Dear KIPP NYC Families,
We hope all is well. It was
so great seeing so many of
you at report card meetings
this week. Between Regents
Exams and trips to China
and Puerto Rico, this is sure
to be an exciting Spring at
KIPP NYC College Prep
High School.
I‟m writing today to pro-
vide you with a brief update
on our search for a perma-
nent home for our high
school. As you may know,
we are excited about the
possibility of Choir Acad-
emy being the permanent
home for KIPP NYC Col-
lege Prep. Choir Academy
is located on 127th and
Madison Avenue in Harlem.
As soon as we have the final
dates for the CEC hearing
and the PEP vote, we will

As we‟ve spoken about at
our parent meetings, for
Choir to be the type of per-
manent facility our high
school needs, it is going to
require a year‟s worth of
renovations. As a result,
for the 2010-11 school
year, KIPP NYC College
Prep will co-locate with
KIPP Academy Elementary
School in our brand new
building in Mott Haven
Village in the Bronx (right
behind KIPP Academy).
We did an exhaustive search
for alternatives and this is
by far and away the best
option available to us. This
building is easily accessible
by the 2, 4, 5, B, and D
trains and the BX 6 and BX
19 buses.
We‟ve been assured and do
believe that Choir will be
ready for our high school by nwebb@kippnyc.org) or me

are going to do everything
we absolutely can to make
sure this happens. Huge
thanks and respect to all of
the KIPP NYC staff, stu-
dents, and parents for the
collective spirit and charac-
ter that is going to make this
all possible. The last 15
years have proved to us

who you are with is always
more important than where
you are located. As we say,

through two more units be-

the afternoon of June 16th.
The first is a survey of the
most important principle in
biology: evolution. We will
be observing the remarkable
diversity of organisms on
Earth to understand how
natural selection and
evolution led them to develop
characteristics that allowed
them to survive in their envi-
ronments. In the final unit,
we will be studying ecology--
the relationship of organisms
with each other and their en-
vironment. Much of this unit
will be focused on under-
standing the complex ways
that humans interact with the
natural world and affect the
future of the planet.

This month, students of the
Visual Arts “Authentic Connec-
tions Program” designed bro-
chures in an effort to persuade
readers to explore extreme en-
vironments--some as subtle as
an iceberg and others as baffling
as a parallel universe. Through
this work, students found joy in
using art as the medium through
which they could explore these
environments.
Students set out on this journey
with the intention of illuminat-
ing the mystique of these habi-
tats. The criteria was simple--
be silly, but factual. Ultimately,
the drive and passion students
put into designing their bro-

In April we have been studying the
history and geography of Africa.
Students learned about the em-
pires in west Africa that were built
on the gold-salt trade; as well as
about the civilizations of Nubia,
Ethiopia, and the Swahili coast.
Every student created a topog-
raphical map of the continent and
took their unit assessment.
One of the tasks students were
required to complete this unit was
to write a poem “from the per-
spective of a person living in one
of the climate and vegetation
zones of Africa and interacting
with the environment.”
