PATIENT SAFETY IN MALAYSIA

Patient Safety in Malaysia started with the


establishment of Patient Safety Council Malaysia in
2003 chaired by the Director General of Health
Malaysia
Patient safety evolved tremendously for past few
years.
Various programs were developed following WHO
World Alliance for Patient Safety call to improve
patient safety.
Biggest
achievement
of
Malaysia
is
the
development of Malaysian Patient Safety Goals in

Patient engagement means patient is engaged in his/her own


health, own care and treatment
Requires close collaboration between patients and clinicians
In Malaysia, patient engagement is initially integrated as
part of patient safety program
In 2013, specific organisation/ movement was established to
facilitate patient engagement in improving patient safety
using patients to improve patient safety.

Formed following directive from Malaysian cabinet on 29th January 2003.


Functions:
Advise the honorable health minister on national patient safety policies,
strategies and action plans
Enhance implementation of patient safety strategies
Monitor and evaluate achievement of the Malaysian Patient Safety Goals and
take action at national level
Promote and facilitate national, regional and international collaboration in
patient safety.

Following this, PATIENTS For Patient Safety Malaysia
(PFPSM), voluntary organization was established.
Currently under Malaysian Society for Quality in
Health (MSQH) NGO / national accreditation body

PFPSM was launched by Honorary Minister Of Health


on 29th April 2014
PFPSM promotes partnership between patientshealthcare providers -consumers in enhancing patient
safety.

INTEGRATION OF PATIENT SAFETY IN CURRICULUM


Patient Safety Council Of Malaysia meeting
1/2014- on 13th January 2014 agreed to
implement WHO multi-professional patient safety
curriculum guide in:
Medical , pharmacy ,dental, allied health and
nursing undergraduate programmes
Housemanship training, Masters training
The objective is to introduce patient safety concept
and important patient safety issues at the earlier
stage of health care professionals training
Had meetings with Dean of Medical Schools, Dean
of Allied Health School, Postgraduate Masters
