EFFECT OF RECESSION-

TATA Motors to lay off 3,000 at Pune unit

Officials at TATA Motors’ Pune factory as saying that the number of temporary staff set
to lose jobs range from 1,000 to 3,000 workers.

TATA Motors did not confirm the exact number of job cuts at the Pune plant, only said
that it was a common practice in the automobile industry to engage temporary staff when
required. A spokesman said that “Like other companies in the automobile industry,
TATA Motors engages temporary workmen in manufacturing by definition on temporary
assignment based on requirement and they are disengaged after the completion of the
specific job or time period.”

The spokesman said that this engagement of individuals on temporary assignments and
their disengagement is a continuous process. We maintain databases of such individuals
and engagement is from these pools. As and when permanent positions open up, such
temporary workmen are absorbed. Spokesman said that “The block closures that the
company has taken so far have to be seen in the current context of the automobile
industry. TATA Motors has taken such limited period block closures at its commercial
vehicles facilities at Jamshedpur, Lucknow and Pune. The sole objective is to match
production with demand and avoid unnecessary build up of inventory in the company or
with the company’s dealers.”
Mr Sujit Patil President of TATA Motors Employees Union at the Pune factory said that
the workers losing jobs were on 7 month contracts and some of them had left on their
own, while some were fired over a month ago. Workers said that production levels are
usually low in December because of model changes, but this year, it has been adversely
affected by the economic slowdown which has hurt sales.

Tata Motors plans to shut down one plant

of JLR, rules off retrenchment
Fifteen months after Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the automobile

company is restructuring its UK manufacturing

facilities in a bid to cut costs and improve its financial health.

Tata Motors has decided to close down either its Castle Bromwich facility or its plant in
Solihull in West Midlands by 2015 as part of its new business plan that would enable JLR
get back on its feet. It intends to transfer the entire production to one site in West
Midlands. Tata Motors didn't reveal where it intends to consolidate its operations but said
a decision on which plant to shut down would be taken next year.

JLR's other unit is located at Halewood in Merseyside. The announcement has irked JLR
employees and they are opposing the company's plan. On JLR's part, the management has
said there won't be compulsory redundancies. The Land Rover unit in Solihull has 5,000
employees, while the Castle Bromwich-unit employs 2,000 people. Capacities at the three
facilities have been cut down in line with reduced market demand. Hit hard by recession,
JLR reported a loss of £64 million during the first quarter of FY10.

The new plan, aided by KPMG and Roland Berger, includes measures like introduction
of better and improved models--like lightweight sedans, hybrids and electric cars--axing
manufacturing units, pension restructuring and a shift in its sourcing model to low-cost
countries. These initiatives, JLR says, would help it see through the next 12-18 months as
markets recover.
