How to become a Cambridge Examiner

If you are qualified in teaching English and have relevant

teaching experience, there may be opportunities for you as
a Cambridge examiner

Cambridge English Language Assessment has an international reputation for excellence, reliability
and fairness in language assessment and this reputation depends on the high quality and
professionalism of the Cambridge examiners. Thousands of people work for Cambridge English
Language Assessment as examiners, both in the UK and in countries around the world.
How to become an examiner
In the UK
All Cambridge English written exam papers are currently marked in the UK. If you are UK-based
and interested in becoming an examiner for either the Speaking or Writing tests, there may be
opportunities for you to work with us.
Outside the UK
If you are not based in the UK, our international exam centres employ Speaking examiners for the
Speaking part of many of our exams.
Speaking examiners
Speaking examiners are required to undertake examining at centres locally or at least within a 60mile radius of their home address. Assignments normally take place during morning, afternoon and
evening sessions from Monday to Friday, and morning and afternoon sessions at weekends.
Sessions take place throughout the year but peak in May/June and November/December.
Please do not apply for Speaking test examining work unless you are reasonably available to
undertake assignments during the week, in the evenings and on some Saturdays. Speaking test
examiners will not be asked to undertake more than two sessions a day.
Writing examiners
The majority of Cambridge English Writing tests are marked using the online marking system,
Scoris, where you are given access to scripts to mark online. If you would like to know more
about this and want to check if your computer meets the minimum system specification, then

What are the requirements?

You can apply to become an examiner if you have:
education to first degree level or equivalent
and/or
a recognised qualification in teaching English as a foreign language
plus
proof of substantial, relevant, recent teaching experience
proof of overall language proficiency relevant to the examination level.
N.B. If you can demonstrate considerable relevant teaching experience supported by positive
references, you may be exempt either from the formal teaching qualifications or from the first
degree/equivalence requirement (but not both).
The induction process
Before you can do any live examining, you will be invited to complete Induction, Training, and
Certification of Procedure and Assessment modules. These Quality Assurance (QA) modules may
be delivered by online self-access, by telephone and/or via face-to-face meetings.
Invitations to take part in QA modules and any future deployment as an examiner are not
guaranteed and are issued as and when examining opportunities arise. If we are not able to use
your services immediately, we will email you periodically to ask if you still wish us to keep your
details as a possible examiner.
