Tympanic thermometers, detect infrared energy emanating from the ear canal and tympanic
membrane. The tympanic membrane was initially adopted as a measurement site because its
blood supply from the internal carotid artery was thought to reflect the temperature at the
hypothalamus, which regulates body temperature. The thermometer probe, which is not in
contact with the tympanic membrane, contains optical sensors, usually thermopiles that can
detect infrared emissions. Temporal Artery thermometer measure infrared emission from the
temporal artery, it is held just above the skin surface of the forehead and use a tracking light to
indicate the measurement area. As this type of thermometer can be used to measure the
