Loss of innocence and the coming of age:

You can say that one has lost innocence when they are able to tell what is good and what is bad.
Losing of innocence doesnt mean you have done a bad thing. It means you understand the cruel
things that happen in the world. Before Adam and Eve sinned they could not tell what was
good and bad. They had no conscience. After they lost their innocence they were given this
conscience so that they would know when they have sinned, or know when others have sinned.

When we left the courthouse, Jem started to cry. His face was streaked with angry tears as we
made our way through the cheerful crowd. It aint right, he muttered, all the way to the corner
of the square where we found Atticus waiting for us.
Theyve done it before and they did it tonight and theyll do it again and when they do it seems
that only children weep.
Atticus handed Jem the box he had brought back. In it was a beautiful camellia flower. Jem
thought she had sent it to him to be mean, but really she was trying to say that she forgave him.
Jem burned the box, but he kept touching the flower petals all night.

Intolerance breeds injustice / which can be read is racism breeds injustice:

Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts
of mens hearts, Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her
mouth and screamed.
According to Miss Stephanie Crawford, however, Atticus was leaving the post office when Mr.
Ewell approached him, cursed him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him.

The importance of empathy and respect:

Atticus said you never really knew a man until you stand in his shoes. He was right.

Mockingbirds dont do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They dont eat up
peoples gardens; they dont do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. Thats why its a
sin to kill a mockingbird

Personal integrity and courage:

I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is
a man with a gun in his hand

It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars,
was the bravest man who ever lived.

The nature of evil:

Box 2 prove that the mockingbird is a symbol for Tom Robinson and Boo Radley:
Original mockingbird quote: Mockingbirds dont do one thing but make music for us to enjoy.
They dont eat up peoples gardens; they dont do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. Thats
why its a sin to kill a mockingbird
Tom Robinson shown as a mockingbird: Mr. Underwood simply figured it was a sin to kill cripples, be
they standing, sitting, or escaping. He likened Toms death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds
by hunters and children.
Boo Radley shown as a mockingbird (they say that turning Boo for killing Mr. Ewell to protect abused
children would be like killing a mockingbird): Tom: To take the one man whos done you and this town a
service and draggin him with his shy ways into the limelight is a sin.
Scout, Mr. Ewell fell on his knife. Can you possibly understand?
I hugged him and said, Yes,sir.

Talk about the original mockingbird quote. Quote it exactly (not the whole
thing):

Evidence

What are they saying about mockingbirds? What do they do? Do they ever
disturb people? Do they do good and nice things for us? Think about they sing
their hearts out to us and how this relates to Boo Radley. We will discuss the
techniques later.
Now compare this to the Tom Robinson quote. Quote it exactly.

We will discuss the techniques later. But think about the phrase senseless
slaughter of songbirds. What stands out and makes Radleys death sound more
tragic? Look at the letters.

(quote)
+ Explain

Now compare original quote to the one about Boo Radley:

We will discuss the techniques later. Think about they sing their hearts out to us
and how this relates to Boo Radley the one man whos done you and this town a
service. Also note how when they talk about killing mockingbirds as a sin, they also
say that turning boo Radley in is a sin.

Conclusio
n

To conclude, it has been proved that.

Box 3: find a passage that shows tension, annotate language features, and rewrite the passage to
reduce tension.
Ill tell you how to do this in tutoring.

Box 4: essay on whether mockingbird is suitable for modern audience.

You will do two point paragraphs (maybe three). One point will be on relationships and our
interactions with others.
Please read chapter 11 for this. Think about: how important are relationships and understanding
peoples struggles in your life? Have you ever regretted being mean to someone? This is
something that is relevant to all people whether born in 1600s or 2010.
The other point will be on loss of innocence and coming of age.
Go back to your loss of innocence and coming of age quotes. Everybody in the world has a
coming of age (unless die young), and learns more about the world as they get older. So think
about how these quotes could relate to anyone.
