Uh-oh, I just realized some
people I know might think Im
talking about them. Im not.
But its ok if you give me the silent treatment.

Inauguration of a Torah Scroll

By Pat Morgan

You might have been wondering what all the excitement was
on Cronston Avenue and Beach
129th Street this past Sunday afternoon, March 19th,
Yeshiva Mercaz Hatorah of
Belle Harbor (505 B. 129 Street)
made an Inauguration of a Torah
scroll (or Hachnosas Sefer Torah)
which was written in memory
of the Yeshivas founder, the beloved Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Levi
Dicker, of blessed memory.
This is a ceremony in which
one or more Torah scrolls are installed in a synagogue, or in the
sanctuary or study hall of a yeshiva, rabbinical college, university
campus, nursing home, military
base, or other institution. The
ceremony is held for new and restored scrolls alike, as well as for
the transfer of Torah scrolls from
one sanctuary to another.
If the Torah scroll is a newly
written one, as it was in this past
Sundays event, the ceremony
begins with the writing of the last
letters of the scroll in the home

of the donor. All scrolls are then

carried in an outdoor procession
to the synagogue, characterized
by singing, dancing, and musical accompaniment. Inside the
synagogue, there is more singing and dancing, a short prayer
service, placement of the scroll
in the Torah ark, and a seudat
mitzvah or celebratory meal.
For this event, the Torah scroll
was brought from Rebbetzin
Chana Dickers home on Newport Avenue to Yeshiva Mercaz
Hatorah. The joyous procession
was led by Rabbi Levi Dickers
son, Rabbi Shmuel Zev Dicker,
who now has followed in his fathers footsteps as the head of
the Yeshiva. The new scroll was
brought into the sanctuary of
the Yeshiva, where it will have
its place among the other Torah
scrolls that are housed there.
There were approximately 200
people in attendance, mostly Yeshiva students and alumni
(many bringing their own children), who paraded and danced
down Cronston Avenue from
Beach 140th Street to the Yeshiva

on Beach 129th Street. The rabbis and others carried the new
Torah beneath the canopy until
it arrived outside the doors of the
Yeshiva. At that time, the other
Torah scrolls from inside the Yeshiva were brought out to greet
the new scroll.
According to long-time Belle
Harbor resident, Avi Kunstler, a
neighbor curiously poked her
head out the door to ask him
what was going on. When he explained the reason of the celebration, she exclaimed that this
is the most beautiful thing Ive
ever seen in this neighborhood.
She was impressed how happy,
respectful, and sincere this occasion was.
After the procession, prayers
and dancing were held in the
sanctuary of the Yeshiva. The celebrants then boarded buses that
took them to the Ohab Zedek
ballroom for a festive meal,
which was similar in exuberance
to a wedding.

The ferry trip is an hour. Then
youll have to walk a bit from the

March 20th into the 21st brings

the vernal equinox, that time of
year when the so-called solar terminator is perpendicular to the
equator, meaning that the edge
between day and night is blurred,
and marks the beginning of
spring.
So it was not completely alien
that it should snow on March
20th leading into a spring like day
on March 21st. And with all that
is glorious about spring and the
coming of Easter with little crocus
and daffodils poking their heads
above ground, giving hope for
an end to the dreariness of winter, there was a moment when
we lost someone we cared very
much about.
And so it was early Monday
morning when we received a
phone call from the nursing
home that Marilyn Timothy had
taken advantage of that moment
between day and night, so precariously balanced, and left us
to join her husband Bill, and her
mom and dad. Marilyn was a
beautiful human being; she was
kind and gentle, caring and reflective, and prayerful. She believed in God with all her spirit,
and you felt that when you were
around her. And she loved her
family very much.
I came to know Marilyn as a
result of marrying one of her five
daughters. The deal brought me
into a family rich with Irish heritage and proud of their New York
roots. A little bit crazy too, but I
guess I repeat myself. Marilyns
grandfather owned a funeral

home on the West Side of New

York, but her dad, a chemical
engineer, had other plans and
moved to Jackson Heights. Marilyn attended Blessed Sacrament
in NY and the College of Mount
St. Vincent in Riverdale, but
spent a lot of time in the Rockaways Bungalow Colonies. When
she married Big Bill of Woodside,
they moved to Rockaway to raise
a family that eventually reached
six.
They worked hard and they
never lost their faith. Marilyn was
like a second mother to me, always there to help in any way she
could. I benefited mostly from
Marilyns prayers, as I believe she
had a direct line to the big guy
upstairs. And so its quite a beautiful thing that she passes at a
time when snow brings in spring
sunshine, and slips out between
the day and night, after 90 years
of time on this earth. I consider
myself very lucky to have known
Marilyn, and now I pray for her,
but somehow I believe she is still
praying for us all, and has a closer
seat to make those prayers. And it
is so like Marilyn, to not disrupt
anything, she passed on the first
day of spring and the first day of
Holy Week, without interrupting any of the services for Easter.
Her family will gather this week,
and there will be many stories,
perhaps a few beers, hopefully
no fights, and many, many hugs.
And prayers; prayers for Marilyn, prayers for Old Rockaway,
prayers for family. And prayers
for the hope that spring brings us,
even with snow. Rest easy Marilyn, youve earned it.

PROPOSAL

Continued from Page 3

that every opinion is carefully
and fully considered before any
final decision is made.
Goldfeder sent a letter to DOE
Chancellor Carmen Faria, requesting additional hearings on
the proposal. The letter echoed
parents fear that the addition
of another student body to the
campus would stymie growth
in instructional and extra-curricular programs at the other
schools on the current campus.
He cited the change in the reputation of the Beach Channel
campus in recent years. One of
the schools on campus, CVSR,
currently ranks above borough
and citywide graduation rates,
with an 85 percent 4-year graduation rate during the 20142015 school year.
Several parents expressed
concern over changing the campus. We want to see growth
at the campus, but we would
prefer that it be organic and focused on the schools already
there, Kathy Ryan, PTA President at Channel View School for

THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2016

Research, said. When I brought
my daughter to Channel View
eight years ago, the campus
didnt have the best reputation.
It was no small feat overcoming
this and we dont want to see
all our hard work be undone by
this proposal.
Another concerned parent, Priya Nembhard, said she
would consider pulling her two
children out of Channel View if
the proposal becomes a reality.
My kids were home schooled
in Ozone Park. We pay tolls and
make a financial investment
to go to Channel View because
it was the best school in the
area. It is a selective, environmental research school with
small classes. My kids get a lot
of attention and have a great
relationship with the staff and
students. I sent my kids there
because I didnt want them to
be in an overcrowded school or
situation where there are a lot of
fights, she said. Now they want
to bring children from ALC who
have been suspended. These
are kids that have done violent
things and ALC is essentially
their rehabilitation school. Now

Page 9

that Beach Channel has been

cleaned up for so long, theres a
concern that the culture would
return to what it was when it
had a bad reputation. We dont
want to put our kids at risk. Wed
strongly consider pulling them
out of Channel View if this proposal happens.
State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr. said the proposal, if it
happens, could be a success if
it is carried out properly. One
of the major problems our
citys public school system faces is a chronic lack of space for
the growing population of students. While I understand that
changes like co-locating some
suspension program students
into Channel View High School
may be inevitable, and I have
heard the concerns of students
and parents, our focus should
be on making sure any decision on how to utilize available
building space does not affect
the success of the students or
their ability to learn. Channel
View High School has worked
hard to transform its atmosphere and move toward a more
positive learning environment,

and it is important that this progress not be interrupted by any

possible changes by the Department of Education. While
nothing is set in stone yet, it is
my belief that co-locating students from the suspension program into Channel View High
School could be successful if
done properly, including giving a dedicated entrance to the
incoming students through the
buildings underutilized E wing
and ensuring they have the
appropriate space where both
groups of students can thrive
separately despite sharing a

An Easter Story

Back in the early 1960s I

attended Brooklyns Bishop Loughlin Memorial High
School under the strict tutelage of the De La Salle
Christian Brothers, a religious order of men which
I firmly believe to this day
served as a covert witness
protection program where
the feds stashed overly talk-

ative but religious members

of the Brooklyn Bonanno
crime family. At the time
Loughlin was an all male
student high school, the
entrance to which should
have been emblazoned with
the admonition, Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter
Here! The Christian Brothers, replete with perpetual scowls, not only taught
most classes but they also
relentlessly patrolled the
halls and all other areas of
the school dressed in dark,
floor length, cassocks secured with a cloth rope belt
in their eternal hunt for student neer-do-wells. When
out of earshot (and decades
before Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones made the term
famous) we referred to them
as the Men in Black.
In 1965 I was struggling
(translation: failing miserably) with my French class
and I was pulled aside by
Brother Dennis, the Dean
of Discipline, who made me

an offer I could not refuse. If

I agreed to teach catechism
(a collection of questions and
answers that are used to teach
children about the Catholic
religion) after school each
Wednesday to students from
a nearby public school for two
semesters I was assured that
divine intervention would
arrange a passing grade in
French. As my somewhat less
than stellar deportment in
school had already made me a
frequent visitor to after school
detention activities, I figured
why not?
Every Wednesday at 2:45
pm I would head down to
the school library where I
would be greeted by a group
of 10-12 boys and girls from
the local public school all
of whom were even less enthused about being there
than I was. After a few weeks
an informal arrangement
evolved between the students and myself. I wouldnt
bust their chops and they
wouldnt bust mine.

Dear Editor:
I along with many residents
are getting sick and tired of the
person or persons who continue to
destroy our bus shelters. I know for
a fact the NYPD know about this
but they cant be everywhere when
they are patrolling to protect our

if you know who did this at Beach

Time was when Rockaway
was a sleepy town, and City

Maybe ten guys surfed at 90th

like Buddy Sammis, Mark
OMalley, Gary OGrady. Sorry
if I didnt name you all. We
were friends and looked after
each other. Then Rockaway was
discovered, like Columbus
discovered America. The
hordes chased us away. Now
the kooks have fistfights on the
beach over whose-wave-it-was.
Its too overcrowded already
but theyre building more high

think about the $$$ coming in!
Folks, dont be deceived, most
of the real money is being taken

by telling him that I thought
I might have been unduly

George Carlin. The Men in

Needless to say, I failed
French and to add insult to

Religion, which was somewhat akin to failing gym as

you really had to work at it.
I also spent the rest of that
semester in twice-weekly
detentions in order to write
a thousand word essay on
religious profanity. For the
duration of my time at Bishop Loughlin, and especially
during the Easter season, I
was looked upon by the Men

of Hester Prynne in Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter. In my senior year
I thought I could cleverly
ingratiate myself with the
powers that be by implying
that I might be considering
a religious vocation. I was
immediately awarded additional detention time, referred to St. Bartholomews

Atlantic Avenue for any further vocational discussions
and ordered never to broach
that particular subject at
school again!

Belle Harbor Property Owners Meeting Recap

By Pat Morgan

Being an invested member

of this community, I like to
stay informed on whats going
on. I find that attending the local home owners association
is one of the best ways of doing it. You can hear the information first hand, you can ask
questions of the offices representing you and the interaction is very enlightening.
I attended the recent Belle
Harbor Property Owners
meeting on March 15th at PS/
MS 114. Captain Craig Adelman of the 100th Precinct lead
off the meeting with an update
on local activity. The main topic was the Rockaway parade,
where the precinct arrested
6 people and issued 38 summons. He also cited the concert
at Riis Park, which was held on
federal land, but the precinct
was not notified of this event.
Captain Adelman then moved
on to beach related issues, such
as coverage for the upcoming
season (parking issues, towing

operations) as well as the traffic issues with the Cross Bay

Bridge last summer. He noted
that the bridge will be moving
to a cashless toll (i.e. drivers
get charged by mail). As far as
agents helping with the traffic
at the bridge, the 100th Precinct is at mercy of other major
events occurring in NYC.
Samantha Schneider from
Project Restoration was the
next speaker. This program is
associated with Northshore
LIJ, and is intended for Sandy
related issues. There is mental
health screening available for
adults 18 and over. They are
looking for a local site where a
survey would be successful.
The meeting moved on to
discuss beach block activity. An update was provided
by Harry Felder, who is the
community liaison on behalf
of Department of Design and
Construction (DDC). He keeps
an eye on the contractors and
coordinates with the DOT and
Mayors office. He also notifies
residents of activity and acts as

the point of contact for questions. Harry has a local office

and can be reached at 718 474
4270. BHPOA President, Hank
Iori, handed out copies of a
petition that will be directed
to the mayor from the BHPOA/
NHOA/RCA for additional
funding to complete street
and sidewalk construction. All
Beach Block residents are encouraged to sign this.
There was supposed to be a
speaker from Economic Devel-

opment Corporation regarding

the Ferry, but they cancelled
earlier that day. It is thought
that the reason for cancellation is because they were presenting the plan to the City
Council, which announced
Hornblower as the operator on
the next day, March 16th.
Portia Cook-Dyrenforth, Administrator for the Parks Department spoke next. She stat-

The sewer has been in this
condition since at least the January blizzard. So our question
is: How much longer will it take
for someone to notice? Its only
a matter of time before a pet,
valued goods, or yes, someones
ankle goes falling in. And then
the city will be on the hook for
a lot more than college tuition.

Voting Open for Participatory

Budgeting
NOT WITHOUT CONTROVERSY
lieve that the integrity of the
PB process has been compromised On Feb 5, the Budget
Delegates received an email
from Council Member Ulrichs aide informing us that
the CM decided that he would
let the Budget Delegates decide how to handle the voting
this year. On February 29,
Budget Delegates selected
the projects to be placed on
the ballot, along with their
dollar amounts. At the beginning of the meeting, Council
Member Ulrichs aide announced that the CM decided
to leave the voting process as
is for this year. Some, if not
all, of the Budget Delegates
had been given no notice
of this prior to the meeting.
This reversal and the fact that
it was presented with no no-

items were determined after

several weeks of meetings by
the Volunteer Budget Delegates. More than fifty proposals were submitted at community meetings and through
social media. The projects
were subject to review, as
they had to meet certain
qualifications for the funding. The Budget Delegates
narrowed down the choices
to 15 projects for review, five
of which were chosen for the
ballot. Since there was only
a small number of approved
proposals, Ulrich added four
projects from last years ballot that received a lot of votes
but didnt meet the threshold
for voting.
One delegate, Jill Lauri,
took issue with the process.
In a letter to The Rockaway
Times, Lauri wrote: I be-

Participatory Budgeting process is underway and its time
to vote for how $1 million
should be used for projects in
District 32. Councilman Eric
Ulrichs office has released
the ballot and voting schedule for the next few weeks.
For the fifth year, Councilman Ulrich is conducting
Participatory Budgeting. Under the process, the community gets to decide how their
taxpayer money is spent in
the community. Some projects that have been awarded in past years include
upgrades to local schools, additional resources for libraries, a performance space for
concerts and events near the
boardwalk, upgrades to the

Rockaway Park dog run, and

the addition of playground
equipment to local parks.
The 2016 ballot has been
released based on community input and now its time
to vote. In order to vote, constituents must be at least 14
years of age and have proof
of residence or registration
in a public school in the 32nd
Council District in Rockaway
or Broad Channel. Voters
may vote for up to five of the
nine proposals on the ballot, and may only vote once
during the two-week voting
cycle. Voting began on Sunday, March 20 and continues
through Saturday, April 2.
Volunteers will count the ballots and announce the results
by Tuesday, April 5.

First Kids Store to Open

in Rockaway Beach
By Katie McFadden

Its time to play, Rockaway.

Luisa Louis is hoping to provide
an outlet for young children to
learn and grow creatively with
a store that caters to kids and
their parents. NiLu Kids, a kids
store that will provide arts and
crafts activities, baby and parent meet-ups, gifts for sale and
more, is about to open in Rockaway Beach.
Luisa, a native of France,
moved to Rockaway from Harlem about three years ago,
shortly after she had her first
child and noticed a need for a
local space for young children
and their parents. When my
daughter turned three in December, my husband, Nigel
and I were looking for a place
to do a birthday party. Kids N
Shape in Rockaway is awesome,
but they were booked for six
months, and we didnt want to

make our guests travel over the

bridge, so we had a party at the
Bungalow Bar. We had a great
time, but we saw a need for a
place for kids. The idea was to
create a party rental space, but
that transformed as we went
along and decided a kids toy
store that offered arts and crafts
would be beneficial to the community, Louis said. As a mother, Louis hopes the space will
also serve as a meeting spot
for parents. Theres nothing
for mothers here. I wanted to
provide a place where mothers
could come and unload and be Luisa Louis

advice and vent and have a sup- Where Creativity Grows. It is a

will discover different colors,
textures and learn how to use
them, she said. As a creative
person herself, Louis understands the benefits of art. Im
a photographer and Im always doing something artistic
with my daughter. When youre
dealing with young kids, art is
the easiest way to have them
learn something, she said.
Besides providing tasks for
children, Louis hopes the space
will be helpful for parents.
During the week, were going
to have baby and me classes
for moms and dads, she said.
From 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., parents and their children will
have time to meet with other
parents and children within a
same age range. Meet-ups for
zero to nine month olds will be
on Tuesdays, nine to 18 months
will be on Wednesdays and 18
to 24 months will be on Fridays.
Its made up for moms, dad,
and their little ones to get to together and meet other parents
with same-age range babies.

The store will also have items

for sale like books, craft kits,
cute clothing and costumes,
beach gear and useful items
for parents. Its really fun
stuff, items that would make
good birthday gifts or just rewards for your kid because
they did awesome at school,
or just because your want to
spoil them, she said. The store
will also serve as a resource
center. Louis hopes to bring
in resources like breastfeeding classes and other tutorials for new parents who may
need some help. The store will
also display resource boards.
There will be two boards at the
entrance. One is for families to
write down what theyre looking for, whether its a nanny, tutor or some other kind of help,
and the other board will be for
providers who are looking for
jobs. People can put their announcements on the board and
find the help they need, she
said.
Louis will be a first-time
business owner, but she understands another side of retail. Ive been modeling for 15

Page 19

years. I love it, but Im someone who likes to pursue their

dreams. Once youre done with
something and it doesnt bring
you any stimulation, it doesnt
fit your soul anymore and you
need to find something else.
Right now what makes me happy is being a mother and being
around little kids. Its a new
venture and Im looking forward to it, she said.
As Louis learns the needs
of local parents, the store and
what it offers may change. The
store and classes will be geared
towards a younger demographic from babies to 5-year-olds,
but Im waiting to see what customers want. Im open to hearing what people are looking for
and Ill make adjustments, she
said. Im new to this. Im going
to make mistakes and theres a
lot of pressure to get it right, but
I want people to know to bear
with me. Im going to do my
best. Like a fine French wine,
its just going to get better as it
goes on. Before the store even
opened, there was a lot of positive feedback on social media.
People are excited. So many

people said God bless you for

doing this. People are really
waiting for things to happen
here. You wont have to pay to
go over the bridge to find something like it. Now its here. You
get to meet your neighbors with
young kids and kids will be able
to make friends that live near
them. It takes a village to raise
a kid. I think with things like
Facebook, weve lost that village and connection with others. Its time for us to build a
village back, she said.
The grand opening for NiLu
Kids will be this weekend from
1p.m. to 4 p.m. on March 26 and
27. In celebration of the holiday, there will be four different

Ask the
DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

The Doctor
Patient Relationship
Today I would like to talk
about the interactions between a patient and a doctor.
Physicians, especially primary care ones, are in reality medical detectives. Like a
good detective interviewing
a witness or suspect, a good
doctor begins the examination before the patient even
says a word. Factors like the
patients attire, mannerisms,
demeanor, gait and speech
patterns may reveal clues to
the diagnosis. When the patient begins to tell the doctor
about his/her symptoms it
is important that the patient
tells the doctor everything,
even symptoms that may be
awkward or embarrassing.
The patient should not omit
any symptoms. In addition
the patient should tell the
doctor if he or she sought care
or received medication for a
condition prior to the current
office visit. For example the
patient may have sought care
at a walk-in clinic or urgent
care center where medication
was prescribed. By failing to
mention this fact the doctor
may prescribe medication
that may interact with what
was previously prescribed.
Once the patient has described his/her symptoms
the doctor will ask questions
to further refine those symptoms. Lets take pain for example. Pain has many variables such as location, severity
(usually on a 1 10 scale), nature (sharp, dull, achy, pressure-like), radiation (the pain
starts at point A but spreads
to point B and/or C), and duration. Then there are other factors such as what starts
the pain (i.e. raising the arm),
what makes it better and what

makes it worse. So you can

see that evaluating a symptom
like pain can be complex. Very
often a doctor may have a list
of potential diagnoses in his/
her head before even examining the patient. The examination serves to confirm some
diagnoses and eliminate others.
A patient who takes medication on a daily basis should
keep a list of them on his or
her person at all times. In addition a patient with a complex medical and/or surgical
history should keep a written
synopsis of that history. Both
of these documents should be
given to the ER staff if the patient is sent to the ER or to the
doctor if the patient is seeing
the doctor for the first time.
Also important for a patient to
keep on their person are the
names and contact information of the physicians who are
treating him/her so that they
may be contacted in case of an
emergency.
So the more specific information that the patient can
provide to the doctor, the easier it may be to arrive at a diagnosis. The patient should
avoid telling the doctor what
he or she thinks the diagnosis
is unless the doctor asks the
patient. Some people find it
helpful to make a list of symptoms to give to the doctor. The
patient should always leave
the doctors office with all of
his or her questions addressed
and should never leave if the
patient is unclear about the
diagnosis or treatment.

All About Energy

Spring has arrived and we
will begin to have lots of positive energy from the sun, flowers, exercise, people we meet,
etc. This week I would like to
discuss energy. There is positive vs. negative, low vs. high,
spiritual vs. non-spiritual.
Energy can be healing and
uplifting. We all have an energy field. In physics, energy
is defined as the property of
objects, which can be transferred to other objects or converted into different forms.
The energy we are familiar
with can be described as the

strength and vitality required

for sustained physical or mental activity. Energy can be
healing and spiritual. I choose
the healing and spiritual energy because it can easily be
felt in my body and mind. It is
real and so very powerful.
Recently, I was taking a yoga
class with Denise Lee and
she quoted, Breath is Spirit.
There is a special energy when
working with the breath. You
feel it, you sit with it, you become one with the breath. Imagine sitting with your breath
and following it within your

body and mind. There may be

this feeling of spirit flowing
with ease. Even if you are having difficulty breathing, you
can use visualization to help
you breathe better. Breath
work creates positive energy
and is liberating. Breathing is
the ignition key to your movement. When you incorporate
breath with movement, you
are again creating magical energy. There is a positive energy field you put out to the universe.
Teaching yoga in a room full
of students who are connecting
to their breath creates a special
energy. Last week one of my
students said to me, There is
a special energy at Ocean Bliss
Yoga. Yes, there really is a great
energy and I believe it stems
from being authentic and human. If you are in an environment where people are honest
and happy, you will feel a wonderful energy that is both healing and uplifting. We dont try
to make energy, we just allow
ourselves to be real and connected. Energy is positive in a
stress-free room.

The Rockaway Times

There may be times in your
life when energy is low. Mentally or physically if there is a
lack of energy it can be debilitating. Sometimes it can be
caused by medicine, other
times it can be hormonal imbalances or perhaps a loss in
your life. Sometimes we will
suffer but there is help out
there. Whether you seek advice from a medical doctor,
therapist, yoga therapist, or
friend, reach out to someone
and dont be afraid or anxious
about your situation. We have
all been through tough times
and there is always support.
Energy can be contagious.
Breath is energy, spirit is energy and we are energy.
In closing, here is a quote
from Marianne Williamson
I love: "We have great power
to affect the attitudes and behavior of the people around
us, at work and at home. We
have the power to set a tone
of honor, and to create an energy around ourselves that
says, I respect myself. I respect you. Let's respect each
other."

Last year, the ice bucket

challenge took our area by
storm. Not just here in the
Rockaways, but the entire
country took part. Even celebrities got soaked all to
raise awareness for a little known disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or
ALS. Started by Pat Quinn
and his team over at Quinn
for the Win, the challenge
was a huge success, raising not only awareness,
but much needed funds
towards research into this
incredibly rare disease.
Fast forward less than a
year, and ALS is again on
the forefront of the minds
of many, particularly those
in Breezy Point and those
who know John Kelly.
Its difficult to describe
John. Words seem to fall
short, but hes a man who
so many admire and look up
to. He has shaped the lives
of countless people through
the years. Following his retirement from the NYC Department of Sanitation as
Chief of Sanitation Police
after managing the local
Rockaway garage, John began a new career targeted at
changing the lives of young
people. Through coaching
football and rugby at Xavier High School and founding the Elite Fitness Camp
in Breezy Point, Coach Kelly
became a Knight in the truest
sense of the word; inspiring
young people to work hard
to reach their goals, teaching
them that good people make
better teammates, and most
importantly to do the right
thing. Earlier this year, after 10 years of coaching, he
retired from Xavier and the
amazing words spoken at the
celebration are echoed by
so many he has truly made
a difference in the lives of

these young people and their

families. In his local community, John has also been
dedicated. He served on the
Board of Directors for Breezy
Point and, like many others,
helped his friends and family rebuild the town they all
love so much after Hurricane
Sandy.
Now, John has his sights set
on a new challenge. He has
again become a Knight, this
time partnering with ALS
One foundation and the ALS
Knights to continue to raise
awareness for the disease.
Recently diagnosed with
PLS, an even more rare motor neuron disease, John has
not let this slow him down.
He immediately began working with ALS One and has involved our local community
to continue the momentum
of the ice bucket challenge.
Through his efforts, there
will be a number of upcoming events around town.
First, on April 5th, local
restaurants will be participating to Eat to Defeat
ALS. PicoRBNY in Rockaway, Kennedys Restaurant
in Breezy Point, and Buckleys Restaurant in Brooklyn
have all generously pledged
to donate 10% of their proceeds from that day to ALS
One. So, if you consider dining out that week, please
make it to one of these three
places that have joined us in
the fight against ALS!
Our first large event will
take place in Breezy Point
on May 6th. Kicking off at
7:30PM, there will be great
live music, plenty of chances
to win amazing prizes, and
tons of fun. For more details
on the events, please visit
our Facebook page at www.
facebook.com/nightforaknight or call 516-557-6496.
We hope that you can join us
for what will be an amazing
night and Never Give Up!

19th street ferry dock and pavilion, plus the many old hotels that
lined Beach 19th Street. A horsedrawn trolley car company ran
its line to the beach from the Far

The horse-drawn buggies and
wagons on the right are on old
South Street, which is the present Seagirt Boulevard. The Artist
had added walkers to the restful

The hotels (left to right) are The

west side of Beach 19th Street and the
big U.S. Hotel on the east side.
The outer beach and all of the
bathing pavilions and restaurants,
were destroyed by the direct hit of
a summers end hurricane in September of 1903. The Long Beach
sandbar came up to Far Rockaway
in later years and was stopped
from hooking up to Edgemere by
the Long Beach stone hook jetty

Can Banks Possibly Pay Negative

Interest Rates
By Tom Boggiano

Get ready for an upside

down world. As far back as
one can remember, the savings process, in its simplest
form, worked like this: you
deposit your money into a
bank, the bank pays you some
level of interest for as long as
you leave it there. The longer
you leave it, the higher your
balance. When needed, you
withdraw the money plus interest. Seems like a no brainer. The amount of interest, of
course changes based on the
rate the banks offer. Rates
over time have changed significantly. In the early 80s
bank CD rates reached about
18 percent per year (ah, the
good old days for savers),
in 2000 they had dropped to
about six percent and since
the bursting of the real estate
bubble in 2008, they have
been below one percent.
Well hold onto your hats because soon we may see coming to a bank near you, negative interest rates. Yes, that
is correct. If you follow the
same process of depositing
your money into the bank,
the bank will charge you interest instead of paying you
interest. Staggering, isnt it?
The longer you leave it the
less you have. Welcome to
the upside down world.
How does all this work?
The interest rate market,
including the interest rate
banks offer on savings accounts and CDs and that the
government offers on short
term US Treasury securities, take their cue from the
Federal Reserve Bank in the
US and their counterparts
in other countries (Bank of
England, European Central
Bank, Bank of Japan etc.).
These central banks are
tasked with guiding interest
rates to levels believed to
allow the economy to prosper without allowing prices
of goods to change, up or
down too dramatically. If

the economy is expanding

too fast and inflation expectations are too high the
central banks will raise interest rates (e.g. early 80s)
and when the economy enters a recession (e.g. 2008)
the central banks will do the
opposite and lower interest
rates in an attempt to kickstart the economy.

countries and Japan. It has

been reported that 40 percent of Europes bonds and
a higher percent of Japans
bonds pay negative interest, i.e charge savers interest
when they buy those bonds.
In Germany, if you invest
your money in a government
bond for two years you will
only get back 99 cents of
every dollar you invest. Furthermore, it is being reported
that German and Swiss banks
are now paying negative interest rates on savings accounts.
How long will it take savers in
these countries to rebel and
take their money out of the
bank finding a better place to
store it? I bet the German version of Sleepys is doing a brisk
business.

our economy been the

strongest of all? Well, in a
recent testimony to Congress, Janet Yellen, the
Chairperson of the U.S.
Federal Reserve Bank, gave
the following answer to
the question of whether
the U.S. would ever pursue
negative interest ratesIn
light of the experience of
European countries and
others that have gone to
negative rates, were taking a look at them again.
Well, maybe it will turn out
to be a good idea that you
kept that mattress your kid
brought home from college.
Although we hope it never
happens, be prepared for
an upside down world.

How did we get to where

we are?
The bursting of the real
estate bubble in 2008 had an
effect on economies worldwide. One may ask how the
real estate market in the US
has such an effect on the
Greek economy. The details
of that would be a discussion for another day but, in
short, the global economies,
(Tom Boggiano is a lifelong

the U.S., such as Lehman,
caused an economic earthquake worldwide. Economies throughout the world
came to a standstill forcing
the global central banks,
led by the Federal Reserve,
to take action to buffer the
severe slowdown and stimulate the global economies.

Pipe
Dreams
By Artie Wallace

OK, maybe that headline didnt

sound right, but have you ever
imagined some of the things you
can do with PVC pipe? In this
weeks DIYer I am going to give
you a few ideas. If you think of
something not listed please send
it in to the email address below.
Shoe rack: Start off with a
length of 6-inch pipe. Cut 12inch lengths and sand the edges
smooth. Glue the pipes together
in a honeycomb pattern (use rope
if needed to hold the pipes while
drying). Once dried, simply place
it where you want with the piping
on its side and put your shoes in.
For a more creative look, before
gluing the pipe together you can
paint the pipe or wrap it using
wallpaper or contact paper.
Bathroom organizer: Starting
with a y pipe (4-inch run and

2-inch off set), paint the pipe

to the color of your choosing.
Standing the pipe on its end (on
a piece of wax paper), place some
pebbles in the pipe for weight
and pour glue in. Allow the glue
to dry thoroughly and its ready to
use. The larger opening will fit the
end of a hair blower, the smaller
opening fits toothpaste or whatever you may need on hand.
Door storage: Using the size
pipe you need to store what
you would like, cut lengths 8 to
10 inches long. Sand the edges
smooth. Secure to the inside of a
bathroom vanity door or kitchen
cabinet door using plastic strap
and small screws. In the bathroom
this could hold curling irons, hold
cords together, etc. In the kitchen
it could hold utensils, bags, etc.
Bag holder: Take a 12-inch or
longer piece of 6-inch pipe (or
larger) and glue a reducer on

Page 31

one end bringing it to a 3-inch

opening. Mount to a wall using
plastic strap with the smaller
opening down. After shopping,
put your bags in the top and pull
the bottom out as needed.
Garage: A length of 3-inch
PVC can go a long way. Cutting 3-inch pieces and securing
them to the wall makes great
way to store rakes, brooms,
etc. For larger items cutting an
opening the length of the pipe
about 1 inches wide would
allow you to hang electric snow
shovels, hedgers, etc.

Shaking the Family Tree Part 2

On Your Way to the Past

By Patrick Morgan

If you know your history, then

you would know where you coming from. Bob Marley (Buffalo
Soldier 1983)
I believe Bob was referring to
history in general, but I think that
this is applicable to researching
your family tree. I hope that Part 1
of this series peaked your interest.
In this second part, I am providing
you some quick start instructions to create your family tree as
well as other resources of interest.
Part 2 Building your Tree
and other resources

Once you have created your account and password on ancestry.

com, its time to start loading your
family details and create your
very own Family Tree. The Home
Page can be a little overwhelming
at first, so heres a shortcut:
At the toolbar on the top, there
is a link that says Trees.
Click on that and youll see the
link that says Create & Manage Trees. Click on Create a
New Tree.
A new screen will pop up that says
Start a New Tree. Start with your
information on the left where it
says + Add a New Person.
This is where youll save time
because you already wrote down
this information. My suggestion
is to work at this in pieces (maybe
30-60 minutes a session) instead
of having a Family Tree Marathon. Correcting mistakes can
be tricky, so take your time entering your information.
The neat part of Ancestry is the
Hints. As you are adding the Life
Event dates, Ancestry starts running your information through its
16 billion records to see if there

are any matches. On the profile

of your relative, you may see a little green leaf, which indicates that
there is a potential match. You can
review that hint and if it matches, incorporate that event into
that relatives profile. If it doesnt
match, simply ignore the hint. The
corresponding image is an example of what a tree looks like.
I wanted to give you an example
of the types of records you can discover. For my father-in-law, Ancestry
found him in the following records:
1940 Census, Passenger list from
Liverpool in 1936, his U.S Navy Muster Roll (from WWII), the page of his
High School yearbook (1944) and his
U.S. Veteran Grave details from 2005.
No one in the family had those records. They are now part of his profile
for future generations to see.
The U.S. Census information
(selected years from 1790 to 1940)
is enlightening. I found the 1940
Census where my mother was
only 7 years old. It listed information about my grandparents like
their place of birth (Ireland), level
of education, as well as employment status and salary (my grandfather earned $1700 in 1939 as a
Motorman for the BMT Railroad).
Ancestry has a nice look and
feel. Each family member has a
profile. If you have family photos,
you can add them to the persons
profile or a specific event. I like to
add wedding photos to my family
members profiles. You can upload
stories about your relatives and
have the ability to create an illustrated short story on each member.
I found that the best way to
use Ancestry is on my desktop
PC. The screen is bigger plus the
photos I need are on my hard

As we approach significant holy

days I wish you a
Joyous, Blessed Easter
and a Happy Passover.

drive. Ancestry also has mobile

apps that can access your tree. I
have the app on my iPhone and
iPad. Its nice to have the app
handy, just in case you are at a
family event and want to share
details with your relatives.
The exciting part of genealogy
is that you never know what or
who you will find. I discovered a
3rd cousin named Noreen from
Ireland and made contact with
her. When Noreen and her husband were on holiday in New
York City in 2012, my uncle and
I met them to catch up on our
common history as well as show
them around Manhattan.
I find my ongoing experience
with family tree research very
rewarding. It provided me a way
to preserve my family history for
my children, grandchildren and
generations to come.
Other resources:
Since my family were recent
immigrants from Ireland, I was
able to obtain some great information from the following sites:
The 1901/1910 Irish Census
this is a free service where you can
find your Irish ancestors at the
turn of last century. I was able to
locate all 8 of my great-grandparents, which allowed me to search
further back into the 1800s. You
can download the actual document. The website is http://www.
census.nationalarchives.ie/
RootsIreland offers a unique
database of more than 20 million Irish records such as Catholic and other church records of
baptisms, marriages and deaths.
This is a subscription service
www.rootsireland.ie
If you ever wanted to know the
origin of an Irish surname, you can
search for free at http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/
Unfortunately, I cannot cover every single ethnic group.
These sites may be helpful in
finding more about your own
family history:
ItalianGenealogy.com is the
leading resource for those who
undertake research into their
Italian Genealogy. The research is

Researching ancestors in Latin
America can be a challenge because it is a broad landscape which
covers more than a dozen countries.
FamilySearch has an informative
blog that can help you: https://familysearch.org/blog/en/researching-ancestors-latin-americapart-1/

informative and helpful. If you

Women of Rockaway:

HELEN TIMLIN-KILGALLEN OF OCEAN BLISS YOGA

By Katie McFadden

Who runs the peninsula? Women. A large number of local businesses and organizations are
owned and operated by females,
or female co-owners. And they
deserve recognition. As part of
an ongoing series, the Rockaway
Times is profiling local female entrepreneurs each week. This week
is Helen Timlin-Kilgallen, owner
of Ocean Bliss Yoga.
Breathe in, breathe out and
feel the stretch as you reach
above during your sun salutation as you greet the sun
above the bay shortly after it
rises. Ocean Bliss Yoga offers
the perfect view of Rockaways
surrounding natural beauty as
you center your mind and body
through various yoga practices. Helen Timlin-Kilgallen has
been bringing peace of mind
and body to the peninsula with
Ocean Bliss since 2009.
Ocean Bliss Yoga, located at
112-20 Beach Channel Drive,
offers yoga for everybody,
Kilgallen says. We offer all
different types of classes including Vinyasa, gentle, yin,
restorative, childrens yoga and
special workshops, she said.
Kilgallen teaches all of the different types of yoga herself, but
shes also joined by a staff that
includes Sarah Arikian, Lori
Dinneny, Denise Lee, Paulette
Mancuso and Cecilia Rudden.
Kilgallen also offers a yearly retreat to Menla Mountain with
Diana Treglia, in which students immerse themselves in
daily meditation, asana practice, dharma talks, chanting,
and vegetarian eating each
June.
Kilgallen says she started doing
yoga around 2000. I was doing
triathlons and competitions and
I needed a way to ground myself.
I needed something more than
just physical workouts. Yoga has
everything. Its a one stop shop
for physical, mental, spiritual
and emotional wellness, she
said.
She later found that it was
an important tool to use in the
workplace. From 2005 to 2009,

I was a substitute teacher for

District 75, which is for special
needs children. I had classes of
nonverbal autistic children and
I began to incorporate yoga into
the program. It was so successful
with the autistic population that
I decided to become certified
to teach yoga full time because
I knew it would be able to help
so many other people, Kilgallen
said. Theyre the ones that really
drew me in to teaching yoga.
Kilgallen became certified in
2009 and decided to bring the
practice to her hometown with
her own business. I wanted
to bring it here because this is

Helen demonstrating

where I lived and there wasnt

a yoga studio here. There were
gyms that offered yoga, but
there wasnt a space that was

didnt want a boss. I didnt want
anyone to tell me how to teach.
I teach from my heart, from my

if I could teach yoga classes,
when she wasnt using the studio for dance. Elaine didnt
know me, she just heard of me

Kilgallen says she find rewards

QueensRail is the New Ferry!

By Rick Horan

Maybe, just maybe, Rockaway

will unite around getting the old
Rockaway Beach Line back on
track just as we did for the ferry. After years of feeling like they
were pushing a train uphill, advocates are starting to feel a little
more love.
Thanks to the efforts of State
Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder,
with the support of State Senator
Joe Addabbo, there now appears
to be funding for a feasibility and
economic impact study for rebuilding this key rail link. The
study is expected to take place
next year. In the mean time we
must protect the existing 4-mile
Right-of-Way from the people
who want to turn it into a park.
Why rebuild the old Rockaway Beach line now known as
QueensRail? Simply that we will
be able to get from Rockaway
to Penn Station in as little as 50
minutes vs. the A trains 80 minutes. Thats hour faster each
way every day. You do the math.
The naysayers say, building
it will take too long. To those
people I say the same thing I told
my kids for years, the sooner you
get started the sooner it will be
finished. Heres another excuse
we hear all the time, Its too expensive. Lets face it, valuable
transportation
infrastructure
doesnt come cheap in NYC, especially on the public dime. But
getting it up and running sooner than later however will both

lower build costs and accelerate

the economic benefit. I predict
that the economic impact study
will prove that QueensRail is not
an expense but rather an investment for us and future generations. Shame on us for waiting
so long to rebuild it.
QueensRail also would be a
boon to JFK Airport users. It
would enhance the airport as
key business and job generator
by providing a quicker, more
convenient and less congested way to travel from midtown.
QueensRail, therefore, supports
Governor Cuomos Penn Station
and JFK Airport improvement
initiatives.
To make the leap from study to
reality we must follow a similar The proposed route

Governor Cuomo just anrecent examples of how representatives and communities aim nounced his support for the
to improve our long neglected LIRR Enhancement Project
which involves construction of a
transportation infrastructure:
third track along the existing two
tracks of the Main Line between
Floral Park and Hicksville. This
current bottleneck constrains rail
traffic and limits both economic
and community development.
The Right Track for Long Island
Coalition was formed to create
a partnership of major organizations, institutions, businesses
and individuals that support the
construction of a third track.
State Senator James Sanders Jr. introduced the Long Island Rail Road Fare Act, which
provides that trips between Far
Rockaway station and other lo-

cations in New York City are to

be included in the LIRRs weekend reduced fare program called
CityTicket.
Far Rockaway was is currently unfairly excluded from NYCs
discounted ($4.25/trip) weekend program because the train
passes through Nassau County.
DOT Commissioner Polly
Trottenberg recently expressed
her support for QueensRail.
The Queens Public Transit
Committee (www.qptc.org) was
founded a couple of years ago to
promote better transportation in
Queens They concluded that if
Rockaway was going to be successful in bringing the old Rockaway Beach Line back to life we
needed a focused coalition of
our own.
This decision led to the creation of QueensRail Corporation with the singular mission
of making QueensRail a reality.
Approval of its 501(c)3, not-forprofit status is expected in late
spring. At that time the organization will begin a high profile,
social media campaign to lead
the fight for better transportation
for Queens in general and Rockaway in particular. All Aboard!

Easter Celebrations
Sunday is Easter and there
is plenty going on for families to celebrate this weekend.
On Saturday, March 26,
Broad Channel kicks off the
fun with its annual Easter
Egg Hunt. The event, which
starts at noon at the BCAC
Memorial Field, will include
an egg hunt, plus cupcakes,
juice and other goodies, and
of course, a visit from the
Easter bunny.
This weekend, the new
kid store NiLu Kids opens
at 91-08A Rockaway Beach
Boulevard. To celebrate the
holiday, there will be Easter
arts and crafts projects for
kiddies, at just $5 each from
1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday
and Sunday.
On Easter Sunday, House
on the Rock Church will
have a special message held
on the boardwalk between
Beach 94th and Beach 95th

at 11 a.m. The service will

lead into a huge Easter egg
hunt. The free event will also
include live music and candy
bags will be given to everyone in attendance. At 1 p.m.,
the Community House (10119 Rockaway Beach Boulevard) will also hold a free
Easter Egg hunt along with a
visit by the Easter bunny.
Not forgetting the real
meaning of Easter, local
churches like St. Camillus,
St. Virgilius, St. Rose of Lima,
St. Francis de Sales and the
Breezy Point and Roxbury
churches of Blessed Trinity
Parish will hold services for
Good Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday.
Easter falls early this year.
Usually the spring Jewish
holiday or Passover falls
around the same time as
Easter, but Passover will not
begin until April 22 this year.

MMA Gets Assembly

Approval
After nearly a 20 year fight
with lawmakers, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will be legal
in New York State and will
fall under the jurisdiction of
the New York State Athletic Commission. The NYSAC
has 120 days to adopt the
necessary statutes to regulate the sport.
Governor George Pataki
banned MMA in 1997. There
have been many attempts to
legalize it since but it would
stall before coming to vote.
By 2016, New York was the
only state in the country
outlawing the popular sport.
Governor Cuomos expected signature to formally
to legalize MMA will allow
Madison Square Garden and
the Barclay Center and other
venues to showcase matches.
Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder was a proponent of the
bill and said passage of the
bill helped local businesses
like CROM Physical Culture
on Beach 92nd Street. Before
the bill was approved Goldfeder had said, Not only
does this deprive millions of
fans of the chance to see the

sport in their own backyard,

it also robs local businesses
of the economic boost that
the sport would bring to our
community. I will continue
to advocate for safe, legal
MMA matches in our state
during the 2016 legislative
session and I urge my colleagues to join me.
The safety aspect is another issue. The bill also regulates MMA on the amateur
level. Under previous law,
New York state officials did
not oversee amateur MMA,
which meant there were no
safety guidelines, such as
pre-fight physical examinations or ambulances and
physicians on site.
Chris Romulo of CROM
said, Regardless of how
long it took, all combat athletes should be looking forward to further building the
sport, the art and the culture of combat. Martial Arts
and Physical Culture saved
me as a young kid with no
aspirations, kept me off the
street, helped me become a
man, father, husband and a
son.

Local Wrestlers Return From State Championships

Four young wrestlers from
Rockaway have completed yet
another successful season after competing in both the USA
Wrestling NY State Championships, held at Sarah Lawrence
College in Bronxville, NY and the
NYWAY State Championships,
held at Onandoga Community
College in Syracuse, NY.
Eight-year-olds
Thomas
Martin and Owen Conti, nineyear-old Matty Martin and
11-year-old James Martin
have been training with the
Long Beach Gladiators Wres-

tling Club for three seasons

under the direction of Coach
Miguel Rodriguez. All four
boys were eligible for state
competitions after placing in
county and regional qualifying events.
The season finished on a
high note, as Owen, Matty and
James finished in first place
in the USAW Nassau County
Championship and Thomas
finished in third place. The
NYWAY Long Island regional qualifier saw all four boys
finish in second place. In
Statewide competition, Matty finished in third place in
the USA Wrestling NY State
Championships, Owen finished 5th in the NYWAY States
after a dramatic last second
pin and James took second
place in the NYWAY States
after battling a nationally
ranked wrestler in the 65 lb.
final. Top six finishers in the
state become eligible for national competition. The boys
will be taking a much-needed
break from training and are
looking forward to a summer
of surfing.

ST. CAMILLUS SPECIAL

ATHLETES GO SKIING
To end the midwinter recess,
the St. Camillus Special Athletes
traveled Windham Mountain for
a ski weekend. Christine Parchment and Rita and Flip Mullen did
an extraordinary job in organizing
every aspect of the weekend.
The athletes, their families and
friends began the weekend tubing down an icy slope. At times the
dark descent is scary, but so much
fun. A pizza dinner by the fireplace
concluded the evening. Bright and
early Saturday morning the athletes went to the Adaptive Sports
Ski Lodge where they had their
own instructor to assist in maneuvering the slopes. Our own Mary
Ellen Carroll was one of these instructors. Families and friends also
enjoyed a day of skiing.
Some of our athletes are skilled
and race every weekend for the
Windham Ski Team. As part of the

Miles Cup Races, Heather Huber

had a combined factored time of
1:28.36 while Jennifer Romero had
a time of 1:54.97 in the womens
division. Among the men, Patrick Carroll had a factored time of
1:09.83 and Terence Burke had a
time of 1:26.60.
After the day of skiing; dinner, a dance party and awards
followed. Helping serve the
food were some of the Mullen
grandchildren and the Parchment children. Medals were
awarded to the athletes as well
as the younger skiers who came
to show support. At the awards
ceremony, Barry Resnick made
opening remarks, Regina Moerdyk called names, KC Gray
bestowed the medals, Charlie
Brady smiled with the athletes
as Larry Gray took photos to record this wonderful event.
