About Grow It Green Morristown

Grow It Green Morristown works to create sustainable farms and
gardens that provide equal access to fresh, local food and educate
communities through programs focused on healthy eating and
environmental stewardship.
By engaging and educating local residents, we aim to be a catalyst
for positive change in Morristown, helping to create a sustainable
healthy community.
We accomplish these goals through our two major projects, the
Early Street Community Garden and the Urban Farm at
Lafayette.
Along with the work we do at the Early Street Community Garden
and Urban Farm, we collaborate with multiple partner organizations
to improve access and awareness of healthy food. Our work
includes:
Assisting other local organizations and schools with establishing
their own garden spaces.
Providing educational opportunities for school children,
local groups, and individuals.
Creating opportunities for people to volunteer and make
meaningful contributions to the health of their community.

Why Were Here

From the beginning, Grow It Green Morristown has been propelled
by a mission to create a healthier, happier community. We feel it is
important to:
Help community members grow their own food by providing
them with the skills and the space they need to succeed.
Get children excited about organically grown produce and healthy
eating.
Have green spaces available for community members to enjoy.
Build community spaces that provide environmental benefits.
Create a sense of community among diverse community
members.
Promote equal access to fresh, local food.
Create a culture of health to address obesity in children and adults
in Morris County.
Provide inspiring employment opportunities for local youth.
Reconnect families to how their food is grown.
Provide opportunities for youth to learn about sustainable
agriculture in an urban environment.

Rebuilding the
Early Street Community Garden
17 Early Street Morristown
Once a littered and vacant lot, the Early Street Community
Garden will soon provide 94 families of all ages and backgrounds
with the ability to grow their own food. Once complete, it will be
a model of sustainability for community gardens nationwide.

Build boardwalk over rain garden
Purchase soil and compost
Build a community shed
Set up water spigots
Install picnic tables
Build a green street
Hold an endowment for maintenance

31 Hazel St, Morristown

The Urban Farm is New Jerseys largest public school garden,

providing educational opportunities for the 5,200 school children of
the Morris School District, as well as area colleges and local
community members.
This one-acre property creates opportunities for children and adults
to grow and experience local, chemical-free food. Much of the food
grown is donated to local soup kitchens and Morristown High
School. In 2015 alone, we donated 4,000 lbs of food to community
food partners.

Honoring a Founder
Myra Bowie-McCready
Myra,
Remember that March day in 2009
when the three of us went for a drive
and pulled up in front of an empty lot
on Early Street? This is the perfect place
for a community garden, we thought,
then but we dont even know who
owns it.it is in a redevelopment
zone.. You said, Hey, why not use it
for now? You got the owner to say Sure, and the neighbor to say,
Ill get you free water and Grow It Green Morristown was born!
That first clean up day in April, we were hoping a few folks would
show up and help. Over 30 came. The first night we started
building beds, 10 folks showed up to help, most we did not even
know. Of course there was the snow, the flooding, and other small
setbacks. It was not always fun, but it was always exciting. That
garden has flourished into a true community.
That same sunny March day we drove over to the lot behind the
Lafayette Learning Center. Sam suggested putting in an educational
garden for the whole school district. Carolle laughed until you
said, yes!
At our first meeting with the School District we asked for the whole
field, and they declined, said they needed it for the soccer games.
Sam and Carolle were ready to leave, and you said What about
this parcel by the tennis court Well, here we are, the largest
public school garden in the state, and growing! And all this is
because of your dream for a community garden for Morristown.
We thank you, Myra, for being a vital part of our incredible journey.
Your Co-founders, Samantha Rothman and Carolle Huber

Classroom Cultivator of the Year

Pilar Restrepo
Woodland School, Morris School District

For the past six years, Pilar has been

an integral part of bringing the
concept of healthy eating into the
classroom and to the Urban Farm.
Pilar also has helped Grow It Green
bridge the language barrier with her
bilingual kindergarten students,
getting them excited about their
visits to the Urban Farm. A teacher
for 13 years, together she and
Farmer Shaun have created
impactful lessons to teach students how food is grown and highlight
the importance of eating healthy.
Each year Pilar helps Grow It Green Morristown fulfill its mission
to bring healthy eating to the Morris School District by organizing
two annual field trips for her students and scheduling time for inclassroom growing activities.
We are honored to present Pilar Restrepo with the 2016 Classroom
Cultivator of the Year Award.
