IMPRESSIVE FIRST UP VICTORY
----------------------------------------------------------------------Sydney, NSW | The Sydney Blues took control right from
the start and never let go of their hold, winning 29-13 over
the Perth Cougars. Safety Mike Hodge set the ball rolling
when he jumped on a short route whilst Perth Quarterback
Charlie Moore was under pressure and Hodge's
momentum saw him stroll into the end zone for 7.
The Blues then controlled possession thanks
mainly to the run game and Dean Leatigaga who finished
with an impressive 93 yards. Off the back of this grinding
game the Blues kicked three field goals to go into halftime
up 16-0. "I thought we had a lot more balance this game
than we did in the past and that is what we are looking
for" said Coach Graeme Eadie. The Blues passed the ball
26 times and ran it 35 with most of those carries coming
late when the game was done.
Perth on the other hand were always looking for
big plays and that started with the onside kick at the
beginning of the game. "We wanted to try and gamble
early to take the crowd out of it. We trusted our Defense
and they did well when they did not work" said Jarrod
Crawford after the game.
Leatigaga was again involved in putting the game
out of reach of the Cougars when as is this fashion this
weekend he took a pass out of the back field to score. He
had plenty of work to do as he jin ked inside the coverage
and then fended off a desperate tackle by Joel Gilbert
before he raced away for a 53 yard score.
Perth kept on fighting and two late touchdowns
were always just consolations but well deserved. Sydney
were professional enough to keep putting points on the
board and two more Mike Williams field goals rounded at
the final score at 29-13.
