ABOUT THE FILM

SYNOPSIS

THE CAST
The cast for Neighbor will be a combination of well known, talented
actors and actresses both from LA and the Bay Area. Here are three
of our exceptional performers.

BRUCE BEATTY
Larry camped out in the same alley every night. He always
kept to himself and never bothered anyone, until he saw an
injustice unfold right before his eyes.
He did everything in his power to stop it but trying to stop a
kidnapping almost cost him his life.
He was beaten down inches before death. With all the strength
he could muster, he picked himself up to hunt down the
perpetrator.
Everything within compelled him to take a stand, to right this
wrong and rescue a helpless child.
He never expected to uncover a hidden crime in a perfectly
landscaped suburban neighborhood.
Will Larrys story be accepted or twisted? Is he an
acceptable witness or possible suspect? Things are not
always what they seem.

Bruce Beatty, is an established character

actor for over thirty years. Hes had great
guest starring roles on Greys Anatomy,
House of Lies, and Glee. Most recently he
had a role in the Sundance breakout hit,
Dope (2015), and played Ice Cubes father
in Straight Outta Compton (2015). He is
the perfect fit to take the lead role of our
protagonist, Larry.

ANJELAH JOHNSON
Anjelah Johnson started out as an internet
sensation with a sketch about a Nail Salon
on Youtube video, which led to many stand
up and television opportunities. She has
starred in films such as Our Family Wedding
(2010), Enough Said (2013) with James
Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Drefus, and her
own stand up comedy show available for
streaming on Netflix.

DOVE MEIR
Originally from Philadelphia, Dove begun
his acting career in New York City. He had
recurring roles on N.C.I.S., Major Crimes, and
The Mindy Project, as well as USA networks
Dig. He was nominated for Best Actor in the
Burbank Film Festival for his leading roll in
the film Boots.

WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR

Appearances are not always what they seem. We easily make
judgments based on peoples exteriors. We dont always expect CEOs
to wear flip flops or criminals to wear white collars and ties. And we
might never expect a guy who sleeps in an alley to be the very one
who saves our life.
I wrote this film because I was surprised by the friendships I made
in unexpected places. I found allies, friends, and neighbors in
people who were different than me, people who had no place to call
home. I was impacted by the stories of people I might have written
off or overlooked. These stories of humanity, connection and justice,
touched me deeply and illuminated issues I often swept under the rug.
I wanted to write and direct this story, for my sophomore film project,
to bring light into a dark place: human trafficking. The stealing,
harboring, objectifying, and horrendous abuse of human beings,
(many who are young children and women), is an ugly reality.
Human trafficking is happening right under our noses, in our
beautifully landscaped, white collared, American neighborhoods. We
need to talk about it. And we can do something about it. We can bring
change if we are willing to take a stand. I am called to affect change
by telling stories. I hope this film starts conversations that lead to
actions, that lead to justice. I hope you will stand with me and see it
come to completion.

NOT FOR SALE (NFS)

3STRANDS GLOBAL

Reinvent, a program of NFS, is designed to prepare disconnected

youth (18-24) affected by trafficking, exploitation and related traumas
for work in the Bay Areas booming industries. After four weeks of
work-readiness training and life-skills coaching, graduates of the
program are placed in paid traineeships within Not For Sales network
of Bay Area businesses.
As a partner in Neighbor, Not For Sale endorses the project and
promotes it to increase the exposure of the movie and has provided
production team with original video footage of survivors of human
trafficking that will be used in the credits of the film. Not For Sale
has also allowed the team to attend the organizations events and
meet survivors in person to better understand the issue of human
trafficking. We are seeking more opportunities to support NFS,
especially with their trafficking survivors. Its these girls stories we
want to tell, that will prevent others from being victimized.

Through employment, education and engagement initiatives,

3Strands Global empowers a worldwide community to combat
human trafficking.
We have 100 t-shirts coming from our partner 3Strands Global. They
train and employ women in an at-risk area of Cambodia. We are
grateful for the work of 3 Strands and how they are working to put an
end to human trafficking. T-shirts will be available in March for $20.

CHRIS BETH,

DIRECTOR REDWOOD CITY

PARKS AND RECREATION

We love supporting the arts and projects like

Neighbor film because they are a huge way
to engage people intellectually on the issue
{human trafficking} and also touch people
on a deeper level in their hearts and soul.
Any way that brings awareness and helps
people engage with the issue, and make a
personal connection, is really important to the
entire movement.

BRIAN WO,

FELLOW OF THE NATIONAL CENTER

OF CRISIS MANAGEMENT

Many say It takes a village to raise a child;

This film reminds us that it takes our whole
community to protect our children.

WARREN DALE,

M.F.T. FELLOW OF THE NATIONAL

CENTER FOR CRISIS MANAGEMENT

THE AUDIENCE

Human trafficking is a sad reality that affects millions of people around

the world. In the United States the Department of Justice estimates
that every year 17,500 men, women and children become victims of
human trafficking. In fact, San Francisco is considered number 13th
among the highest child sex trafficking in the nation. We most likely
encounter victims of this crime every day in our lives with out even
realizing it.
One of the main objectives of Neighbor is to help create awareness
of this problem among the people in our local community, but also all
over the country. To do so, we are partnering with some of the biggest
anti human trafficking organizations, non-profit organizations, as well
as schools and arts associations in the Bay Area. This will allow the
film to reach an audience that is not necessarily film consumer. At
the same time, the movie will be distributed online and in different
film festivals which will allow the message of Neighbor to spread to
various film audiences.

San Francisco County.

THE MARKET
Some recent examples of short films that turned into feature films are:
By definition, a short film is any film, narrative, documentary or
experimental, that tells a complete story in no more than 15 minutes.
Short films have always been one of the preferred platforms for new
independent filmmakers to explore the medium and step into the
film industry. The nature of their format allows emerging directors
to develop creative ideas without the elevated costs of filmmaking.
In 2015 more than 60% of the films submitted to the Sundance Film
Festival were short films. In the past 10 years the festival had an
average of 49,497.5 attendees per year(1). The growing interest in
short film has led to creation of film festivals that exclusively for the
exhibition of short films like SF Shorts or LA Shorts Fest that screen
over 100 short films every year.
Short films are not regularly programmed to be screened on movie
theaters outside film festivals. However, thanks to online streaming
platforms like YouTube and Vimeo, short films have acquired an
important audience that consume these type of films on a regular
bases. Future Shorts, a YouTube channel dedicated entirely to the
streaming of independent short films, has over 263K subscribers and
the website Statsheep.com estimates that the number of subscribers
to this channel will increase by 14,365 by June 2016. Vimeo Staff
Picks video channel, which features a big amount of independent
short films, has over 191K subscribers. Online platforms are an ideal
distribution channel for short films because they allow filmmakers to
show their work to a broader audience with less or even no additional
costs.
In general terms, short films are not big sources of revenue for the
filmmaker, but they are often the starting point in the development
of very commercially successful feature films.

Whiplash (2013), by Damien Chazelle. The director

of the Academy Award wining feature film of the
same name was having a hard time getting funds
for his movie so he made his script into a short film
that he used in to get the money he needed. The
overwhelming success of the short film helped
Chazelle get the money that he needed and the
short film and the feature version of Whiplash
finally released into 2014.

Alive in Joburg (2005), by Neil Blomkamp. Filmed

in a documentary style this science fiction story
follows a group of aliens struggling to survive as
a marginalized culture in Johannesburg. The film
attracted the attention of producer Peter Jackson
who offered Blomkamp $30 million to turn his
short into a feature film. The result was District
9 (2009) one of the movies nominated for an
Academy Awards in the Best Picture Category in
2009.
Short Term 12 (2008), by Destin Daniel Cretton.
Short Term 12 was Crettons Masters Degree thesis
film. The film premiered in the Sundance Film
Festival in 2008 and won the Jury Prize in Short
Filmmaking. After the success of this short film
Cretton decided to turn the script into a feature
film also named Short Term 12, that premiere in
March 2013.
