Tutorial 6- Gp 2, 28-29 March, 2016 (Monday & Tuesday)
Members of P6. Group 2, Y01-Y05, IT01 & IT02. Tutorial gp are to conduct a 25 minute
presentation (for the whole sub-group) based on all the questions below during the tutorial
session. The other members of the class are encouraged to prepare for the tutorials and
participate in the discussion.
Singapore and Globalization
Question
Singapore is working towards becoming a global-city of distinction, which is essential for its
economic development. However, this goal also resulted in a series of social challenges.
Assess.
Presenters need to look at the following aspects:

What is Globalization and how has it affected the World in the last few decades?
Why is becoming a global city so important for Singapore?
What are the main obstacles Singapore faces in the goal of becoming a global city?
Based on the above, how can Singapore overcome the possible obstacles and negative
impacts to become a successful global city?

The Nation-State as a Global City
Question
Unlike most other global-cities, Singapore is both a global city and a nation-state at the same
time. Do your team felt that this dual identity is advantageous or an obstacle for Singapore in
becoming a global-city of distinction?
Team members need to look at the following aspects:
1. The concept of Globalization in the context of the 21st Century
2. The role of Globalization in Singapore Economic Development.
3. The advantages and obstacles to Singapore in its goal to become a global-city,
especially in balancing the dual identity.
4. The challenges in overcoming the problems to become a global-city of distinction
