READING
Read the interviews quickly. Match each interview to a picture.

1 I started racing BMX bikes at five. My parents

hated it so, at 16, I did other sports like tennis and
football. But I loved danger. I finally went back to
biking at 20. When I started, I had lots of injuries. I
had broken bones, cuts and bruises and I cracked
a rib. Then I learnt how to fall and how to avoid
injury. I love the adrenalin rush theres nothing like
that feeling.
2 First, my parents gave me a pair of roller skates.
Then they saved up to buy me inline skates. At 16,
I started competing. I just loved the sport. I hate it
when guys say girls cant do things thats what
pushes me to be better. I want to show that girls
can do anything they want to. But then I got a
sprained knee. That injury usually takes about six
weeks to get better.

a) Paula Carrera, surfer

10

15

b) Gary Lansdowne,
BMX biker

3 I started at 20, four years ago. Its really the sport for me. The
thrill of danger stops time and makes every colour seem
brighter. In the air, I really feel alive! The adrenalin rush is so
exciting, you just dont know until you try. It stays with you for
life. Im lucky, I never get any injuries. My mom doesnt like it at
all. She comes to shows but she never watches me jump.
4 I first tried surfing in Australia, when I was 15. My parents were
worried. They thought surfing was dangerous. For me, danger
was thrilling! When I got home, I started riding waves every day
at a beach near my house. My parents finally agreed that
surfing was OK for girls. Now they find it exciting, too. Everyone
growing up wants to do things. If you do something you love,
thats when youre a happy person.

B Read the interviews again.

1 Answer the questions for each person.
a) When did you start your sport?
b) What do your parents think of it?
c) Do you ever get sports injuries?
d) Why do you do it?
2 What did Gary Lansdowne do when he
was: a) 5
b) 16
c) 20?
3 Write four sentences about Gary, using:
a) First
b) Then
c) Finally
4 Write sentences like the sentences in 3
for another athlete.
C Compare your ideas with a partner.
1 Which interview did you find most
interesting? Why?
2 Which sport do you think is most
difficult? Which is most dangerous?
3 What other questions would you like to
ask the athletes?

c) Francine
OReilly,
inline skater

d) Juan
Julia, skydiver

Why not quiz the coach? The coach gives great advice!

Dear Coach,
I went skateboarding
and fell on my knee. It
really hurts. What can I
do?
Boardster, 18

Hi Coach,
I was inline skating with
my friend when she fell
and sprained her ankle
really badly. Please tell
me what to do if it ever
happens again.
Lynn, 17

Dear Boardster,
,
Most injuries happen because the athletes wore NO protection! So, don t forget
your knee pads and wrist guards! For now, R.I.C.E. is the answer.
R - REST. Stay off the knee as much as possible.
I - ICE. Put ice around the knee to stop it swelling up.
C - COMPRESS. Put a bandage around the knee to support it.
E - ELEVATE. Lie down, put your leg high up on a cushion.

Dear Lynn,
,
First, don t panic. Here are some
First Aid tips for sports injuries:
1 Help your friend to sit down.
2 Remember R.I.C.E.
3 Use your mobile phone
to ring Emergency
Services.
4 Say where you are and
what the problem is.
Ask for an ambulance.
5 Keep your friend warm.

Sprained ankle

A Find words and phrases in the text which mean:

1 something that protects your wrist
2 dont stand on it
3 something cold to put on an injury
4 something soft to put under your leg
5 a car that takes you to hospital
6 a number to ring if theres an accident
B Read the letters again. Put 4 for things to
do and 6 for things to avoid if someone has
an injury.
1 panic
2 ring for an ambulance
3 put ice on a sprained knee
4 keep an injured person warm
5 walk with a sprained knee
6 bandage an injured leg

PORTFOLIO WRITING

or her about a sport experience that you had. Did
you enjoy it? Why or why not? Was it dangerous?
Did you get injured?
