SIM-Suite Models |AROM-SIM

Create an accurate, detailed model of your aromatics complex.
AROM-SIM includes two specialty reactor models for Aromatics processing. The Aromatics
Transalkylation unit models Tatoray, Toray, STDP, Px Plus, and other Aromatics Transalkylation
processes.
The Xylene Isomerisation unit models transalkylation and Ethyl Benzene dealkylation-based
technologies including Isomar, Xymax, Oparis and other Xylene Isomerisation processes.
Each features:
Rigorous Plug Flow Reactor Kinetics
Reversible and Irreversible Reactions
Rigorous Thermodynamics
Option to Input or Calculate the Temperature Profile

Effluent separation systems are set up using standard Petro-SIM unit operations to give you
maximum flexibility. They can be combined in a flowsheet with other unit operations within the
aromatics complex and beyond.
AROM-SIM packages the key aromatics reaction systems of xylene isomerisation and
transalkylation within a single software modelling solution.

AROM-SIM

The KBC SIM Suite Model for Xylene Isomerisation and Aromatics
Transalkylation
At the heart of aromatics plants are reactors that are governed by complex kinetics. KBC
packages the key aromatics reaction systems of xylene isomerisation and transalkylation
within a software modelling solution, AROM-SIM.
The isomerisation of C8 aromatics into paraxylene is performed using the AROM-SIM Xylene
Isomerisation reactor model. It can model technologies such as Isomar, XyMax, and
Oparis among other licensor technologies. The model includes both mechanisms for
transalkylation of ethylbenzene (EB) to xylenes and dealkylation of EB to benzene.
Transalkylation processes are modelled with the Aromatics Transalkylation reactor model. This
model is capable of emulating all commercial transalkylation processes such as Tatoray,
THDA, and PX-Plus as well as TransPlus, PxMax among other licensor technologies. The
model includes kinetic reactions for dealkylation, toluene disproportionation and C9/C10
aromatics transalkylation, plus the many additional reactions that take place.

BENEFITS
Select Operating Targets determine how to maximise the amount of paraxylene and the
effect of ethylbenzene conversion on xylene isomerisation; control the amount and quality of
recycle
Evaluate New Feedstocks or Upstream Operations establish the effects of a new feed on
product qualities and yields, such as how a change in feed naphthenes may affect the
process, or determine the best feedstocks to the transalkylation unit
Generate LP Submodels determine and generate vectors needed in the linear program
(LP) to model the incremental yields for different feeds and operating conditions
Debottleneck calculate the economic effects of increasing the Hydrogen to hydrocarbon
ratio and the effects of changing reactor pressures or conversion levels
Train - bring engineers and operators up to speed through a series of simulation runs to
evaluate cause-and-effect results
Design - establish the best configuration for a new facility

FEATURES
Kinetic model consisting of primary and side reaction equations for isomerisation and
transalkylation
Linear or weighted distribution of energy use along the reactor
Auto-tuning or manual tuning capability
Detailed compositional model output with stream properties
Case studies and optimisation capabilities to determine maximum performance
Easy to use LP Data Utility to create LP shift vectors and submodels
Integration with other refinery units using Petro-SIM, to model interaction between these
units, reformers, and other key operations
For specified feeds, operating conditions, and constraints, the program determines
resulting product flows and compositions as well as overall unit operating economics.
