General Information
Climate
Shanghai experiences a wide range of temperatures. Spring temperatures vary between 4C/40F and
13C/55F. The summer months tend to be extremely hot and humid. Autumn is usually sunny and dry.
Winter months are often cold and rainy, with January being the coldest month of the year.
What to Wear
Known as the Paris of the Orient, Shanghai has long been known for fashion. The reality is that dress in
Shanghai is casual. July August are extremely hot so wear light comfortable clothing. Winters are mild
so leave your heavy wool clothing at home.
Security
The crime rate in China is low in relation to the US and Europe. Although
crimes against foreigners are uncommon, bag snatching and burglaries
are on the increase. You should make sure that your house or apartment
has good security. It is time consuming to replace passports, identity
papers, drivers licenses and other important documents, so keep them
well protected. Identification should be carried at all times. We encourage you to register at your consulate soon after you move to Shanghai so
the consulate will have a copy of your passport on file and can replace it
if necessary. The consulate will also assist registered citizens, in case of
emergency evacuation.

Tipping
Although tipping is becoming more common in places frequented
by foreigners, small change is usually sufficient. A 15% surcharge
is normally added to the bill in expensive and hotel restaurants. It
is not usual to tip in purely Chinese settings.
Electricity
The standard electrical current is 220 volts and 50 cycles. The
configuration of the plugs differs from one location to the next and
often even within the apartment or villa. Local stores sell adapters.
Drinking Water
Tap water is not drinkable in Shanghai so Landlords generally
provide a water dispenser. 19L bottles of purified or mineral water
can be delivered to your home.
Local Time
China has one time zone. Shanghai is eight hours ahead of GMT
(London) and thirteen hours of EST (New York) during wintertime
and respectively seven and twelve hours during summertime.
Weights and Measures
China has converted to the metric system but a domestic system is
also in use.

Chinese Etiquette
The rules of conduct within the Chinese culture remain an important aspect of daily life. The set rules and
formalities for every occasion are probably the most confusing to Westerners. By ensuring that no-one
loses face in any given situation, the methods of interaction at meals, meetings and during business
discussions, are preset, allowing for few surprises. Similarly when receiving guests they should be accorded deferential preference according to their status in the hierarchy. Departing guests should always
be accompanied to the door of the office.
Chinese Language
Shanghainese generally speak Mandarin (Putonghua) Chinese (the official language of the government)
and Shanghai dialect. While there are many different spoken dialects in China, there is only one written
language. A beginners course in Mandarin, whilst not essential, will certainly be useful.
Chinese Currency
The Chinese currency is called Renminbi (meaning Peoples Currency) and it is abbreviated as RMB. It is
denominated in yuan, referred to as kuai in everyday speech. The yuan is divided into ten jiao
(colloquially called mao). Each jiao is in turn divided into 10 fen. There are both paper notes and coins for
1 and 2 yuan.

IMMIGRATION
Visas
Most people enter China on a tourist visa that is later converted to a residence permit (also valid as multiple-entry visa) after obtaining their Work Permit. A tourist visa is only valid for 3-months and you will need
to leave the country (most people go to Hong Kong) in order to obtain another tourist visa if your residence
permit has not been processed during the 3-month period. After the residence permit is obtained, you may
apply for dependant permits/visas for your spouse and children.
Residence Permit & Multi-Entry Visa
Each expatriate residing in Shanghai for more than 3 months is required to obtain a residence permit (also
valid as multiple entry visa). You are legally required to carry your passport containing the residence
permit with you at all times. The residence permit must be renewed annually. The following documentation is required to obtain your residence permit:
Filled-out application form
Requisition letter for the PSB (Public Security Bureau)
Original passport
Photocopy of the first page of passport containing your
personal information
(2) Passport photos
Health-check certificate
Original work permit
Temporary residence permit
Photocopy of the first page of work permit containing
your personal information
Copy of your companys business license
Copy of your companys approval license
In order to apply for a residence permit for your family you should prepare the following documents:
Copy of your marriage certificate and birth certificates of children to prove kinship.
(2) Passport photos
Original Passport

These items should be taken to the Public Security Bureau on Wu Zhong Lu nr. 333. The telephone
number is 6357 6666 and the opening hours are 9:00 11:00 and 1:30 4:30, Monday - Friday.
Residence Registration
Upon arrival in China each person should register with the Public Security Bureau closest to his/her
(temporary) residence within 48 hours. In some cases receptionists of hotels and/or service apartments
can arrange the registration for you. You will receive a temporary residence permit upon registration.

BRINGING A PET
PRIOR TO DEPARTURE
Residence Permit
Before you import a pet into China the working spouse should have a residence permit (a sticker in your
passport also valid as multiple entry visa). There is a chance that the Customs officials will allow the
animal into the country before residency formalities are completed but this is taking a risk.
AIRLINE REQUIREMENTS
American carriers require advance notice that you are traveling with a pet. The pet needs to be transported in a pet carrier approved by the FAA. Small dogs and cats are usually permitted to travel in the
passenger cabin if the pet carrier can fit under the seat. Only one pet can travel in the passenger cabin
at any one time so reserve a place for your pet early. Check with your airline to determine health certificate requirements.
During the winter and summer months, it is advisable to check
with your air carrier if there are temperature travel restrictions for
your pets. Below or above certain temperatures some American
carriers restrict travel for larger pets traveling in the cargo hold of
the aircraft.
We understand that it may not be safe for pets to travel in the
lug-gage hold of Chinese airlines because in some cases they
are not pressurized. Check with your airline prior to departure.
CERTIFICATES
If you are planning to bring a pet to China you need to obtain the
following certificates:
Vaccination Certificate
This certifies that all shots are up to date. This certification can
be included in the health certificate. 3-Year rabies vaccinations
are not recognized in China. Vaccinations should be within 30
days of departure.
Health Certificate
A veterinarian in your home country should issue this certificate. There is no standard form for China so
your veterinarian should use the international certificate. This certificate should be issued no more than 30
days prior to your departure. Obtain multiple copies as you will also need copies for your airline.

FEES
The current fee is 600 RMB (approximately USD70) for cats and small dogs. Fees for larger dogs are
higher. Check with your moving company for the fees applicable to your pet. You may wish to arrange
for a representative from your moving company to meet you at the airport as the fees must be paid in
RMB upon arrival in China.
Pet Supplies
Cat litter, flea collars and some pet food is available in Shanghai. If your pet requires a special diet, you
should arrange for a sufficient supply to be sent with your air and/or sea shipments.

Upon Arrival in China
After arriving in China you should take your pet, fee and certificates to the Plant and Quarantine office at
the airport. This office is located between luggage collection and the exit. Ask your moving company to
notify this office in advance that you will be arriving with your pet to ensure that there is someone in the
office.
There is a 30 day quarantine period. In most cases it is requested that your pet will stay for this period at a
Chinese Government approved kennel, Jialiang k-9 Kennel in Pudong (address details are mentioned in
previous paragraph) is probably most suitable for this. They can also assist in arranging all the appropriate
paperwork for your pet prior to arrival in Shanghai.
Bring a First Aid Kit with you to China including antibiotics, worm medicine, rabies and distemper vaccine. Your veterinarian at home can advise you on what to bring. See our services section for the name
of a veterinarian who can treat your pet and provide annual vaccinations.
Exit from China
Within fifteen (15) days before leaving China, the pet-owner must go back to the Dong Zhi Wu Jian Yan
Suo and should bring the following along:
The dog or cat Vaccination Certificate (see entry requirements)
During the visit the pet will undergo examination. Once the dog or cat passes the physical exam, the
office issues a Certificate of Health. Please take the Certificate of Health to the airport, veterinarians at
the airport will inspect your papers and upon acceptance, release your pet for departure.

CHINESE CUSTOMS DINING OUT CHINESE STYLE

When invited to a Chinese dinner it is not necessary to bring a gift unless
the dinner is for a special reason, for example a birthday, in which a gift
should be brought.
It is polite for the host to order the food. Guests should not make any requests and should eat whatever the host orders.
It is usual for several meat, fish and vegetable courses to be served.
Soup and rice will be served toward the end of the meal.
Guests wait for the host to begin and if signaled to do so will help themselves. The piece of food closest is chosen. It is not polite to reach
across the table or stand up to reach other dishes even if the table is very
large. When your chopsticks touch a piece of food that piece must be
taken.
A serving spoon may be provided, if not chopsticks are used to place food into the bowl before eating.
Often a sauce will accompany a dish. Use chopsticks to dip the food into the sauce. If food has been
sampled do not dip again. Take one piece of food at a time and allow guests an equal share. It takes
time to be skilled with chopsticks to eat meat with bones. Bones may be removed from the mouth with
the help of chopsticks and placed on the plate or neatly on the table.
Do not take the last piece of food from the serving dish. It is a signal to the host that not enough food
has been ordered and that guests are still hungry. Even when the host insists, it should not be taken.
It is considered bad luck to turn whole fish (head and tail in tact) over, when serving.
Sometimes a chicken dish or a fish dish will arrive with the head on the serving plate. The head may
point to the guest of honor.
Chinese people do not usually use their hands for eating. There are a few exceptions to this rule including shrimps that need peeling. Shrimp skins are placed on the plate. Waiters will change the shrimp
course plates often and a communal finger bowl will be placed on the table. Sometimes wet napkins will
be passed around for cleaning hands.
Chinese guests may leave the table promptly after eating a meal; usually at 8:30. Follow the hosts lead. An
indication for the guests that the meal is close to its end
is when a fruit platter is served. Depending on the season this can be watermelon, apple or orange.
Allow the person who invited you to dinner to pay for the
meal.

CHINESE CUSTOMS - NAME CARDS

Name cards are essential to establish individual identities and credentials. They should include the
company name and position or title.
Both hands are used to present and accept cards, these should be printed in English and Chinese.
The cards should be placed on the meeting table in front of you.
When a name card is presented to you in a social setting, you should take a few moments to study the
card as a sign of respect.
Punctuality is expected and important.
Tea or coffee is offered to visitors and it is polite to accept even if unwanted. Visitors are escorted to
reception areas or elevators by their host.
Business entertaining is almost always in restaurants and hospitality should be returned.

WHAT TO BRING
It is difficult to describe what a person should bring because everybody has different things that are important to him or her. Nowadays most things can be found in Shanghai. However imported goods are in
most cases more expensive than locally produced products. Please dont forget to bring some personal
items as well that will make your new house feel like your home, like family pictures, favorite paintings,
special Christmas ornaments or your childs favorite books/videos.
The following guidelines will give you an idea of what is available, what is substantially more expensive
and what is more difficult to find in Shanghai.
Records and Paperwork
Bring any important records or paperwork that you may need. Do not bring the originals, but have certified
copies made in your country of origin.
Certified Copies
Marriage Certificate
Birth Certificate/Adoption Decree
Divorce Decree
Custody Documents for Children
Diplomas

Things To Do
One of the most important and time-consuming tasks when you move to a new location is the preparation of an inventory of your personal items. Be sure to make photocopies of all documents such as
passports, drivers licenses etc. Make additional copies of your checklist; keep one for yourself and
leave others with the appropriate people.
Inventory
Here are some things to consider when preparing your inventory:

1. Take photographs or a make a video of all your furniture. This is the best way to prove damages in
the event of a loss.

2. Your inventory should be very explicit (i.e. 12 breakfast knives, 12 dinner spoons etc.) for items being imported into China.
3. Make your inventory room by room.
4. Date the inventory and make several copies.
5. Have your valuables appraised by a qualified person.
6. Leave a copy of your inventory with a family member.
7. Record all bank account information (including credit card numbers) and leave a copy with a family
member.
Rent a safe deposit box.

Banking
Banking in China gets easier and easier. In Shanghai, ATMs
are almost on every corner of the main streets in downtown
area. You can use your foreign bank card, Chinese banks will
not charge anything extra for the transaction and you receive
the official exchange rate. Most foreign bank charge a small
transaction fee for each withdrawal made in China.

Insurance
When informing your insurance companies of your move,
check whether you are entitled to a refund for your car and
household insurance. Check whether they will insure your
goods in China and make sure your medical insurance includes emergency evacuation coverage. Insurance on personal items is available in China.

Will
If you have not prepared a will, now is a good time to do so. If you already have a will, you may want to
review it with your legal counsel. Consider appointing a legal guardian for your children and write a letter of instruction. Remember to stipulate any funeral arrangements and provide any details on organ
donation. Keep a copy for yourself and leave one with your legal counsel.

Packing Tips
Your designated moving company will arrive at
your home and takes control of the packing process. Arrange for young children to spend the day
away from the house with family or friends.
Young children not only are hard to keep track of,
but can also find the experience extremely unsettling.
Arrange for teenagers to spend some time with
friends during packing.
Colour code boxes according to the different
rooms.
Colour code items for air shipment vs. ocean
shipment.

Clearly mark all items that need to be packed

and those that are your hand luggage for on the
airplane.

Medical Care
Prevention is the best medicine. Be extra
careful of hygiene. Wash your hands before meals. Toilets can be primitive carry
your own tissues and moist towels. Toilets
in tourist hotels are usually the best and the
cleanest.
Its best to buy fruits and vegetables that
can be peeled, if this is not possible you can
alternatively wash your vegetables with a
special kind of dishwasher which is also suitable for fruit and vegetables and rinse thoroughly before eating.
Never drink tap water unless you are certain
it is safe to do so. Some of the hotels and
apartment complexes have water purifying
systems, but please check with the management before drinking it. Large 18 Liter Bottles of purified water are usually available
through the management of each housing
compound.

VACCINATIONS AND IMMUNIZATIONS

Whilst no vaccinations are compulsory to enter China, it is advisable to be immunized against poliomyelitis, tetanus, and typhoid. Immunization against Hepatitis A and B is strongly recommended as
is stressed below. Most people complete immunization prior to arriving in Shanghai; however immunization is possible upon arrival.
HEPATITIS A
Hepatitis A is a virus which usually causes acute illness when caught, from which it can take 6-12
weeks to recover. It is spread in a similar manner to typhoid and cholera, by contaminated water,
food (particularly shell fish) and poor hygiene.
HEPATITIS B
This is prevalent in Asia as a result of the local populations high incidence of carriers of the virus
that causes Hepatitis B. It is spread by contact with body fluids including saliva. The virus can live
for several days after leaving the body. In the West only certain groups in society are at risk of
Hepatitis B (medical workers, drug addicts, the sexually promiscuous, etc.) but the high carrier rate
in Asia puts everyone at risk. Vaccination against Hepatitis B consists of a series of 3 vaccinations,
which gives 5 or more years protection. This is strongly recommended for all people living or traveling in Asia and especially those who are planning to spend more than 12 months in China.

Malaria and Japanese Encephalitis

Although the incidence of Japanese encephalitis in Shanghai has
declined in recent years the best precaution is to avoid mosquito
bites. Malaria is not a problem in Shanghai, but it does exist in some
southern parts of China. Care should be taken to avoid mosquito
bites, especially in rural areas. The risk of mosquito bites is greatest
at dusk and at night so it is best to wear a repellent, or cover up well
with long sleeves. Perfume, after-shave and dark colored clothing
are said to be attractive to mosquitoes. Burning mosquito coils or
buying a mosquito net will keep mosquitoes away.
Respiratory Infections
Coughs, colds and sinus trouble are the most common ailments, especially during the winter. People with asthma and/or other chronic
chest conditions such as bronchitis may have increased difficulties in
China.

HOUSING
In Shanghai you have the following styles of housing:
New Villas
These are fully furnished and they provide all services, including gardening, housekeeping and
maintenance. Most provide sports facilities, a clubhouse and a shuttle bus to major expat shopping
areas.
Older Villas
These are very difficult to find and much sought
after. They are usually near the City center and
were built between 1920 and 1940. They offer a lot
of charm, but they also require a great deal of

Full Service Luxury Apartments

There are several of these developments in Shanghai. Foreign developers or joint venture companies
generally build these. Most offer hotel style service
including housekeeping, fitness centers and concierge services.
Standard Apartments
These offer basic expat style housing. Usually they
do have a clubhouse with swimming pool and/or
other fitness facilities.
Lane Housing
Chinese Lane Housing is similar to townhouses in the US. You will probably
be the only foreigner in your compound, but they offer a taste of the local culture that you will not find in any other style of housing. Maintenance will also
be an issue.

LEASING YOUR NEW HOME

After you have selected your new home you will need to consider the following points before we approach the Landlord with an offer on your behalf. These points will play an important part in negotiations with the Landlord.
What renovations need to be completed?
Generally Landlords will repaint the walls, refinish the floors, and inspect electrical circuits
and plumbing fixtures. If the apartment does not include an oven, the Landlord will usually
agree to install one.
What electrical appliances do you require?
Generally Landlords will provide two television sets and one DVD-player. Standard kitchen
appliances include a refrigerator, washing machine, dryer and microwave. Dishwashers are
available in most villas, but many apartments do not offer them.
Tap water is not recommended for drinking so you will need to request a water machine.
Most larger compounds offer several Western TV channels. However it is recommended to
check this and if it is not provided you can ask the landlord to install a satellite receiver.
How many telephone lines do you require?
Most residences provide only one telephone line. A second one is usually available upon
request, but it may take 30 days for the line to be connected.
Most landlords provide an ADSL connection.
The term of the lease.
One year Tenancy Agreements are most common.
The rental you are willing to pay.

This clause enables you or your employer to break the lease after a set period of time. Most Landlords
are willing to include this clause, however the monthly rental will be slightly higher.
Our property agents are all experienced negotiators who understand current market conditions and will
work on your behalf to achieve the best possible lease terms.
After a verbal agreement on the terms has been reached, an Offer Letter detailing all of the major terms
that will be included in the Tenancy Agreement is sent to the Landlord and your company. After both
parties have agreed on the terms of the Offer Letter, your company pays a deposit (usually in the
amount of 2 months rental) to the Landlord. In many cases the property will not be taken off the market
until the deposit has been paid. Therefore once you have made your decision and the terms have been
agreed to, it is important to for the deposit to be made as soon as possible.
The lease terms will be written in English and Chinese. Our office and your company will review the final agreement. Under Chinese law, the Chinese version is the official version of the lease and the one
that will be relied on in the event of a dispute. The lease will be signed and chopped by your company
and the Landlord. Due to local tax requirements, your company will retain the signed copy.

MOVING IN TO YOUR NEW HOME

Prior to your arrival, our property agent will inspect the
property to ensure that all of your requests have been
taken care of and that all appliances are in good working order. Your home will be handed over to you on
the lease start date. The Landlords representative will
meet you as will our property agent when you move in.
At this time we will ask you to confirm that all renovations have been completed to your satisfaction. The
Landlords representative will give you the keys to your
new home, read the utility meters and also make a list
of any defects. We will also check the furniture list.
RENTERS INSURANCE
Landlords generally insure the common areas and the building structures. Rental insurance is available
from several companies in Shanghai. See our Shopping/Services section for names and telephone
numbers.

ANTIQUES
Antique furniture shopping is a major pass time among the expatriate community in Shanghai. You will
find an amazing selection in the various shops and warehouses in the city. We advise you to visit a few
different shops before purchasing so that you can get a sense of the style and variety of furniture and
craftsmanship they carry.
Bargaining is part of buying antiques, especially in the street markets. There are lots of great bargains but
be aware of fakes, there are lots around.
If you plan to collect Chinese antiques you should understand the current laws regarding the export of
antiques from China. Any item more than 40 years old will need to have a red seal before it can be
exported. The red seal is your guarantee that you can take your purchase out of China. Keep all purchase
receipts. Red seals can be affixed and appraisals carried out (for a fee) at the Cultural Relics Bureau, prior
to leaving China. You can arrange for an inspector to inspect your purchases and advise which articles
need seals. The inspector can fix seals as appropriate. Many people prefer to have the seals affixed
during the course of their stay rather than during the busy period just prior to departure. Those who already own Asian antiques should check to make sure they will not have any problems exporting them at
the end of their assignment. Anything over 100 years old is considered to be an antique by the Chinese
government and therefore, may be restricted from
leaving the country.

FOOD
The availability of Western style goods is good. However supplies can be erratic
with some items appearing in plentiful quantities one week and not available the
next. If there is something you especially want, it is best to buy it when you see it.
Street market vendors sell meat, fish, eggs, fruit and vegetables. Meat is substandard quality and not kept in a refrigerated environment. Fruit and vegetables
are quite good and safe to eat.

POSTAL SERVICES
All of the major hotels in Shanghai sell stamps and will mail letters and postcards on your behalf. Technically, only Post Office issued envelopes are accepted for mailing domestically and internationally however, as long as you are not a business they will generally accept your envelopes. Approved envelopes
have red boxes in the upper left-hand corner for the postal code. Envelopes are on sale at all post offices.
The postal staff will weigh your parcel and give you the necessary stamps. Glue them to your package as
they are not pre-glued. Glue is available on one of the counters, but it is usually dried out so you may wish
to bring your own glue stick.
The Postal and Telecommunications Bureau in the lower level of the retail plaza at Shanghai Center is
staffed with English speaking personnel.

There are plenty of sidewalks where pedestrians can stroll at leisure. Watch out for loose tiles which are
difficult to see at night. Crossing the road like a local take practice. A pedestrian crossing offers no safety;
cars will not stop for you. Try to cross at traffic lights, remembering that traffic can turn right at any time
regardless of a red light.
Metro
There is two Metro lines and one light rail line. The underground train is very efficient and inexpensive but
gets very crowded especially at weekends. The cost is 3 to 6 RMB. Some of the main stops are listed
below.

Taxis are plentiful and provide an inexpensive means of transportation. All taxi drivers will provide a
receipt if requested. Usually taxi drivers do not speak English so be sure to have your destination written
in Chinese. It is also helpful to have a Chinese and English map.

Car/Van With Driver

Rental of a car or van with a driver is available at all major hotels through the concierge. You can also
make arrangements through the taxi service companies if you are able to speak Chinese.

DRIVING IN CHINA
Foreign drivers usually need to modify their driving habits in China. The traffic is heavily congested and
many of the local drivers are inexperienced. Cyclists and Pedestrians are generally undisciplined and
often ignore traffic lights. The best way to avoid accidents is to drive slowly and defensively.
In the event of a traffic accident involving personal injury, Chinese law requires the following:
Injured people should be immediately taken to the hospital
The scene of the accident should be preserved and the police should be called. Those involved
should wait at the scene of the accident until the police arrive
If an accident occurs and there is no personal injury the parties may agree amongst themselves at to the
cost of the damages and settle the case themselves on the spot. This course of action may jeopardize any
insurance claims.
License plate restrictions to city areas.
Be aware of traffic restrictions for certain license plates. Certain plates may not go into the city centre
during certain days or hours.

accidents must be reported in writing within 48 hours to the insurance company to maintain the validity of
the policy and ensure that the insurance company accepts the responsibility of the claim.

Annual premiums are inexpensive,

around 12,000 RMB annually for both
damage and third party liability. The
TPL portion, (mandatory) is about 500
RMB per year and covers up to 100,000
RMB, which is not enough if you have a
serious accident.

Both PICC and CPIC Insurance will send a representative to your home of office if you have a claim, you
do not need to go to their office. You need to have proof of ownership, passport, residence visa (green
book) and legal proof of proper import of car and registration.

Most automobile policies in Shanghai only have cover for US$60,000 (RMB 500,000) sometimes even
less. If an accident happens, this US$60,000 is to pay for any damages to other vehicles or property, any
injury to third parties and your court costs. AIA provides a policy that will increase the cover from
US$60,000 to US$900,000 for an annual premium of RMB 1,000 for a sedan.

HIRING A MAID (Aiyi)

Many expatriate families employ an ayi while they are living in Shanghai.
While you may not have enjoyed this service back home, it is certainly a great
help in Shanghai. Finding an English speaking aiyi is not always possible, but
if you are willing to work with the person, you will find even a non-English
speaking person is a great help. It is the best to find one who has previously
worked for a foreigner. The best way to find a good one is through word of
mouth. It is important to get a reference from the previous employer. It is
important to remember that many of our household appliances are not common in a Chinese home (i.e. a dishwasher) so you may need to explain how to
use them. To enjoy the benefit of an aiyi, it is very important to instruct her in
your way of doing things. Do not presume that she will know. For example, in
Chinese households dishes are washed in cold water, often without soap, and
dried with a damp towel.
Diplomatic Service Bureau
Technically diplomatic personnel are required to hire their aiyis through this
agency, however many recruit their own staff.

employment in foreign households. The YMCA charges a referral fee of RMB 200 (approximately

at least 3 days holiday for Chinese New Year and possibly the holidays of the country of the employer.

BABY-SITTERS
