Telemedicine is “medicine at distance” and regards the interactive transmission of health

data, signals and biomedical images by means of ICT (Information and Communication
Technologies). The exchange of clinical information between operators and health
structures is spreading rapidly, in order to provide better and more rapid support to medical
EMMIT@ssociation
diagnosis and consulting at distance, or to avoid hospitalisation and unnecessary
treatments.
The aim of the fourth edition of this Summer School is to provide knowledge, instruments
EURO-MEDITERRANEAN
and methodology to participants (researchers, ICT professionals, students, doctors and MEDICAL INFORMATICS and TELEMEDICINE
health operators) of the Mediterranean Area and Developing Countries.
During the school, methodologies and techniques for medical database and health/hospital
information system management and privacy, security and interoperability aspects and
(standard protocols and methods) will be treated. In particular, the course will focus on
telemedicine systems and applications, such as teleconsulting and telediagnosis systems
between hospitals and telemonitoring and telecare services between health structures and
patients, even at home (telehomecare).
By means of telecommunications systems based on advanced TLC infrastructures (i.e.
HDSL, broadband, WiFi, satellite, etc.) that will cover the entire Mediterranean area and International Institute of Tele-Medicine
other countries in the world, it is now possible to start telemedicine services. Moreover,
Internet diffusion permits the access to specific knowledge of excellence clinical centres
even from remote countries, in order to deliver better health care to patients. Furthermore,
by means of the development of web sites and portals it is possible to put clinical
in cooperation with
information, protocols, guide lines, medical literature and ontologies online, useful to Hospital of Mazara del Vallo, Region of Sicily
continue education and to better support health treatments.
Students, researchers, ICT professionals and health operators of public and private
institutions (hospitals, governmental and regional health authorities, universities,
biomedical research centres, ICT companies), in particular from Mediterranean Countries,
Euro-Mediterranean Summer School
should attend this Summer School. It is structured in a theory part and exercises with
software dedicated to sectors treated during the course. The language is English. of Telemedicine
