Supporting Bible translation in Papua New Guinea

A high school teacher recently mentioned to me that she had run out of ideas for newsletters and had simply
collected all of the photos taken of her at recent events to show her partners what she had been up to lately. I
thought that she had a brilliant idea and decided to follow suit. Then I realized that while high school students
and teachers take lots of pictures, I dont, and my students dont. I dont have lots of great event pictures to
share with you, but these are some snapshots that give a glimpse into my daily life:

My housemate, Joyce, has invited me to attend the miniNew Testament Bible dedication at her village
location in June. Joyce, Seija, and their national cotranslators have worked hard to translate 33% of the UrimKalpm New Testament, and Im very much looking forward
to celebrating their printed scriptures with this group of
excited believers.

Praise God that my educational research

is resulting in better student learning.

Praise God for a refreshing two-week

school break.

Pray that the Urim-Kalpm Mini New

Testament will be printed easily and
quickly at the Ukarumpa print shop. The
editions need to be ready for a flight in
early June.

Nangwom village is located in the Sandaun Province, and it

will take a few days to travel there and back. Ill have to fly
from Ukarumpa, in the Eastern Highlands, to Wewak, a

town on the North Coast, drive five hours inland on some

pretty basic roads, and then hike seven (or so) miles to
Nangwom. A day or two later, Ill reverse the process to
return to Ukarumpa and my work here.
Im excited to be able to celebrate this translation project
and to see a new part of the country. Im also a little
nervous about the seven mile hike. I keep hearing the
theme song from Gilligans Island float through my head,
except my mind sings a seven mile hike, a seven mile
hike! Im sure, however, that Ill make it to Nangwom and
appreciate the opportunity.

Pray for wisdom in my job. The last school

term is usually interesting as many
students, parents, and teachers enter
transition mode.

Pray that I will continue to make progress

on finishing up my masters degree. Only
one more course and an article to go!

Pray that our staffing transitions for the

new year will go well. Im still sorting out
classroom coverage for the new year, and
Im already sad that Sharon, the
elementary vice principal for the last
several years, is moving into a secondary
campus position.
